Purpose The study aims to investigate backlogs within the picking procedures, to find out what is causing storage picking bottlenecks, and to estimate its effect on creating throughout warehouse picking operations. Design/methodology/approach For this study, a survey questionnaire was used to collect data from a primary source. The staff of the Gulf Nails Enterprise was taken into account as the population of the study. A total of 20 responses were recorded from the population of 50 persons employed in the company. The collected data was analyzed quantitatively to bring out the results. Findings The findings confirmed that most of the warehouse pickup area bottlenecks occur due to the least adaptation towards technologies. It is shown that the bottleneck issue could affect 20 to 30 percent of the production line. It is also evidenced that not only tools but strategic planning and efforts by the staff are extremely important in solving a bottleneck issue. Research limitations/implications The study recommended that an inventory management system would keep the bottlenecks in check. Introducing modern technology could help to solve such issues so that human efforts would not be wasted. It is also suggested that the firm should not rely fully on technology solutions as it is also one of the causes of bottlenecks. Social implications This paper will help understand, recognize and solve the various issues faced by the majority of companies in the area of warehouse pickups, not only in Oman but outside as well. Originality/Value There has been a lot of studies and research on several areas of warehouse operations but none so far on the topic of the general pickup area of the warehouse.

Modelling Inventory Management System at Distribution Company: Case Study The paper presents a case study on improving inventory management at the distribution company which operates in Latvia. The case study is focused on application of different modelling approaches in inventory management under uncertain demand, namely inventory models, simulation models and optimization model. The functionality of each model as well as its benefits for the current problem is discussed in the end of the paper.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to show how collaborative information technology (IT) tools and a crowdsourcing model can be leveraged for the purpose of strategic planning. To achieve this objective, a formal method of open strategic planning (OSP) is proposed. Design/methodology/approach Based on a review of the literature a set of activities, stakeholders, and governing rules are identified in the form of an OSP method. The proposed planning method is implemented in a case study of strategic planning in an Australian university. Observations by the research team, and archival records were used to ascertain the relevance of the used method. Findings A method for OSP is presented and assessed. The method contains four phases: pre-planning, idea submission, idea refinement, and plan development. These phases cover the activities required from conceptualization to preparing and publishing the strategic plan. The findings clarify how the principles of OSP helped the organization to include more stakeholders and provided the opportunity to make the planning process transparent through use of a collaborative IT tool. Practical implications The study provides managers and planning consultants with detailed guidelines to implement the concept of open strategy. Originality/value This study is among the few to propose a method for OSP based on empirical research. The study also shows how collaborative IT tools can be used for high-level organizational tasks such as strategic planning.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate a multi-dimensional second-order operationalization of strategic planning, to advance the understanding of this construct. Design/methodology/approach Data on the strategic planning construct were collected using survey questionnaire administered to 123 small and medium-sized manufacturing enterprises (SMEs) in India. Findings The findings clearly reveal that the strategic planning construct can be effectively operationalized as a second-order multi-dimensional construct. Research limitations/implications Data for this study have been collected primarily from SMEs of manufacturing firms. Further investigation in other kinds of firms may help in the enhancement of the construct. Originality/value Scholars have long called for using second-order constructs in strategy research. Operationalizing multi-dimensional constructs as unidimensional leads to inaccurate results and interpretations. By demonstrating a second-order operationalization of strategic planning, the authors illustrate better ways of operationalizing a construct. At the same time, this operationalization should help in better understanding of the implications of strategic planning on firm performance.

Inventory management systems and dynamic reliability measures and controls remain challenging at every stage, especially when time variances and operating conditions are considered. An inventory management system must maintain its adeptness over time while coping with the uncertainty of inventory flow. Unexpected delays during inventory movement can harm the reliability and robustness of the entire system. This paper introduces a method of quantifying the reliability of an inventory management system. Also, a novel, reliability-based robust design optimization model has been developed to optimally allocate and schedule time while considering uncertainty associated with inventory movement. The processes involved include purchasing, shipping, receiving, tracking, warehousing, storage, and turnover. A case study of a furniture company in Saudi Arabia is presented to demonstrate the efficacy of the model.

PurposeThe purpose of the present study is to identify and measure economically the losses related to inventory management in an oil refinery.Design/methodology/approachAn exploratory case study was conducted to search for a better understanding of a phenomenon and its implications.FindingsThe results obtained based on the case study suggest the need to observe this phenomenon in other contexts and take managerial actions that will eliminate waste as one of the forms of generating value for the company. The results were related to each other and to the traditional metrics of inventory management and can be used as a base to improve mathematical and computational models for production planning and scheduling and also performance indicators.Originality/valueNo studies have been found that attempt to measure the economic losses derived from inventory management and their capacity in this environment.

Spare parts inventory management is very important to ensure smooth operation of maintenance department. The main objectives of inventory management of spare parts are to ensure the availability of spares and materials for the maintenance tasks and increase the productivity of the maintenance department. This research centred on the development of the Computerised Inventory Management System (CIMS) for the maintenance team at Weida Integrated Industries Sdn. Bhd. The inventory management technique used to control the spare parts inventory in this research was the basic Economic Order Quantity models (EOQ). However, the CIMS developed is unique as it has the ability in handling inventories in multiple-storage locations. The CIMS was written using the Visual Basic 2010 software. This CIMS has the abilities to keep records and process the spare parts information effectively and faster besides helping the user to perform spare parts ordering tasks compared to the current manual recording. In addition, the ordering quantity and frequency for the CIMS is determined through the EOQ technique. However, observation indicates that the overall average inventory level currently at the factory is lower than the expected overall average inventory level produced by the CIMS. This is due to the fact that the CIMS was unable to consider the opening stock in ordering the inventories. Therefore, further improvements are needed to optimize the performance of the system such as using the EOQ with the reorder point technique, the periodic or continuous review system.
