Women scientists are often seen as anomalous exceptions in the fictional (and indeed real) world of white, male dominated scientific research. Even in the supposedly race and gender blind future of Star Trek, a black woman science specialist is considered revolutionary. Science and technology are a backdrop for the Star Trek universe. The theory and practice that gives the narrative a spectacular speculative frame is often perceived as neutral (or at least benevolent) as Starfleet explores the universe. Star Trek idealises science and the scientist, and throughout much of its history the science future it imagines has been distinctly white and male. This chapter argues that Star Trek has historically given women the space to be scientists, but Discovery goes further than previous entries into the canon by taking a black woman scientist from the margin to the centre of the story and offering a future when neither race nor gender present a barrier.

O objetivo desta pesquisa foi examinar a participação do Grupo de Valorização Negra do Cariri no combate à violência doméstica contra a mulher negra em Crato, interior do Ceará. Verificou-se que essa associação civil é um modelo de enfrentamento à violência de raça e de gênero, perante a negligência histórico-estatal. PALAVRAS-CHAVE: Grupo de Valorização Negra do Cariri. Mulher negra. Violência doméstica e familiar.   ABSTRACT The aim of this research was to examine the participation of Cariri Black Valorization Group in the combat against domestic violence against black women in Crato, interior city of Ceará. Focused on the author’s work as a womanist playwright, director, and acting professor, this chapter reveals the personal, political, and performative implications of her most recent play, What the Heart Remembers: the Women and Children of Darfur, a choreo-poem for voice, dance, and percussion. In this chapter, she writes about the conceptual process of the “choreo-poem” and her journey toward its production. As an artistic-activist educator, she utilizes the play’s thematic focus as her personal response to the gender politics of genocide and ongoing civil war between North and South Sudan, in Africa. She not only reflects upon her position as a black/woman of color, she also addresses the politics of race and gender border-crossing involved in the play’s production related to her collaboration with her colleague (a white female dance professor and choreographer for the play). In 2012, she and her colleague premiered What the Heart Remembers in Scotland at the Edinburgh International Theatre Festival.

Recent instructional trends in the field of TESOL emphasize teaching language through course content. The dual focus of content-based English instruction (CBI) provides a way for language teachers to engage learners with challenging material while increasing their linguistic proficiency. This article describes a unit in a CBI course at a Japanese university that was designed to promote the development of critical consciousness (Freire, 2005) through the analysis of a film. Students identified race- and gender-related issues, engaged in discussions about these issues, and finally wrote a critical response paper to the film.

Este artículo traza una breve genealogía de escritoras británicas negras y asiáticas que utilizaron su voz para inscribir sus experiencias y reivindicar la necesidad de examinar las intersecciones entre las categorías de raza y género.</p><p><strong>Abstract</strong></p><p>The last years of the 80’s witnessed the consolidation of Black British and Asian British feminisms that have had their origins in the struggles and activism of Black and Asian women immigrants and the emergence of creative writing groups. Background: In order to better understand the posttraining suicide prevention behavior of gatekeeper trainees, the present article examines the referral and service receipt patterns among gatekeeper-identified youths. Methods: Data for this study were drawn from 26 Garrett Lee Smith grantees funded between October 2005 and October 2009 who submitted data about the number, characteristics, and service access of identified youths. Results: The demographic characteristics of identified youths are not related to referral type or receipt. Furthermore, referral setting does not seem to be predictive of the type of referral. Demographic as well as other (nonrisk) characteristics of the youths are not key variables in determining identification or service receipt. Limitations: These data are not necessarily representative of all youths identified by gatekeepers represented in the dataset. The prevalence of risk among all members of the communities from which these data are drawn is unknown. Furthermore, these data likely disproportionately represent gatekeepers associated with systems that effectively track gatekeepers and youths. Conclusions: Gatekeepers appear to be identifying youth across settings, and those youths are being referred for services without regard for race and gender or the settings in which they are identified. Furthermore, youths that may be at highest risk may be more likely to receive those services.
