This paper is a small-scale research study done by the author. It seeks to find the perceptions of students attending an alternative learning centre, with an emphasis on vocational education, with regards to their learning. This study is situated on the island of Malta and the five students interviewed currently attend this school, which opened in 2014, and is the only one of its kind on the island. The main results obtained are that, on the whole, the students are happy to attend this school. They drew comparisons between their school life in the previous four years of secondary education in the mainstream college and in the alternative learning centre. They enjoyed the lessons because they were learning the subjects that they wanted to learn, they enjoyed the small class size, and  the individual attention. They felt part of a big family and appreciated the fact that the teachers genuinely cared for them. They also mentioned things that should be improved, like more resources for the classrooms and a major renovation of the school building. The conclusion drawn here is that while the students are happy, care must be taken so that the concerns raised are addressed.

There is little debate about the concept of education in Kierkegaard, but we believe that this is a basic point in the thinking of the Danish philosopher, as we seek to demonstrate, and should be the object of further research, study and reflection. We take as reference for the beginning of this debate texts such as the Philosophical Fragments and the Post-Scriptum, where subjectivity and singularity appear as fundamental concepts. Keywords: Education. Rethinking the goals of vocational education, integrating into the international professional community, required rethinking of the academic disciplines role, which primarily affected the foreign language. Researchers note its importance for successful professional activity, for the development of special qualities. At the same time, the problem of educating professional responsibility, conditioned by the outlook of the individual, the conviction of the need to make professional decisions with an orientation towards their consequences for society and the country as a whole, has ceased to be a priority. The article focuses on the means of implementing the educational function of a foreign language in the unity of the content (context of the language) and methods of comparison with regional natural history, which activates creative thinking and affects the social position in the perception of the modern worldview, on the formation of a person's motivational-value attitude to his native culture. Comparative analysis of the native and foreign language culture allows a deeper understanding of the native culture and the formation of patriotic beliefs. The conclusions obtained in the course of understanding the educational function of a foreign language are based on the results of a comprehensive study conducted by graduate students of Samara University on the theory and methodology of vocational education, the purpose of which was to determine the effective personal characteristics of students in different areas of vocational training.

The article focuses on the issue of developing competency-based vocational training programs on the basis of workplace requirements. International experience suggests that vocational education teachers lack capabilities for interpretation and application of occupational standards in training. Some countries which opted for developing national educational standards failed to base them on the requirements of occupational standards. This has brought additional dislocations to taking adequate account of the workplace requirements in the development of vocational education programs. This write-up describes a pilot methodology for developing programs of vocational education on the basis of occupational standards. The methodology has incorporated some elements of the world practice and is currently being piloted in Kyrgyzstan in three industries at the qualification levels of certified worker and technician Diploma. The methodology is bound by the template of occupational standards, applied in the economically advanced nations, what has determined the working processes applied for their interpretation for the purpose of skills training and assessment. The paper explains the format and the categories inherent to the advanced occupational standards, which in some countries are also named “the competency standards”. The methodology takes advantage of the detailed template of occupational standards, which lends itself to organic transformation of units of standards into training modules and, further down, to the individual subject-based courses within the modular program. The methodology permits developing complex vocational education programs, which involve teaching of a few or many individual disciplines. А modular program functions as a mechanism for integration and synchronisation of these individual disciplines on the basis of the skills assessment requirements drawn from the occupational standards. The article describes some preliminary results of piloting of the new programs in lyceums and colleges of Kyrgyzstan.

This chapter is partly based upon the results of the ARCHGLASS project, which analysed samples dating from the middle of the first millennium BC to the ninth century AD. With the introduction of Greco-Roman translucent glass, colour separation and control over the properties of a re-molten batch become much easier. Once the benefits of glass recycling in terms of raw material procurement, energy expenditure, and waste management are clear, the collection and reuse of cullet becomes common in the Roman world. It is estimated here that upwards from a quarter of the glass circulating in the Roman to early Byzantine economy at any time constitutes recycled glass. It is hypothesized that, apart from the possible addition of cullet to tank furnaces, glass recycling would have been a small-scale process, at the level of the individual workshop.
