The genus Impatiens consists of over 1000 species distributed in the Old World tropics and subtropics. In India, the genus is represented by more than 200 species that occur mainly in three major centers of diversity, Western Himalayas, North East India, and the Western Ghats, of which the state of Kerala harbours 72 species, most of which are rare, endangered or threatened.

The genus Chlorophytum Ker Gawler (1808: 1071) is one of the major genera of family Asparagaceae, with about 190 species (Govaerts et al. 2015). It is distributed in the old world tropics, especially in Africa, Asia and Australia (Poulsen & Nordal 2005, Mabberley 2005). According to Malpure & Yadav (2009) the genus is represented by 17 species in India, of which 15 is occur in the Western Ghats. Recently, four more species of Chlorophytum have been described from Western Ghats of India: Chlorophytum belgaumense Chandore et al. (2012: 527), C. sharmae Adsul et al. (2014: 9503), C. palghatense K.M.P. Kumar & Adsul in Kumar et al. (2014: 282) and C. clivorum Mathew & George (2015: 379).

Land use is the human utilization for money, private, recreational, conservational and administrative purposes. The idea of land use is firmly interwoven with human network advancement. Examples of human turn of events and land use have molded the earth legitimately and internationally since ancient occasions. Current improvement designs, along with highlights of the common habitat and the outcomes of past advancement exercises, decide future advancement openings, and furthermore the requirement for rebuilding or upgrade of natural assets. North-east India is the abode of highly endemic flora and fauna preserving the pristine environment with little human interference until recent times. However, for past two decades a drastic change in the land use pattern in the region has been observed which may threaten the fragile ecological balance of the region. Tripura, known as one of the seven sisters, is a bamboo resource and second largest rubber producer in India. Tripura has the highest number of primate species found in any Indian state. However, as compared to its other sisters, the state is economically backward. The land use of the state is undergoing rapid change which is facilitated to a great extent by rapidly increasing population. The present paper deals with the changing land use of Tripura especially in the last two and a half decades. The objective of the study is to analyse the changing land use of the state in general and changes in agricultural and non-agricultural land use in particular based upon the data collected from secondary sources like Statistical Abstract of Tripura, Population Tables of Census 1991, 2001 and 2011 along with the information collected from various government websites.

A checklist of the legumes of Kerala State is presented.  This exhaustive checklist is an outcome of extensive field surveys, collection, identification and documentation of family Leguminosae carried out across Kerala State during the period 2006–2019.  A total of 448 taxa were recorded under five subfamilies and 115 genera.  The majority of the legumes are herbs and shrubs, the rest being trees and woody climbers.  About 81 taxa are endemic to India, especially confined to the Western Ghats biodiversity hotspot, out of which 17 are endemic to  Kerala.  The state is home to two Critically Endangered and six Endangered legumes, facing severe threat of extinction.  Crotalaria is the dominant legume genus in the state with 62 taxa followed by Desmodium and Indigofera.  About 57 genera are represented by single species each.  Legumes are treated according to the latest phylogenetic classification of the Legume Phylogeny Working Group (LPWG).  Updated nomenclature, habit, native countries, voucher specimens, and images of endemic and lesser known legumes found in the state are provided.  Crotalaria multiflora var. kurisumalayana (Sibichen & Nampy) Krishnaraj & N. Mohanan is reduced as a synonym to C. multiflora (Arn.) Benth.

In the present paper, we report the occurrence of the cricket subgenus Gryllitara Chopard, 1931 from India along with the description of a new species, Itara (Gryllitara) pilosa sp. nov., from the state of Kerala, South India. Suitable plates with close-up details have been presented to describe the new species, as well as for Itara (Itara) vietnamensis Gorochov being reported from North East India.

Abstract. Prediction of heavy rains associated with orography is still a challenge, even for the most advanced state-of-art high-resolution Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) modeling systems. The aim of this study is to evaluate the performance of UK Met Office Unified Model (UM) in predicting heavy and very heavy rainfall exceeding 80th and 90th percentiles which occurs mainly due to the forced ascent of air parcels over the mountainous regions of the Western Ghats (WGs) and North East (NE) – states of India during the monsoon seasons of 2007 to 2018. Apart from the major upgrades in the dynamical core of UM from New Dynamics (ND) to Even Newer Dynamics for General Atmospheric Modeling of the environment (ENDGame), the horizontal resolution of the model has been increased from 40 km and 50 vertical levels in 2007 to 10 km and 70 vertical levels in 2018. In general, it is expected that the prediction of heavy rainfall events improves with increased horizontal resolution of the model. The evaluation based on verification metrics, including Probability of Detection (POD), False Alarm Ratio (FAR), Frequency Bias (Bias) and Critical Success Index (CSI), indicate that model rainfall forecasts from 2007 to 2018 have improved from 0.29 to 0.38 (CSI), 0.45 to 0.55 (POD) and 0.55 to 0.45 in the case of FAR over WGs for rainfall exceeding the 80th percentile (CAT-1) in the Day-1 forecast. Additionally, the Symmetric Extremal Dependence Index (SEDI) is also used with special emphasis on verification of extreme and rare events. SEDI also shows an improvement from 0.47 to 0.62 and 0.16 to 0.41 over WGs and NE-states during the period of study, suggesting an improved skill of predicting heavy rains over the mountains. It has also been found that the improvement is consistent and comparatively higher over WGs than NE-states.

Sumi (also known by its exonym ‘Sema’) is a Tibeto-Burman language spoken in Nagaland, North-east India. It is one of the major languages of the state, with an estimated 242,000 speakers living primarily in Zunheboto district, as well as in the major cities of Kohima and Dimapur. Bradley (1997) places Sumi (referred to as Sema), among the ‘Southern Naga’ languages, which include Angami (also known as Tenyidie) and Ao, in contrast to the ‘Northern Naga’ languages such as Konyak and Nocte. Burling (2003) offers a more conservative classification, placing Sumi (referred to as Simi) in an ‘Angami-Pochuri’ group containing Angami, Chakhesang (Chokri and Kheza) and Mao. Four main dialects of Sumi have been identified: the Western dialect, the Eastern dialect, the Chizolimi dialect, and the Central dialect. The Central dialect is the standard dialect used in published works of Sumi (Sreedhar 1976: 4–5).

The genus Chlorophytum Ker Gawler (1808: 1071) (Asparagaceae), includes about 200 species (Govaerts et al. 2012) distributed in the Old World tropics (Mabberley 2017). In India, this genus is represented by 19 species (Malpure & Yadav 2009; Chandore et al. 2012), including the new species proposed below. Indian species of Chlorophytum are usually forest dwellers and are cryptophytic with aboveground organs disappearing in the dry season (Chandore et al. 2012). Most of the members of Chlorophytum, reported from India have their distribution in Western Ghats except C. nepalense (Lindley 1826: 277) Baker (1876: 320), C. comosum (Thunberg 1794: 63) Jacques (1862: 345), C. breviscapum Dalzell (1850: 141), and C. arundinaceum Baker (1876: 323) growing in northeastern Himalaya (Adsul 2015).

India is a co-habitation of different casts, socio-cultural, religious groups of people. It is also observed in Assam, the state in the North-East India. It should be noted that the state of Assam has a reputation worldwide in the field of tea production. Since the beginning of tea production in Assam in the 19th century, the Tea Community social group of Assam has been formed with a large number of people working hard in the tea gardens. In this way tea farmers living in Assam since 19th century have become an independent community with their own social and cultural characteristics. The Tea Community of Assam has a lot of individual Characteristics in the socio-cultural aspects. This study attempts to discuss their social folk customs and believes.
