This study is aimed at assessment of gross alpha, gross beta radioactivity and heavy metals concentration in soil samples. It involves ten (10) different locations in Wukari, Taraba state. The analyses included gross alpha and beta radioactivity using MPC-2000-DP and the measurement of heavy metals concentration using Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS). The results obtained showed that the gross alpha activities ranged from (0.0027±0.0003- 0.0177±0.0001) Bq/g while the gross beta ranged from (0.0125±0.0020-0.2379±0.0012) Bq/g .The present study indicates that the nature of soil in the study area has a very low level radiation. Measured values of gross alpha contamination in soil samples collected from different locations in the study area were found below the permissible range of WHO. The total heavy metals Cu, Pb, Zn, Co,Fe were evaluated in the soil samples. Based on the findings concentrations of these soils were analyzed showed significantly higher concentrations which follow the order Pb˃Fe˃Cu˃Co˃Zn, comparing with WHO standards guidelines, the results revealed that food samples planted on this soil could be disastrous to human health

No. 51. 2004. Kata kunci: Gastropoda, Mangrove, Logam Berat, TNRAW. ABSTRACTThis study aims todetermine the population structure and heavy metals contents of gastropods (Telescopiumtelescopium) living in RawaAopaWatumohai National RAWN Park. This research was conducted from January until March 2018. The sampling location of research was in mangroves grown along the Lanowulu and Roraya rives at RAWN Park. This research uses purposive sampling method.  This study used the plot quadrate of 1 m2 widethat placed in each station. The number of individuals of.T. telecopium was counted, while their fresh weight and length of T.telescopiumwere measured. In addition, the content of heavy metals of Lead (Pb) and Cadmium (Cd) into meat of T. telescopium were measured by using Atomic Absorption spectroscopy (AAS) in Laboratory at Faculty of Fisheries andMarine Science at Halu Oleo University. The population structure of T. telescopium was determined by histrogram analysis, its size distribution was determined by coefficient of variation (CV) analysis. The results showed that population structure of gastropods was normal curve with small ranges of size distribution. The content of Pb and Cd into sediment and sea water of Rorayariver were significantly higher as compared than that in Lanowulu river. On the other hand, the content of heavy metals Pb and Cd into meat of T. telescopium was not significantly different. However, the heavy metals contents of Pb and Cd into sea water, sediment and meat of T. telescopiumboth in Lanowuluand Roraya riverswere above the quality standard according to Ministry of Environment No. 51/LH/2004. Keywords : Gastropods, mangroves, Lanowulu and Roraya rivers, heavy metals, Rawa Aopa Watumohai National Park

The increasing content of heavy metals in soil and atmospheric air can lead to serious consequences in the final link of which a person is. To determine heavy metals in atmospheric deposition, the method of biomonitoring of mosses was used. Joint Institute for Nuclear Research scientists started the implementation of the mosses biomonitoring methodology in Azerbaijan 2015. In total, the concentration was determined for 44 elements. Determinations were performed using instrumental analysis of Epithermal Neutron Activation and Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy in 85 moss samples. The species of moss used in the work was Pleurosium schreberi. Based on the analysis results, the most contaminated areas are identified.

Lead (Pb) behavior was studied in soil treated twice with sewage sludge contaminated with lead at interval of 18 months. Soil samples received five different treatments: three with lead [0 (reference); 2,500; 5,000 mug g-1] and two with a mixture of lead and cadmium (interferer) (2,500 + 2,500 and 5,000 + 5,000 mug g-1, respectively). Vases containing treated soil were cultivated with maize in a greenhouse for 75 days. Pb was extracted using nitric perchloric digestion and analyzed by atomic absorption spectroscopy. The soil, containing sewage sludge contaminated by lead presented a higher concentration of Pb. The metal concentration remained constant in all treatments at 20-60 cm depth. No absorption of Pb by the plants was detected.

Amethod for the determination of traces of arsenic in food has been developed based on electrolytic arsine generation and atomic absorption spectroscopy detection. The essence of the method is the addition of copper and tin salts to the electrolyte solution, enabling a fast and effective arsine evolution. The advantage of this method lies in the fact that it enables the simultaneous concentration of heavymetals, such as cadmium and lead, on cathode. The applicability of themethod was illustrated by determining the arsenic content in some food samples based on vegetable oils and by comparing the results with those obtained by the classical technique of chemical hydriding with sodium tetrahydroborate.

Wastes from dumpsites constitute a major challenge for plants, human and environmental health. This study investigated the levels of heavy metals in stems and leaves of three (3) Vegetables and soil samples obtained from Ijagun dumpsite, located in Ijebu Ode, Ogun state. The samples were digested with mixed acids and aliquots of the extracts were analyzed for Zinc (Zn), lead (Pb), Cobalt (Co) and Copper (Cu) using the Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (Perkin Elmer A Analyst 700 model). The results obtained showed that there was an increase in the level of selected heavy metals observed in the topsoil compared with the underground soil collected from the dumpsite. The level of the metals present in the topsoil was in the order Zn > Pb >Cu > Co. The stem of Celosia argentea and Cochorus olitorius accumulate more heavy metals compared with the leaf. The level of these selected heavy metals were observed to be far above the WHO/FAO and NAFDAC permissible values in plant except Co in the stem and leaf of Celosia argentea and Talinum triangulae, indicating that the leaf and stem of vegetables from Ijagun dumpsite pose serious health threat to human. However, C. olitorius and C. argentea with high absorption ability for Zn, Pb and Cu could serve as a phytoremediator for soils contaminated with these metals.
