Using Social Cognitive Theory to Predict Safer Sex Behaviors in College Students

Young adults engage themselves in unsafe sexual behaviors exposing themselves to getting aSTD and/or HIV/AIDS. The purpose of this study was to use social cognitive theory in predicting safer sex behaviors among college students. A cross-sectional study design was implemented among a sample of 180 sexually active college students. More than half of the survey responders were monogamous and less than a quarter had two sexual partners. A step-wise multiple regressions model indicated a statistically significant predictive model with self-efficacy, situational perceptions and self-control towards safer sex as significant predictors (48% predicted variance) of self-reported sexual behaviors.

The purpose of this study was to use social cognitive theory to predict the frequency and intention for not smoking among middle school students. The study utilized a cross-sectional design (n=163) and administered a 38-item valid and reliable questionnaire. Frequency for smoking was predicted by environment not supportive to smoking (p < 0.0001) and emotional coping (p < 0.001) (Adjusted R2= 0.20). Intent to smoke was predicted by emotional coping (p < 0.0001); environment not supportive to smoking (p < 0.001), expectations for not smoking (p < 0.003), and self-control for not smoking (p <0.017) (Adjusted R2= 0.36).

Acceptance of COVID-19 vaccines needs a health promotion approach to address various social, environmental and personal factors leading to vaccine hesitancy. We assessed the vaccine hesitancy rate and applied social cognitive theory (SCT) to understand COVID-19 vaccine rejection in Qassim, Saudi Arabia. A cross-sectional study was conducted among visitors of 10 randomly selected primary health care centers in Buraidah, Saudi Arabia. Data was collected by a self-administrated questionnaire. The variables were grouped into six constructs of SCT. Logistic regression was used to assess the predictors of vaccine rejection. Out of 486 participants included in the study, 30.5% rejected the vaccine. The most common reason for vaccine rejection was uncertainty about the vaccine’s effectiveness (78%). Among various constructs of SCT, reciprocal determinism (nationality, income and suffering from COVID-19 infection), behavioral capability (knowledge about vaccine safety), self-efficacy (registered for vaccine), and observational learning (getting the vaccine after friends and family members) were significant predictors. Expectation and reinforcement constructs did not show significant association. There was high vaccine rejection in Qassim, KSA. This calls for further improving the mass education strategies. Social cognitive theory can be used to predict vaccine rejection and to develop strategies to increase the utilization of COVID-19 vaccines in Saudi Arabia.

English competency has become essential for obtaining a better job or succeeding in higher education in Taiwan. Thus, passing the General English Proficiency Test is important for college students in Taiwan. The current study applied Ajzen's theory of planned behavior and the notions of outcome expectancy and self-efficacy from Bandura's social cognitive theory to investigate college students' intentions to take the General English Proficiency Test. The formal sample consisted of 425 undergraduates (217 women, 208 men; M age = 19.5 yr., SD = 1.3). The theory of planned behavior showed greater predictive ability ( R2 = 33%) of intention than the social cognitive theory ( R2 = 7%) in regression analysis and made a unique contribution to prediction of actual test-taking behavior one year later in logistic regression. Within-model analyses indicated that subjective norm in theory of planned behavior and outcome expectancy in social cognitive theory are crucial factors in predicting intention. Implications for enhancing undergraduates' intentions to take the English proficiency test are discussed.

Konsumsi makanan cepat saji pada remaja dianggap sebagai hal sepele yang biasa dilakukan. Namun, dampak yang akan dirasakan berupa gangguan kesehatan dalam jangka waktu pendek maupun jangka panjang, seperti obesitas. Salah satu sekolah di Surabaya yang memiliki angka kejadian obesitas cukup tinggi yakni SMAN 2 Surabaya. Tujuan penelitian ini untuk menganalisis faktor perilaku yang berhubungan dengan konsumsi makanan cepat saji pada remaja menggunakan studi aplikasi Social Cognitive Theory. Penelitian ini merupakan penlitian observasional analitik dengan desain penelitian cross sectional. Populasi penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas X dan XI SMAN 2 Surabaya dengan penarikan sampel menggunakan stratified random sampling sebanyak 102 orang. Pengumpulan data menggunakan kuisioner yang dibagikan secara online. Variabel independen penelitian ini adalah karakteristik individu, self efficacy, pengetahuan, self regulation, dukungan keluarga, dukungan teman sebaya, dan paparan informasi. Sedangkan variabel dependen yaitu tindakan konsumsi makanan cepat saji pada remaja. Pengolahan dan analisis data menggunakan uji Kruskal Wallis. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat hubungan antara uang saku (p = 0,015), self regulation (p = 0,047), dan dukungan orangtua (p = 0,038) (p<0,05). Namun, pada variabel lainnya tidak terdapat hubungan dengan tindakan mengonsumsi makanan cepat saji. Penelitian ini diharapkan dapat memberikan kontribusi kepada pihak sekolah maupun Puskesmas setempat dalam melakukan pencegahan obesitas pada remaja.

BACKGROUND In China, rapid development in all walks of society has been accompanied by dramatic transition of traditional culture and by negative effects on sexual health of young people. OBJECTIVE We investigated knowledge, attitudes, values and behaviors of college students in relation to sex and sex education in Tianjin, China, with an aim of informing sex education policy under the context of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. METHODS We selected seven main universities in Tianjin. Methods were: questionnaire survey of 2105 college students; sex education topic campus lectures about sexually transmitted infections/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (STIs/AIDS) and sex health of students. Qualitative and quantitative data were assessed separately with thematic and statistical analysis respectively and then combined. RESULTS We have found five main findings about Tianjin college student’s sexual wonders, knowledge, values, attitudes and behaviors: Tianjin college students have some knowledge of basic sex physiology, while the largely arranged sex education curriculum fails to reach the needs for adults; background factors (ie, gender, native places and urban/rural) are crucial in the sex education and the outcome of sex education, which might provide theoretical basis for policymakers and researchers; sexual education lags behind sexual behaviors (ie, sex drive, masturbation and sex); medical universities should realize the importance of sex education and the implement of sex education; homosexuality and sperm bank are new territories for sex education. CONCLUSIONS Results of this exploratory study suggest five ways that could be developed to improve sex education: qualified specialists or teachers are the best educators to address learning needs of college students; background factors are of great significance in sex education and sex education learning, group differences and individual differences should be considered in sex education; for urban students, sex education from parents/teachers might be better than peer-led sex education; homosexuality and sperm bank are new territories in sex education, sex education must keep abreast with times.
