TiO2 P25 was fluorinated by thermal shock method in order to study the influence of thermal shock fluorination on the surface properties and the photocatalytic activity for the degradation of cationic and anionic organic dyes at different pH values. The surface charge of catalysts was characterized by the pHPZC measurement. The photocatalytic activity of catalysts was evaluated via the degradation of methylene blue (cationic dye) and methyl orange (anionic dye). The results showed that the thermal shock fluorination and the rise of solution pH can increase the surface negative charge of TiO2, which enhanced the adsorption of methylene blue and then improved the photocatalytic degradation of this cationic dye under UV and visible light. On the other hand, after the fluorination, the adsorption of methyl orange on TiO2 was strongly reduced, which limited the photocatalytic oxidation of this anion dye.

N-TiO2-x nanocatalysts are developed by the pulsed laser ablation in liquid (PLAL) technique, a simple and surfactant-free preparation method. The PLAL approach allows synthesizing chemical-morphological fine-tuning water TiO2-based nanomaterials, starting from targets of different nature (powders and commercial high purity targets). The catalytic activity was investigated using methylene blue (cationic dye) and methyl orange (azo dye). A different photocatalytic response was found for the various kinds of N-TiO2-x. In the first 20 min, under UV and visible light, about 50% and 10% of the methyl orange were removed using the N-TiO2-x and TiO2 colloids, respectively. In addition, we observe that the response towards the methylene blue is comparable in all the synthesized samples under UV irradiation while differing by about 30% under a visible lamp. The enhanced photocatalytic response of the N-TiO2-x nanocatalysts with respect to the TiO2 one is dependent on the content of the nitrogen dopant, surface area, and nitrogen-oxygen bonding configurations.

<p>Hybrids (H) prepared from 8-Hydroxyquinoline (8-HQ, "oxine") and exchanged montmorillonites (Na(I)-, Zn(II)- and Fe(III)-Mont) have been synthesized using solid-solid reactions at room temperature. The characterization of these hybrids by PPXRD has shown that the interlayer spaces swell (from 0.22 to 1.10 Å of d001 differences) after the inclusion of 8-HQ due to its complexation with the cations present. In the IR spectra, new bands corresponding to 8-HQ groups, appear in the regions 1244 - 1608 cm-1 and 574 - 826 cm-1. DSC measurement has shown the hybrids to be more stable than the precursor montmorillonites, 8-HQ and the simple metal oxinates. Zeta potential measurement on suspensions of the hybrids showed them to be negatively charged over the whole pH range (pH=2-10). As an application of our elaborated hybrids, sorption of the cationic dye methylene blue MB (CMB=200 mg.L-1) by the Na(I)-, Zn(II)- and Fe(III)-hybrids has been found to be rapid for the first two. At the same time, for the Fe(III) species, one month of sedimentation was required to adsorb 87 % of MB. The structural characterization of multi-hybrids MH (H+MB) by PXRD has shown a shift of d001 to higher values (Na-MH: 15.32 Å; Zn-MH: 16.61 Å; Fe-MH: 16.99 Å), signifying the intercalation of MB into interlayer spaces.<strong></strong></p>

Abstract The aim of this study is to synthesize a superior adsorbent by combining positive properties of alginate and natural zeolite (clinoptilolite). Electrostatic interactions between the negatively charged carboxyl groups in alginate, porous sites in clinoptilolite and positively charged cationic dye in wastewater make alginate and clinoptilolite superior for dye removal. A model wastewater was prepared with varying concentrations of methylene blue (MB). Effects of MB concentration, adsorption time, pH, and adsorbent concentration on adsorption performance were evaluated. Composite adsorbents were also characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. While 97.0% of removal was achieved using 5 g/L adsorbent, 98.8% of removal was obtained using 15 g/L adsorbent dosage. When the dye concentrations were gradually decreased from 5 mg/L to 2 mg/L, dye removal of 96.9%, 97.7%, 97.9% and 98.4% were observed at the end of 180 minutes.
