There is evidence of the effects of exposure to workplace bullying on victims who may manifest symptoms of depression, anxiety, burnout, somatization, sleep difficulties, and posttraumatic stress; however, few studies have examined the impact of workplace bullying on suicidal ideation. The purpose of the present study was to examine the relationship between exposure to workplace bullying and suicidal ideation and how feelings of defeat and entrapment mediate this relationship. Also, it was intended to examine how rumination moderates this relationship. As a framework, it was used the Integrated Motivational-Volitional Model of Suicide Behavior (IMV) in which has been integrated several theoretical models of suicide. A total of 898 employed subjects participated in this cross-sectional design study. To examine the hypotheses, PLS-SEM model was used using the SMART-PLS program. Exposure to workplace bullying,defeat and entrapment were positively and significantly related to suicidal ideation. Meanwhile,feelings of defeat and entrapment mediated the relationship between exposure to workplace bullying and suicidal ideation and rumination moderated the relation between exposure to workplace bullying and feelings defeat. The results of the present study have both theoretical and practical implications, among which we can mention that results support and expand the IMV model of suicidal behavior. The exposure to workplace bullying brings a challenge for the psychologists in the occupational health context, and human resources practitioners in the management of this phenomenon in organizations to prevent it and in a worst case scenario, to respond in an effective manner due to its individual and organizational impact.

Purpose To fill the previous research gap, focusing on two constructs, i.e. perceived supervisor support (PSS) and psychological capital (PsyCap), this study aims to explore the mechanism underlying the relationship between teaching–research conflict (TRC) and job burnout among university teachers using the lens of job demands–resources (JD-R) model. Design/methodology/approach First, theoretically grounded hypotheses linking teaching–research conflict, PSS and PsyCap to job burnout were formulated. Then, a cross-sectional design was used to test the theoretical model presented in this study. Findings The results showed that TRC was positively linked to emotional exhaustion (EE) and depersonalization (DP), but negatively linked to personal accomplishment; PSS moderated the effect of TRC on both EE and DP but did not act as a moderator in the relationship between TRC and personal accomplishment; and PsyCap moderated the effect of TRC on all the three dimensions of job burnout. Research limitations/implications Given that the data were collected from single-source, the study was vulnerable to the common method variance. Besides, the relative small sample size limits the representativeness of the sample. Moreover, the cross-sectional design cannot confirm causal relationship between variables. Despite these limitations, the findings of this research can potentially inform effective interventions aimed at reducing the effect of TRC on job burnout among university teachers. Originality/value Based on the JD-R model, PSS and PsyCap are used to explore the effect of TRC on job burnout for the first time.

Purpose – Substantial research has examined the pivotal role of supervisor positive humor in generating employee outcomes. To date, though, little is known about the relationship between supervisor humor and newcomers’ adjustment. The purpose of this paper is to contribute to this gap by examining the effect of supervisor positive humor on newcomers’ adjustment. In doing so, the authors highlighted relational identification with the supervisor as a mediating mechanism that explains the aforementioned association. Design/methodology/approach – Data were drawn from 117 newcomers. In order to collect the data the authors used the snowball method. Also, hierarchical regression analysis was conducted. Findings – The results demonstrated that supervisor positive humor affects employees’ relational identification with the supervisor which, in turn, positively relates to newcomers’ adjustment. Research limitations/implications – Data were collected using a cross-sectional design and, therefore, the authors cannot directly assess causality. Moreover, the authors used self-report measures which may strengthen the causal relationships. Originality/value – To the best of the knowledge, this is the first study that illustrates the role of supervisor humor in enhancing both newcomers’ relational identification and adjustment.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to examine the impact of sales promotion display on customer intentions to purchase and repurchase, focusing on the moderating roles of perceived product quality and price fairness.Design/methodology/approachThis study employs a descriptive, quantitative, non-experimental research method using a cross-sectional design with a self-administered questionnaire. In total, 415 department store customers responded to the survey through an online research panel provider in Australia.FindingsThe results indicated that sales promotion display significantly affects the purchase and repurchase intentions. The findings also highlight the moderating role of perceived product quality and price fairness on customer shopping intentions. Lastly, it is confirmed that the joint moderating effects of perceived product quality and price fairness in the relationship between sales promotion display, purchase and repurchase intentions are significant.Practical implicationsBased on the study findings, managers could drive customer purchase and repurchase intentions using suitable visual objects in sales promotion and their appropriate in-store placement.Originality/valueThe present study introduced sales promotion display as a new dimension of store physical environment. This is the first study to investigate the relationship between sales promotion display and customer shopping intentions and incorporates customers' cognitive perceptions of price and quality in the conditioned effect of sales promotion display on shopping intentions. Moreover, this study brings up new insight into retailing literature by applying the classical conditioning theory in examining the links between sales promotion display and customer shopping intentions.

Background: The risk of suicide for agricultural workers in parts of the United Kingdom (UK) is almost twice the national average. Existing literature has suggested that adverse farming events, where failure is determined by uncontrollable and unpredictable forces, may be to blame. Yet, the impact of such events on farmer suicidality has not been explicitly explored. Aims: The present paper therefore aimed to investigate the relationship between adverse farming events and suicidal ideation in farmers. Methods: A cross-sectional questionnaire battery was disseminated between July 2018 and February 2019, and completed by 170 adult farmers. Results: Over a 12-month period, 88.8% reported that they had experienced an adverse farming event and 32.9% said that they had experienced suicidal thoughts. Correlational analysis revealed a relationship between these variables. Conclusions: The high prevalence of suicidal ideation within farmers demonstrates a critical need for intervention. Likewise, the prevalence of adverse farming events suggests that interventions need to be appropriately tailored, with greater understanding about the impact of such events on the mental wellbeing of farmers.

<p>Detrital tracer thermochronology exploits the relationship between bedrock cooling age and elevation, whereby detrital cooling age distributions can inform the pattern of erosion in the upstream area. Typically bedrock ages exhibit a positive relation with elevation, since the exhumation path from the closure isotherm to the surface is longer. Therefore, spatially uniform erosion should yield a detrital cooling age distribution that mirrors the catchment’s hypsometric curve, corrected for mineral fertility. Applying thermochronometers is time consuming and expensive, hence measured detrital age populations have a limited sample size (rarely exceeding 100 grains) and only provide an approximation of the natural continuous detrital age distribution. With such limited sample sizes, discerning between two detrital age distributions resulting from different erosional patterns may be statistically impossible at a high confidence level.</p><p>Here, we investigate the impact of sample size on the detrital cooling age distributions and the resulting uncertainty in addressing the erosional pattern of the upstream area. To do so, we forward model a continuous detrital age distribution as a function given parameters, such as catchment hypsometry, mineral fertility, exhumation rate, analytical uncertainty and erosion scenario. A random subsample of the entire detrital population is drawn for each possible sample size, from which an approximate cumulative distribution function (CDF) is calculated. Then we compute the divergence of the approximate CDF from the reference continuous CDF as well as from the continuous CDF obtained for a different erosion scenario. The confidence level at which an approximate CDF can be tied to a specific erosion scenario is iteratively estimated for each sample size. We carry out the outlined approach for a synthetic catchment with elevations ranging between 0.5-2.2 km, where bedrock cooling ages increase by 30 My/km and prescribing a 10% standard deviation for single grain ages.</p><p>We find that, if the location of the erosion maximum coincides with the peak of the hypsometric curve, 100 grains do not suffice to resolve a local tenfold increase in erosion at the 95% confidence level. In this worst case scenario 240 grains would be required. However, for the same case, 70 grains are enough at the 68% confidence level. This study provides a method to consistently quantify the uncertainty of detrital tracer thermochronology as a function of sample size, case-specific variables and the initial scientific question.</p>

Dysmenorrhea is a menstrual disorder often faced by adolescent girls. In some people with dysmenorrhoea, perceived pain  can interfere with daily physical activity giving the impact on quality of life and productivity of students in the school. This study aims to determine the relationship between dysmenorrhea and learning activities at SMA Negeri 3 Palembang. This study was an analytic observational study with cross sectional design conducted in November-Desember 2015. The population in this study were all students of SMA Negeri  3 Palembang. The samples were obtained by total sampling with total sample of 631 female student. Data were obtained through a questionnaire given to respondents. The results were analyzed by using Fisher's Exact Test. From this study, the prevalence of students who suffer from dysmenorrhea was 91.3%. Number of respondent with dysmenorrhea and disturbed study activity was 56.4%. Results of bivariat analysis showed a highly significant relationship between dysmenorrhea and study activity (p=0.000).

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between workplace bullying and EVLN outcomes with psychological contract violation as a mediator and workplace friendship as a moderator. Design/methodology/approach Data were collected from 835 full-time Indian managerial employees working in different Indian organizations. Findings Results revealed that workplace bullying positively related to exit and neglect and negatively related to voice and loyalty. PCV mediated bullying–EVLN outcomes relationship and effects of workplace bullying on proposed outcomes were weaker in the presence of high workplace friendship. Research limitations/implications A cross-sectional design and use of self-reported questionnaire data are few limitations of this study. Originality/value This study adds to the limited literature examining EVLN typology in response to workplace bullying. This study is one of the rare attempts to examine bullying–outcomes relationships in the Indian context.

Purpose This paper aims to examine the impact of goal compatibility on value co-creation in a retailer–manufacturer outsourcing relationship. This paper also examines whether power balance, information symmetry and duration of engagement influence the above causal relationship. Design/methodology/approach The study used a structured questionnaire to test the relationship between goal compatibility and value co-creation through power balance and information symmetry, along with the moderating role of duration of the engagement. The instrument was administered to 230 top and senior management representatives from manufacturing firms located in 11 major Indian industrial cities. Findings Goal compatibility is significantly related to value co-creation. The results had also shown that power balance and information symmetry mediated the relationship between goal compatibility and value co-creation. Research limitations/implications Future researchers should examine these complex phenomena across more diverse industries and settings to enhance generalizability. Data should be gathered from both side of the channel dyad. Data should be also collected longitudinally to extend the current cross-sectional design. Practical implications Understanding the association between goal compatibility and value co-creation, with mediating and moderating factors can provide useful information to strengthen the inter-organizational relationship with maximizing mutual benefits. Originality value This research offers new insights into the links between goal compatibility and value co-creation. The retailers engaged in outsourcing can use these value drivers to understand their manufacturer and their respective priorities for value co-creation.

Orientation: Workplace bullying has detrimental effects on employee well-being. Emotional intelligence may moderate the relationship between workplace bullying and flourishing.Research purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the nature of the relationship between workplace bullying and flourishing and to investigate the moderating role of emotional intelligence in the workplace bullying–flourishing relationship.Motivation for the study: There is a paucity of studies exploring the moderating role of personal resources such as emotional intelligence in the relationship between workplace bullying and flourishing.Research approach/design and method: The study used a cross-sectional design, quantitative approach and a convenience sampling method. Employees from a higher education institution (N = 1102) participated in this research. Descriptive, correlation and moderation analysis was used to analyse the data.Main findings: The results showed that there was a significant negative relationship between workplace bullying and flourishing. Emotional intelligence significantly moderated the relationship between workplace bullying and flourishing.Practical/managerial implications: Organisations should develop and/or strengthen the level of emotional intelligence in employees in order to reduce the negative effect of workplace bullying on well-being.Contribution/value-add: The findings of this research contribute to the limited body of research investigating personal resources such as emotional intelligence as a moderator in the bullying-well-being relationship.

Purpose Recent years have seen an increasing interest in leader’s use of humor among organizational scholars. In this regard, leader positive humor has been shown to be related to leader effectiveness. However, to date there is limited theoretical and empirical attention regarding the relationship between self-deprecating humor in particular and leadership effectiveness. As such, the purpose of this paper is to examine the impact of leader’s self-deprecating humor on follower’s perceptions of leader effectiveness. In doing so, the authors also encompassed trust in leader as a mediator. Design/methodology/approach Data were collected from three different samples. The authors examined the hypotheses using hierarchical regression, bootstrapping analysis and Sobel test. Findings Results produced consistent evidence that the use of self-deprecating humor by the leader positively affects his/her perceived effectiveness and that this relationship is partially mediated by trust in leader. Research limitations/implications A main limitation of the present research relates to its cross-sectional design that cannot infer causality. In addition, data were gathered from a single source. As such, this may raise the possibility of common method bias. Originality/value The present paper contributes to the limited theoretical and empirical organizational research regarding the role of leader self-deprecating humor. More specifically, this is the first study, to the best of authors’ knowledge that links this type of humor to his/her effectiveness.
