Flipped classroom is not a new concept in education. Students are expected to be well-prepared before coming to face-to-face sessions since they have to read/watch/listen to the lectures through the learning management system (LMS) or an e-learning portal before coming to the classes. What traditionally was practised is that students were given lectures during face-to-face sessions. Now, the lectures are online, and only activities to enhance students’ understanding will take place during face-to-face sessions. The concept is now being implemented successfully in some higher learning institutions in Malaysia, including Universiti Sains Malaysia, Penang; Universiti Malaysia Sabah, Sabah; and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Selangor. In fact, the emphasis is given by the Ministry of Higher Education, Malaysia for all higher learning institutions to incorporate the use of technology in teaching and learning. Given this, the National Defence University of Malaysia (NDUM) must also be prepared to rise to this challenge. This research becomes the main study on the use of flipped classroom at the NDUM

The study and investigation around educational models and teaching and learning methodologies is a theme that has long aroused the interest of the academic environment in higher education, both in the period before the advent of digital technology, as in current times in which technology is strongly embedded in the various teaching and learning processes, which involve classroom and distance-learning classes and courses, both in the context of e-learning and b-learning. Understanding how people learn and understand the themes presented in the classroom in face-to-face and e-learning is fundamental for planning and implementing processes that allow teachers to apply teaching and learning methodologies that can be efficient and effective. The main objective is to carry out a critical reflection on b-learning teaching, about the implementation of the teaching and learning methodology of the flipped classroom, one of the variants of b-learning teaching, supported by the results of a field investigation carried out with 152 students (n=152) of higher education.

The incorporation of information technology in education has benefitted learning institutions, instructors as well as students in coping with how knowledge can be transferred, absorbed, and used in the context of teaching and learning. The flipped classroom has been used to maximize the in-class time with discussions and critical thinking activities and leaves the learning to the students prior to the in-class sessions which were considered difficult to be implemented in a traditional classroom setting. The aim of this study is to explore students’ learning experiences with the implementation of flipped classroom approach. This study presents 96 business program students’ experiences of incorporating flipped classroom approach in a web designing course at the university level. Both quantitative and qualitative questionnaire was used to collect data for this study. The findings of the study showed that students responded positively to this approach. Students expressed that they are able to learn better and be more prepared to attend face-to-face classes. They appreciated that they were given the freedom to take charge of their individual learning. The hands-on nature of the course made flipped classroom favorable because students are able to apply their knowledge immediately by using the self-check questions after viewing the videos and progress to more complex applications during the in-class sessions. Students welcomed such an approach to be used in other hands-on or practical courses. However, there are still areas of concern and challenges for both students and instructors that need to be looked into when incorporating the flipped classroom model.

This article investigates the role of learning Jawi classical book as one of the important teaching and learning methods in Islamic sciences especially in the study of Islamic Jurisprudence in Malaysia. The method of using the classical Jawi texts has been in place in the Malay Archipelago since a long period of time. However, it is no longer becoming the primary teaching and learning methods nowadays. Thus, this study will look into the effects and significance of learning the classical Jawi texts in understanding the Islamic sciences, particularly the Islamic Jurisprudence. The analysis will also focus on the implementation of learning classical Jawi texts through the talaqqi (face to face) method in several academic faculties at the Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia. For this purpose, descriptive qualitative method is utilized as well as questionnaires and coupled with semi-structured interviews. The study concludes that the learning of classical Jawi texts through talaqqi method is extremely essential in Malaysia specifically to Shariah students. These texts are considered the main sources in the study of Islamic sciences in this region. The understanding of such primary sources in Islamic studies empowers students with well-grounded knowledge before they embark into the study of other modern discipline of knowledge. With such well-grounded knowledge students are able to withstand themselves from other influences which may affect their understanding of their religion. The tradition of studying of classical Jawi texts should be reintroduced to the Malay Muslim communities in Malaysia especially to the students at higher learning institutions in the country. Keywords: Islamic Turath; Islamic Education; Malay Civilizaton; Pondok System; Jawi Classical Book.

Accepted as an integral part of education, technology in teaching and learning can enhance practice not only in the traditional class but also beyond it. Schooling can now be extended to learning beyond the four enclosed walls of the classroom into the almost limitless possibility of education across time and space accessible via the domain of cyber technology. The significant contribution of technology to education has prompted educational bodies like the Malaysian Ministry of Education to prominently point out that online learning becomes the main pedagogical approach in higher learning institutions in the nation’s educational blueprint. The powerful potential of technology however, can only be realised through informed and purposeful use of it by teachers. Integrating technology in the language classroom requires that teachers not only have knowledge about the Technology but interplay between three components of knowledge – Technology, Pedagogy, and Content Knowledge (TPACK) which determines the essential qualities of teacher knowledge that are required when teachers employ technology in their teaching. The main study is therefore designed to measure teachers’ readiness to use technology in teaching English language in tertiary level classrooms to enhance student learning. To serve this purpose, a pilot study was carried out on 20 English language instructors to evaluate the reliability and the validity of a questionnaire that was adapted to gauge instructors’ readiness in carrying out technology-mediated classrooms at a public university in Malaysia. Correlations among items in the current study reveals lower coefficients compared to a previous study on the same instrument probably due to the smaller sample size in the current study but the correlationships are mostly positive which still suggests convergence validity. The internal consistency of the items was mostly better than two previous similar studies. Five items that seemed to be misbehaving in their respective measures were chosen based on their inter-item correlation and the item-total statistics and scrutinized via cognitive interviews with selected respondents to gain insights into the items but the results of the interviews revealed that the items are functioning as intended.

The implementation of Movement Control Order (MCO) to curb the spread of Covid-19 has various effects on the community, regardless of the field they are involved in. Enforcement order to stay at home has resulted  to the closure and restriction of all types of operations including the education sector. Due to the implementation of MCO, the teaching and learning activities that used to be conducted face-to-face have been completely replaced by online learning. This situation eventually has given some stressful impact and has caused difficulties to students of higher learning institutions to continue their studies virtually. Various factors have been found as stressors among undergraduate students. It is hoped that this study would help to find effective ways to reduce stress among undergraduate students.

Only 23% of Malaysian workforce has tertiary education compared to Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development countries such as Singapore and Finland that have tertiary education with an average of 28% and around 35%, respectively. This study investigates perceived needs lifelong learning programmes for professionalisation among the workers. A survey was conducted on workers from the industries. Most of the workers felt that lifelong learning programmes provide personal satisfaction. In terms of perceived needs, workers from higher positions in industries need lifelong learning programmes to get better positions and better salaries as compared to those with lower positions in industries to get better job and education. Both groups have different preferences for means of learning whether face-to-face or online learning. The implications are that the government has to change their policy in terms of requirement for these companies to register with the Human Resource Department Fund so that their workers be subsidised for attending lifelong learning programmes and to encourage the participation of public higher learning institutions for providing online and weekend lifelong learning programmes to the workers.
