The study proposed three hyphothesis and results indicates that capacity building has no significant influence toward SMEs engagement. Meanwhile, service quality has a significant influence on SMEs engagement. Based on multiple regression calibration shows capacity building and service quality has a significant influence on SMEs engagement. Competition among small businesses are high, as small businesses compete for market share which larger business do not engage with. A definite competitive advantage that small and medium enterprises (SMEs) can rely on is service quality (Kasul & Motwani in Anuar & Yusuff 2011:328; Tseng & Wu 2014:77). SMEs do not necessarily understand service standards and how to ensure that the service standard is implemented. The research utilised a quantitative research design whereby the data was collected by means of a 5-point Likert scale survey known as the SERVQUAL model. The results indicate that there are discrepancies between dimensions those owners feel should be adhered to and the extent to which they perceive their businesses to adhere to these dimensions.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to investigate the role played by service quality (SQ) in manufacturer–distributor working partnerships in the context of Indian small and medium enterprises (SMEs), and present two models which propose and validate that contributions toward SQ, made by both the manufacturing unit and distribution firm lead to satisfaction which consequently results in business-to-business (B2B) loyalty.Design/methodology/approachThe research design for this study includes a combination of literature review, exploratory interviews with a focus group and a questionnaire survey conducted through interview schedule from 101 information rich and willing respondents working in SMEs of northern India.FindingsThe paper brings out scales foe measuring organizational (internal) and distributor (external) SQ. Further, two models using structural equation modeling are developed. Model-I examines the effect of organizational SQ on distributor SQ. Model-II examines the impact of distributor SQ on satisfaction and loyalty and also tests a set of four propositions related to their working relationship. The models are empirically tested and are found to be fit.Research limitations/implicationsFuture researchers may validate these scales, and empirically test the proposed models in alternate settings. Insights derived from this study may be transferred to other partnerships, which may exist in a manufacturing supply chain including suppliers, employees, retailers and end consumers.Practical implicationsThis study would be of interest to SME practitioners interested in improving SQ with their distributors. The study also finds support for strengthening collaborative relationships with B2B partners to achieve a win-win situation.Originality/valueThere are very few empirical studies that measure SQ w.r.t. distribution function in SMEs and the concept is in nascent stage, especially in Indian setting.

The increasing globalization and liberalization of trade have posed onto manufacturing small and medium enterprise (SMEs) in developing economies of Africa a survival and growth challenges. Nevertheless, the resource-based-view (RBV) has given rise to a perspective that views a firm’s intangible assets as strategic resources with the potential to create and enhance sustainable competitive advantage in both local and global markets. Based on the peculiarity of SMEs in Africa, this paper develops and validate a conceptual model on the role of strategic organizational capabilities in improving the competitive advantage of SMEs for sustainable development in developing economies of Africa. Precisely, six variables were identified and reviewed as strategic capabilities. A total number of 81 valid questionnaires were retrieved from owners/managers of SMEs in Yobe state Nigeria and used to evaluate the reliability and validity of the adopted measures. The result of Cronbach’s Alpha test reveals a satisfactory value for all the variables under study. Specifically, innovation, learning, management, marketing, relational and technological capabilities have been established to be reliable strategic capabilities that would effectively and efficiently create and improve the sustainable competitive advantage of SMEs in developing economies.

This research aims to determine whether the service quality of officers taxes, tax sanctions and tax compliance costs have a significant influence towards good compliance of MSME Taxpayers (micro, small and medium enterprises) partial or simultaneous. Data obtained from questionnaires filled out by respondents who registered with the Office of Cooperatives and MSMEs Padang. A total of 95 the questionnaire returned with a complete and processed condition. By using multiple regression techniques, the results of the study show that service quality and tax sanctions have a positive effect on MSME Taxpayer compliance. More and more both the service quality of tax officers and the increasingly heavy taxation sanctions imposed on SME Taxpayers, it will increase taxpayer compliance MSMEs. In addition, tax compliance costs have a negative effect on compliance MSME Taxpayers. The greater the tax compliance fee, the taxpayer compliance MSMEs will decline.

Data was collected using structured questionnaires. The sample population for this study was 94 Small and Medium Enterprises operating in Gatanga Sub County. Primary data was collected through a questionnaire. Descriptive and inferential analysis was conducted to analyze the data. The data was presented using tables, graphs and charts. The study used multiple regression analysis model to establish the relationship between the variables. Results: The regression results showed that there is a positive and significant relationship between access to credit facilities and performance of SMEs as supported by a p value of 0.000 and a beta coefficient of 1.088. Results further showed that there is a positive and significant relationship between credit lending policy and performance of SMEs as supported by a p value of 0.001 and a beta coefficient of .072. In addition, results showed that there is a negative and significant relationship between interest rates and performance of SMEs as supported by a p value of 0.000 and a beta coefficient of -0.351. Lastly, results showed that there is a negative and significant relationship between collateral security and performance of SMEs as supported by a p value of 0.000 and a beta coefficient of -0.588.Unique contribution to theory, practice and policy: The findings of this study will be useful source of reference to researchers and scholars in their research work.
