Urban public transport is gaining significant importance in today’s world. This is evident from the fact that it has found its place in United Nations Development Programme’s Sustainable Development Goals in the eleventh goal pertaining to ‘Sustainable cities and communities’. The competitiveness of the cities largely depends on the robustness of their transport systems. In India there has been huge spending on the public transport projects in cities across the country. Ahmedabad, Surat and Rajkot from Gujarat, India have been the beneficiaries of these investments. Capturing the demand side quality of services is very important for such projects and hence the attempt has been made to study whether the commuters’ perceptions on quality of services of Bus Rapid Transit systems vary across different demographic cohorts. There are nine demographic cohorts used for the study. SERVPERF model has been adopted to study the performance of Bus Rapid Transit systems in the said citied. The performance is evaluated over the six factors namely; tangibles, empathy, cleanliness, reliability, safety and affordability. It has been found that Surat tops among the three cities followed by Rajkot and Ahmedabad on various service quality factors. Also commuters’ perception towards quality of service dimensions vary across demographic cohorts like gender, time of travel, education, employment status, length of patronization and purpose of trip.

This paper seeks to understand participation in out-of-home activities by inhabitants in Dar es Salaam, and their perceptions toward informal public transport (IPT) and bus rapid transit (BRT) in supporting these activities. Without fixed schedules, IPT (e.g., minibuses, motorcycles, and tricycles) is used as a means of transport for different trips. However, IPT is burdened by poor roads, traffic congestion, and high transport demand. Many developing cities are seeking to replace IPT with formal BRT lines. However, little is known in relation to the ability of IPT and BRT to support out-of-home activity participation of the inhabitants. This paper reports on a study in Dar es Salaam exploring the relative contribution of each type of service. The study took place before the opening of BRT, and encompasses focus group discussions, participatory geographical information systems, and questionnaires carried out in two study zones: one close to a BRT corridor and the other in a peri-urban location. The findings show that IPT was used to support participation in daily activities like work, education, shopping, and social matters; and was perceived to be flexible in providing access to both high and low density unplanned settlements. The BRT was viewed to benefit specific groups of people, especially individuals working in permanent offices in and around the city center, particularly professional workers. This paper sheds light on how the two systems were perceived by the local people and can inform policy makers about possible improvements in public transport systems to support activity participation of their inhabitants.

ABSTRACTThe Government of Semarang have sought to develop a mass transportation system using theconcept of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) in Mangkang‐Penggaron corridor. In order to effectivelyfacilitate the movement of city dwellers, the BRT system required the provision of functioningshelters along the corridor. There is a need to optimize the function of the shelters including theintegration to other modes of transportation and to the activities of the Central Business District(CBD), ensuring optimum performance of the whole BRT system. This study determined andevaluated the quality of BRT shelter services in Semarang based on user perception. The studyemployed analysis regarding the fulfillment of criteria for quality of services including waitingtime, convenience, service reliability, distance, and BRT shelter clerk services. The analysisprocesses concluded that the current BRT shelter services were in fact less than ideal. The studyfound lack of maintenance and the need for improvement of services at rush hour.Keywords: evaluation, quality of services, and bus shelter

AbstractThe issue of sustainable city logistics has steadily been developed over the last decades. Urban public transport companies can make a significant contribution to the concept of sustainable city logistics. The customers’ perception and satisfaction regarding urban public transport companies can be associated with the increased use of their services. The preference for urban public transport reduces the use of individual car transport, which is linked to the environmental pillar of sustainability. For the customers, the level of the provided service is very important. The article is focused on the evaluation of the outcomes from the primary research concerning the service quality performed by the urban public transport companies in the Hradec-Pardubice residential agglomeration. The goal lies in identifying gaps in service quality. The method used in this article is representative primary research. The primary research was carried out in the form of structured personal interviews with a representative sample of respondents. Selected statistical methods were used to evaluate the data. The results are discussed in the context of published research studies. Research in this article found that respondents are more satisfied with the quality of services performed by the urban public transport companies, but the perception of individual service quality factors varies from one user group to another. The research also confirms a different perceptions regarding customer care and comfort by different age groups of respondents. The article implies that public transport companies should pay attention to setting fare prices for different groups of passengers.

In the past decade, bus rapid transit (BRT) corridors have been added in China at a faster rate than anywhere else in the world. As the number of BRT systems in Chinese cities continues to increase, it is critical to identify the key factors that influence the operation performance and service quality of these systems. In this paper, the design of BRT systems in China is compared with that of non-Chinese cities with a ranking system based on the set of indicators from the BRT Standard (2013 and 2014 editions), which were developed by the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy. The database included experts’ assessments of more than 99 BRT corridors in 59 cities and 21 countries and was available online. To identify strengths and opportunities to improve the Chinese BRT systems, the analysis of variance method was used to test whether the BRT score differences between the Chinese BRT and non-Chinese BRT systems were statistically significant. Results showed that, on average, BRT systems in Chinese cities scored significantly lower than those in other countries. This finding can be explained by the low scores of Chinese systems in design indicator categories such as integration and access, a category that evaluates the level of integration with other modes of transportation, pedestrian access and universal accessibility, and infrastructure, which measures bus station design features.

Quality of service is used as a means to achieve competitive advantage. Inimproving the quality of services will lead to a likely customer loyalty and attractnew customers. The city of Palembang introduced the concept of Bus Rapid Transit(BRT). A form of mass transportation by combining the passenger-oriented station.Underlying issue in this research is "how influence service quality to passengersatisfaction BRT services Transmusi Palembang?" Aims to identify and analyze theeffect of service quality on customer satisfaction. The approach used in this study isa survey and descriptive research type on 100 respondents. To test this study usingmultiple regression and t test and F test The results showed that the quality ofservice seen from the 5 dimensions: Tangibles, Reliability, Responsiveness,Assurance and Empathy simultaneously and Persia significant effect on customersatisfaction Transmusi BRT services. Responsiveness is the dimension of servicequality is the most dominant in influencing customer satisfaction.

This research investigates the passengers' level of satisfaction from the use of diverse public transport systems. The aim is to uncover factors that drive their modal choices and to assess the quality implications of the variability of the users' perceived satisfaction through the use of two statistical methods (ordered logit and linear mixed models) and comprehensive diagrammatic techniques. Five transit systems in the two major cities in Greece, Athens and Thessaloniki, have been examined. The analysis demonstrated that the most important satisfaction attributes are service frequency, followed by waiting conditions and network coverage, punctuality and in-vehicle transport conditions. A gender-based market segmentation analysis provided further insight into the differences among groups of the population. According to this analysis, female respondents tend to place their attention on punctuality, waiting conditions and driver behavior, while male respondents on in-vehicle transport conditions and the existence and quality of transfer information.

Land transportation needs are increasing. One of the problems is the uncontrolled number of private vehicles. Buses as public transportation become the right choice to overcome the problem. Bus rapid transit is a fast, convenient, secure and punctual. The research purpose is to know the performance of Trans Bandung Raya Bus (TBRB) based on the policy of Director General of Land Transportation Decision No.SK.687/AJ.206/DRJD/2002 and to analyze the service quality factors of TBRB. The method of service quality assessment is Importance Performance Analysis. The research showed that the total value of TBRB's performance is 23 and based on the performance standards of the Director General of Land Transportation Decision is the "Good" category. The value of TBRB service quality (2.63) is smaller than the expected value (3.31) which means that TBRB have to keep improving their performance. The service quality variables that need to be improved are Empathy and Assurance.
