The present paper shows a numerical study of the Co-flow turbulent flame configuration using the Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) modelling with detailed chemistry. The presumed Probability Density Function (PDF) model combined with the k-Ɛ turbulence model is adopted. The GRI Mech-3.0 mechanism that involves 53 species and 325 reactions is used. The effect of the turbulent Schmidt number Sct and the C1ε constant in the turbulent dissipation transport equation is highlighted. Despite the simplicity of RANS approach compared to other complex models such as LES and DNS, the results show that this approach is still able to simulate the turbulent flame.

This work presents a numerical study on the turbulent Schmidt numbers in jets in crossflow. This study contains two main parts. In the first part, the problem of the proper choice of the turbulent Schmidt number in the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) jet in crossflow mixing simulations is outlined. The results of RANS employing the shear-stress transport (SST) model of Menter and its curvature correction modification and different turbulent Schmidt number values are validated against experimental data. The dependence of the optimal value of the turbulent Schmidt number on the dynamic RANS model is studied. Furthermore, a comparison is made with the large-eddy simulation (LES) results obtained using the wall-adapted local eddy viscosity (WALE) model. The accuracy given by LES is superior in comparison to RANS results. This leads to the second part of the current study, in which the time-averaged mean and fluctuating velocity and scalar fields from LES are used for the evaluation of the turbulent viscosities, turbulent scalar diffusivities, and the turbulent Schmidt numbers in a jet in crossflow configuration. The values obtained from the LES data are compared with those given by the RANS modeling. The deviations are discussed, and the possible ways for the RANS model improvements are outlined.

Modern gas turbines in power systems employ lean premixed combustion to lower flame temperature and thus achieve low NOx emissions. The fuel/air mixing process and its impacts on emissions are of paramount importance to combustor performance. In this study, the mixing process in a methane-fired model combustor was studied through an integrated experimental and numerical study. The experimental results show that at the dump location, the time-averaged fuel/air unmixedness is less than 10% over a wide range of testing conditions, demonstrating the good mixing performance of the specific premixer on the time-averaged level. A study of the effects of turbulent Schmidt number on the unmixedness prediction shows that for the complex flow field involved, it is challenging for Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) simulations with constant turbulent Schmidt number to accurately predict the mixing process throughout the combustor. Further analysis reveals that the production and scalar dissipation are the key physical processes controlling the fuel/air mixing. Finally, the NOx formation in this model combustor was analyzed and modelled through a flamelet-based approach, in which NOx formation is characterized through flame-front NOx and its post-flame formation rate obtained from one-dimensional laminar premixed flames. The effect of fuel/air unmixedness on NOx formation is accounted for through the presumed probability density functions (PDF) of mixture fraction. Results show that the measured NOx in the model combustor are bounded by the model predictions with the fuel/air unmixedness being 3% and 5% of the maximum unmixedness. In the context of RANS, the accuracy in NOx prediction depends on the unmixedness prediction which is sensitive to turbulent Schmidt number.

AbstractThe temperature rise of photovoltaic’s cells deteriorates its conversion efficiency. The use of a phase change material (PCM) layer linked to a curved photovoltaic PV panel so-called PV-mirror to control its temperature elevation has been numerically studied. This numerical study was carried out to explore the effect of inner fins length on the thermal and electrical improvement of curved PV panel. So a numerical model of heat transfer with solid-liquid phase change has been developed to solve the Navier–Stokes and energy equations. The predicted results are validated with an available experimental and numerical data. Results shows that the use of fins improve the thermal load distribution presented on the upper front of PV/PCM system and maintained it under 42°C compared with another without fins and enhance the PV cells efficiency by more than 2%.

Gasdynamics of detonation waves was widely studied within last hundred years - analytically, experimentally, and numerically. The majority of classical studies of the XX century were concentrated on inviscid aspects of detonation structure and propagation. There was a widespread opinion that detonation is such a fast phenomenon that viscous e¨ects should have insigni¦cant in§uence on its propagation. When the era of calculations based on the Reynolds-averaged Navier- Stokes (RANS) and large eddy simulation approaches came into effect, researchers pounced on practical problems with complex geometry and with the interaction of many physical effects. There is only a limited number of works studying the in§uence of viscosity on detonation propagation in supersonic §ows in ducts (i. e., in the presence of boundary layers).

A three-dimensional numerical study of a single droplet splashing vertically on a liquid film is presented. The numerical method is based on the finite volume method (FVM) of Navier–Stokes equations coupled with the volume of fluid (VOF) method, and the adaptive local mesh refinement technology is adopted. It enables the liquid–gas interface to be tracked more accurately, and to be less computationally expensive. The relationship between the diameter of the free rim, the height of the crown with different numbers of collision Weber, and the thickness of the liquid film is explored. The results indicate that the crown height increases as the Weber number increases, and the diameter of the crown rim is inversely proportional to the collision Weber number. It can also be concluded that the dimensionless height of the crown decreases with the increase in the thickness of the dimensionless liquid film, which has little effect on the diameter of the crown rim during its growth.

The simple frigate shape (SFS) as defined by The Technical Co-operative Program (TTCP), is a simplified model of the frigate, which helps to investigate the basic flow fields of a frigate. In this paper, the flow fields of the different modified SFS models, consisting of a bluff body superstructure and the deck, were numerically studied. A parametric study was conducted by varying both the superstructure length L and width B to investigate the recirculation zone behind the hangar. The size and the position of the recirculation zones were compared between different models. The numerical simulation results show that the size and the location of the recirculation zone are significantly affected by the superstructure length and width. The results obtained by Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes method were also compared well with both the time averaged Improved Delayed Detached-Eddy Simulation results and the experimental data. In addition, by varying the model size and inflow velocity, various flow fields were numerically studied, which indicated that the changing of Reynolds number has tiny effect on the variation of the dimensionless size of the recirculation zone. The results in this study have certain reference value for the design of the frigate superstructure.

This paper investigates the physical processes involved in the water filling and air expelling process of a pipe with multiple air valves under water slow filling condition, and develops a fully coupledwater–air two-phase stratified numerical model for simulating the process. In this model, the Saint-Venant equations and the Vertical Average Navier–Stokes equations (VANS) are respectively applied to describe the water and air in pipe, and the air valve model is introduced into the VANS equations of air as the source term. The finite-volume method and implicit dual time-stepping method (IDTS) with two-order accuracy are simultaneously used to solve this numerical model to realize the full coupling between water and air movement. Then, the model is validated by using the experimental data of the pressure evolution in pipe and the air velocity evolution of air valves, which respectively characterize the water filling and air expelling process. The results show that the model performs well in capturing the physical processes, and a reasonable agreement is obtained between numerical and experimental results. This agreement demonstrates that the proposed model in this paper offers a practical method for simulating water filling and air expelling process in a pipe with multiple air valves under water slow filling condition.
