Channels research has consistently argued that asymmetric channel relationships are more dysfunctional than those characterized by symmetric interdependence. The authors propose that the degree of both interdependence asymmetry and total interdependence affect the level of interfirm conflict, trust, and commitment. Using survey data from automobile dealers, they demonstrate that, with increasing interdependence asymmetry, the dealer's trust in and commitment to the supplier decline while interfirm conflict increases. In addition, they demonstrate that relationships with greater total interdependence exhibit higher trust, stronger commitment, and lower conflict than relationships with lower interdependence. The effects on conflict are consistent with those predicted by bilateral deterrence theory, and the effects on trust and commitment are in accord with the authors’ bilateral convergence predictions.

Manifest channel conflict is operationalized in terms of the frequency and intensity of disagreements between channel members and the importance of the issues about which they disagree. Six different multiple-item unidimensional measures including from one to all three of these components are evaluated with respect to reliability and validity with a sample of automobile dealers. The measure combining frequency, intensity, and importance multiplicatively is judged superior to the others.

Three articles and a commentary in the September 1976 issue of Pediatrics dealt with car safety for infants and children.1-4 Not one mentioned the cooperation of automobile dealers in promulgating the sale and use of proper devices. Local pediatricians and pediatric societies might well enlist the cooperation of automobile dealers in this effort, and obtain statistics over several years on the value of such a cooperative campaign.

In April of 1996, the Michigan Automobile Association made a $2500 campaign contribution to the Republicans in the Michigan House of Representatives. Three days later, the Republican-controlled House Tax Policy Committee approved a bill that would have reduced the state sales tax on a new car, based on the value of the trade-in, a bill supported by the automobile dealers. A few days after that, however, the Governor, also a Republican, threatened to veto that legislation. An executive of the auto dealers association called up the House Republication staff and asked for the $2500 contribution back. When informed that the check had been deposited, he told his bank to stop payment (Luke, 1996).
