This cross-sectional study aimed to identify the period prevalence of visual impairment (VI) and blindness among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people attending an Indigenous urban primary healthcare service, eye care practitioner referrals for those with VI and any opportunities to improve care delivery. Visual acuity (VA) examinations, using a Snellen chart, are performed as part of routine annual health assessments offered to children and adults. This study included patients aged ≥5 years (n=1442) who had a health assessment conducted between 1 January 2015 and 31 December 2016 and provided consent for the use of their health assessment information for research. Of patients with available data, 2.4% (33/1374) experienced VI, defined as presenting VA worse than 6/12 to 6/60 in the better-seeing eye. VI was more common in those aged ≥60 years (14/136; 10.3%) and was significantly associated with increasing age (P<0.001). No patients experienced blindness, defined as presenting VA worse than 6/60 in the better-seeing eye. All patients with VI were aged ≥16 years. Nine (27%) of the 33 patients with VI in the better-seeing eye were referred to an optometrist or an ophthalmologist. The low period prevalence of VI and no blindness in this study are positive findings. The findings also indicate that routine VA testing of older adults, especially those aged ≥60 years, should be conducted to avoid missing those not having an annual health assessment.

Background: Nutritional Anemia and visual impairment among school age children are recognized as major public health problem in India. Authors objective was to study prevalence of anemia and visual impairment among school going adolescents of Vadodara and Surat city of Gujarat, India. Methods: This cross sectional study was carried during period from April 2015 to March 2016. Total 8 schools were selected from Vadodara and Surat city by purposive sampling. After taking the permission of principals of schools and informed written consent of the parents of children, 859 children from these schools were examined for anaemia and visual impairment. The data was collected by predesign, pretested proforma and analysed using SPSS version 17 (Trial version). Results: Out of total 859 children 421(49.1%) were female. Mean age of the study children was 8.95±1.52 years. The prevalence of anemia in children in present study was 61.6 % (529 children). The prevalence of anemia in female (274, 65.1%) was higher than males (255, 58.2%). Moderate visual impairment and blindness was 5.9% in girls and 8.2% in boys respectively. Severe visual impairment and blindness was 2.1% in girls and 2.7% in boys respectively and the gender difference was not statistically significant. Though 61(7.1%) children had moderate to severe visual impairment to blindness only 21 (2.4%) children were wearing spectacles. Conclusions: High prevalence of anaemia and visual impairment among these children needs great attention and health education.

Objective The focus of this study was to evaluate the visual status of mine workers who were directly involved in mining and/or are exposed to the mining environment. Methods A hospital based cross-sectional study was conducted. Four hundred and six (406) workers were conveniently sampled for the study. Information on their socio-demographic data was also collected. In addition, all participants underwent ophthalmic examination. Results The mean age of the workers was 41.1 years. Visual impairment was found in 114 (28.1%) of the study population of which refractive error (56.8%) was the major cause. Presbyopia was also observed in 45.5% of the workers with only 30.3% of them wearing near correction. The prevalence of eye diseases were pterygium/pingueculae (25.8%), conjunctivitis (26.8%), suspected glaucoma (15.3%), and cataract (7.4%). Conclusions Visual impairment and eye diseases were found among the miners.

Refractive error is a condition in which the cornea and lens fail to focus the light, resulting in reduced visual efficiency. Twelve million children are experiencing refractive errors worldwide and uncorrected refractive errors in children have been reported to cause asthenopia. This study aimed to determine the association between the types of refractive errors and asthenopia in children. This cross-sectional study was conducted on 111 students aged 10-13 years old in a public elementary school in Indonesia, SDN Penjaringan 10, in 2019. A questionnaire was used to assess asthenopia and the Snellen Chart, trial frames, and trial lenses were used for refractive errors examination. It was demonstrated that 87.4% of respondents experienced asthenopia, and 53.2% of respondents suffered from uncorrected refractive errors, mostly due to myopia. Fisher’s exact test results showed an association between refractive errors and asthenopia (p=0.019) with all myopic students experienced asthenopia. However, there was no significant association between astigmatism and asthenopia (p=0.754). In conclusion, not all types of refractive errors are associated with asthenopia.
