Selfies and the World Behind Our Back

(an excerpt from the upcoming book Postdigital Arcadia) Selfie photography serves not only a traditional role of photographic (self)recording, but also for manoeuvring the space behind one’s own back. Unfortunately, as two realities, the unmediated and mediated, human and machine vision, are not matching, there are many accidents of selfie-makers due to the crabwalk. By this, the photographic technology based on the rear-view mirror – in which objects (may) appear closer than they are – finally resolves one of the largest tragedies of human self-perception; the inability to see and control the world behind one’s back. Keywords: background, mobile photography, optical devices, photography, selfie

The outbreak of Covid-19 disease since late 2019 has led to fundamental changes in the process of globalization and liberalization of the world economy. In order to prevent the spread of this disease and control its negative consequences, many countries have implemented policies such as urban quarantine, cutting off passenger communication with neighboring countries and the world, closing tourist and tourist places, and implementing policies to protect domestic industries. In general, it led to the phenomenon of reverse globalization. According to the development of new economic convergence, which is based on the role of the market in economic relations between countries can play an important role in improving the productive capacity of countries in a region and create economic integration in different parts of the world. Such a state of integration in different parts of the world could be the solution to the process of globalization and in the post-Corona era, the concept of “one for all, all for one” was created at the regional and global level. As policy implications, the paper recommended some points to make a greater integration between Iran and Russia in the region

Abstract Tilletia controversa Kühn (TCK) is the causal agent of dwarf bunt of wheat, a destructive disease in wheat-growing regions of the world. The role of Meja, SA and Meja + SA were characterized for their control of TCK into roots, coleoptiles and anthers. The response of the defence genes PR-10a, Catalase, COI1-1, COII-2 and HRin1 was upregulated by Meja, SA and Meja + SA treatments, but Meja induced high level of expression compared to SA and Meja + SA at 1, 2, and 3 weeks in roots and coleoptiles, respectively. The severity of TCK effects in roots was greater at 1 week, but it decreased at 2 weeks in all treatments. We also investigated TCK hyphae proliferation into coleoptiles at 3 weeks and into anthers to determine whether hyphae move from the roots to the upper parts of the plants. The results showed that no hyphae were present in the coleoptiles and anthers of Meja-, SA- and Meja + SA-treated plants, while the hyphae were located on epidermal and sub-epidermal cells of anthers. In addition, the severity of hyphae increased with the passage of time as anthers matured. Bunted seeds were observed in the non-treated inoculated plants, while no disease symptoms were observed in the resistance of inducer treatments and control plants. Plant height was reduced after TCK infection compared to that of the treated inoculated and non-inoculated treatments. Together, these results suggested that Meja and SA display a distinct role in activation of defence genes in the roots and coleoptiles and that they eliminate the fungal pathogen movement to upper parts of the plants with the passage of time as the anthers mature.

This paper points out the importance of machines as tangible and substantial media for our customers to interact with the outer world. As the world is getting more and more globalized, diversified and complex, and situations are changing more frequently and extensively, it becomes harder and harder for designers to foresee operating conditions. Therefore design is changing quickly from traditional designer-centric to user-centric. It is a user who can understand the current situation and solve the imminent problem. Thus, the role of a machine is changing from a tool to a partner which helps a user understand the situation and solve the problem together. Although traditional role of machines has been primarily an actuator, its role as a sensing media is quickly increasing. Traditional product development has been one way and it is producer-driven, regarding customers as being very passive and just as consumers or users. But customers are very active and creative. The tangible and substantial feature of mechanical products has advantages in satisfying our customers’ needs for creativity and customization of our products to adapt to their needs and tastes and furthermore in creating experience and stories for them, which will add increased value, if not only product value but also process value is considered. To realize such goals, mechanical engineering should introduce more pragmatic approaches in addition to the current rational approach.

The pentatomid bug Bagrada hilaris is a key pest of brassicaceous crops in several areas of the world. Previous studies suggest that mate location of this species is mediated by volatile chemicals produced by males, among which the main compound is (E)-2-octenyl acetate. However, the possible attraction of males, females, and nymphs to this compound has not yet been specifically tested. In this study, we tested the response of B. hilaris females, males, and nymphs to (E)-2-octenyl acetate using an electroantennogram (EAG) and olfactometer in the presence or absence of a host plant. Moreover, (E)-2-octenyl acetate as an attractant lure in field trap bioassays was evaluated. EAG recordings showed that this compound evokes antennal responses in B. hilaris females. Olfactometer behavioral responses showed that females and nymphs were attracted to (E)-2-octenyl acetate, while males showed no attraction. In the field trap bioassays, captures were obtained in traps baited with 5 and 10 mg of (E)-2-octenyl acetate, while in traps loaded with 2 mg and control traps, there were no recorded catches. These results suggest the involvement of (E)-2-octenyl acetate in intraspecific interactions of this species.

The world continues to witness an explosion of growth in the number of 200-plus-meter skyscrapers, with three straight years of record-breaking completions (from 2014 to 2016) and a 441 percent increase on the total number of such towers in the 21st century, from 265 in 2000 to 1,168 at the end of 2016. Fueled largely by strong economic performance, much of this activity is centered in Asia and the Middle East, upending longstanding geopolitical trends. China in particular has dominated worldwide skyscraper construction, accounting for two-thirds of all completions in the last calendar year (2016). Further, the traditional role of the skyscraper has diversified, with residential and mixed-use buildings accounting for a greater share of 200-plus-meter buildings. This paper explores these interconnected trends in detail and analyzes both the causes and impacts of an evolving skyscraper industry.

The statistical challenges of globalization are profound. We cannot rely solely on national statistics to understand how economies work and how to create industrial policies focusing on competitiveness. It is necessary to see the whole. National statistics build pictures based on relationships between producers and consumers and the rest of the world. But these relationships, especially those with the rest of the world, have become increasingly more complex. There is an increasing need to consider global production within a global accounting framework. This implies a departure from the traditional role of international organizations as compilers of internationally comparable national statistics to bring together the national tables to create a global table.

The largest companies that are part of the energy sector are defined by Forbes as those associated with the production of energy from nonrenewable sources and they play a very significant role in the world economy and in the generation of the command and control (C & C) function of cities. No comprehensive studies are available at the present time illustrating changes in financial performance in relation to the share of the largest firms in the energy sector in terms of their role in the generation of the C & C function. Thus, the aim of the paper is to show changes in financial performance and the impacts of energy sector companies on the C & C function of cities as well as to show spatial variances in the sector’s geography. The energy sector is developing most rapidly in Chinese cities, although it does not play a major role in the most important cities in the world via its impact on the C & C function—this may be due to rapid growth in other sectors of the economy. It is, however, very important in smaller cities. On the other hand, a large share of the energy sector involved in the development of renewable sources of energy may disturb the position of cities whose C & C function relies on energy sector companies. Thus, forecasts are needed for the sector and its impact on the command and control function of cities for the period of transition from nonrenewable sources to renewable ones. One new area of research is the formulation of methods that would allow the determination of the effects of economic recessions in the future on the financial health and C & C function impacts of the energy sector.

Abstract Human geography, which developed only recently an interest for territory, links it, according to the circunstances, to the idea of power and control, the nature of social link, or the role of symbolic representations. The interest of social sciences for the problems of identity grew at the same time than that of geographers for territory: identity is linked to the construction of self or the relations with others, and remains an elusive notion. Territory serves as a basis for identity feelings according to variable modes. The transition to postmodernity challenges the forces behind traditional identities, which induces a frienzed quest of identification to things or landscapes. It provokes the end of the philosophies of history, upon which were built the identities and territories of yesterday. The ensuing proliferation of identitary discourses expresses the deficit of sense of the world of to-day, and may be dangerous through its political consequences. Keywords: Control, History, Identity, Otherness, Postmodernity, Power, Self, Territory.

Democratic policing is now a widely and more increasingly used approach to policing around the world. New challenges produced both by the media and the law as well as the internal command and control issues call for the basic reformulation of the foundations of democratic policing. An establishment of oversight institutions over police actions is one of the items of democratic policing undoubtedly. The important opportunities to promote the oversight may emerge from the broader political changes or reforms such as the election of new political leaders, transitions to democracy, or through implementing system of human rights protection.
