This study was designed to assess the suitability of using sweet potato leaf meal (SPLM) as a substitute for the complete or partial replacement of soya beans as protein source in fish feed formulation. One hundred and sixty Clarias gariepinus fingerlings were fed different levels of experimental diets containing 40% crudeprotein. Sweet potato leaf mealwas used at different levels of10% (Diet/Treatment 2 i.e. T2), 20% (T3) and 30% (T4), while 0% served as control (T1). Fingerlings were fed diet at 5% of their body weight for 42days. This study determined the growth, survival and the best inclusion rate of SPLM in the diet which was conducted in a plastic tank. All experimental diet were accepted by the Clarias gariepinus fingerlings without impairing growth. The highest mean weight gain (2.5+ 0.09g) was obtained in fish fed with 10% SPLM inclusion (T2), while the least (1.8+ 0.09g) was recorded in T4 i.e. 30% inclusion. Similar trend was obtained for length increase, protein efficiency and percentage survival. All fish were good in condition except those offered diet T4. The best SPLM inclusion level of the study was obtained in T2.

AbstractThe feed as a source of energy for the growth of fish is a component of the most important costs 40-89% and the quality should be good. The solution is through research. Research in the form of meal cassava leaves (Monihot utilissima) parents as a source of alternative protein substitute for fish meal in feed formulation catfish (Clarias gariepinus). The design used Complete Random Design with 4 treatments and 3 repetitions. The results showed that for the growth and the survival between treatments were not significant (P <0.5), meaning that all treatments were no differences can be categorized and feed ingredients of flour cassava leaves can replace most of the presence of meal fish  in fish feed formulas African catfish. Growth of the best catfish are on treatment A (55% meal cassava leaf: 00% fish meal) with daily growth of 8.27 grams was 2.61% and the B (40%% meal cassava leaves: 15% meal fish) 5.28 gram with daily growth is 1.86%, followed by C (15%%  meal cassava leaves: 15% meal fish ) 1:51% and D (0% meal cassava leaves : 55% meal fish ) 1:33%. Catfish survival rate was not significant (P <0.5), and relatively equally well A (96.17%), B (94.77) and C (95.92) and the best in treatment for D (96.37 ). Solusinya melalui penelitian. Penelitian berupa tepung daun  singkong (Monihot utilissima) tua sebagai sumber protein alternatif penganti tepung ikan dalam formulasi pakan ikan lele (Clarias gariepinus). Rancangan digunakan Rancangan Acak Lengkap dengan 4 perlakuan dan 3 kali ulangan. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa untuk pertumbuhan dan kelulusan hidup antar perlakuan tidak signifikan (P < 0,5), artinya semua perlakuan  tidak ada perbedaan dan dapat dikatagorikan bahan pakan dari tepung daun singkong dapat mengantikan sebagian keberadaan tepung ikan dalam formula pakan ikan lele dumbo. Pertumbuhan ikan lele terbaik terdapat pada perlakuan A (55% tepung daun singkong : 00% tepung ikan) 8,27 gram dengan pertumbuhan harian adalah 2.61% dan  pada B (40%  % tepung daun singkong : 15% tepung ikan) 5,28 gram dengan pertumbuhan harian adalah 1.86%, diikuti C (15% % tepung daun singkong :15% tepung ikan) 1.51% dan D (0 % tepung daun singkong : 55% tepung ikan) 1.33%. Tingkat kelangsungan hidup ikan lele tidak signifikan (P < 0,5), dan  relatif sama baiknya A (96,17%), B (94,77) dan C (95,92) dan terbaik pada perlakuan untuk D (96,37). Sebagai pengguna disarankan memakai formulasi pada perlakuan B (40% Tepung ikan dan 15% tepung daun singkong tua). Kata kunci: Ikan lele, Pakan, Tepung ikan, Tepung  Daun Singkong Tua

A 60-days feeding experiment was conducted to evaluate the utilisation of sweet potato leaf meal (SPLM) for replacement of de-oiled rice bran (DORB) in the diets of rohu Labeo rohita (Hamilton, 1822) fingerlings. SPLM has good protein content (22.12%) and digestible energy content (11.81 MJ kg-1). Five iso-nitrogenous (30%) and iso-caloric diets (13.5 MJ kg-1) were prepared by replacing DORB with sweet potato leaf meal (SPLM) at 0% (C), 25% (T1), 50% (T2), 75% (T3) and 100% (T4). Each dietary treatment was tested in triplicates with 12 fingerlings per tank, following completely randomised design. The growth performance and feed utilisation parameters viz., weight gain % (WG), specific growth rate (SGR), protein efficiency ratio (PER) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) were not significantly different (p>0.05) among treatments. The digestive enzyme activity remained unaffected except amylase activity, which increased significantly in 50% SPLM replacement group (T2). Chymotrypsin decreased significantly (p<0.05) in the treatment groups. Metabolic enzymes viz., ATPase activity of liver increased significantly (p<0.05) whereas ALP (alkaline phosphatase) activity in the intestine had irregular pattern. The present study indicates that DORB can be completely replaced by SPLM without affecting growth performance and digestive enzyme activity in the diet of L. rohita.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the floating and stability of fish feed pellets formulated with different concentration of Baobab (Adansonia digitata) leaf meal (BLM). Five isonitrogenous fish feed (35% CP) with varying inclusion levels of Baobab leaf meal (0% BLM, 4% BLM, 8% BLM, 12% BLM and 16% BLM designated as D1, D2, D3, D4 and D5 respectively was used. Ten (10) pellets of each experimental feed were placed in plastic beaker (55 x 25 x 30 cm) for 50 minutes. Feed pellet floatability and stability were recorded every five minutes. Results showed that feed pellet floatability increased significantly (P<0.05) with increase in BLM concentration. Highest feed pellet floatability (41.66 ± 2.88 minutes) was recorded in D5 (16% BLM) and least (0.00 ± 0.00 minutes) in D1 (0% BLM) which sank down immediately. Similarly, feed pellet stability increased significantly (P<0.05) with increase in BLM concentration. Highest pellet stability (42.66 ± 1.17 minutes) was recorded for D5 (16% BLM) and least (18.54 ± 2.10 minutes) in D1 (0% BLM). Based on these findings, it is concluded that 16% BLM inclusion level in fish feed has led to a high pellet floatability and stability. Therefore, Baobab leaf meal (BLM) which is relatively cheap, toxic free, easy to process and available specifically in Northern part of Nigeria is recommended for floating feed formulation.

The experiment was carried out to study the effect on fermented rice hull in diets supplemented with purplesweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L.) leaves meal on performance of bali ducks. A completely randomized design withfive treatments such as diet without rice hull (A), diet contaning 10% rice hull (B), diet containing 10% fermentedrice hull (C), ration contaning 9% rice hull and 1% purple sweet potato leaf meal (D), diet containing 9% fermentedrice hull and 1% purple sweet potato leaf meal (E). Each treatment in three replications consists of 5 female ducks.The variables observed were feed consumption, antioxidant capacity, total egg weight and FCR, and total eggs, eggproduction per day, and means of eggs weight. It showed that diet feed consumption of ducks fed E treatment found3.32% lower (P<0,05), total eggs 47,56% higher (P<0,05) compared to A. In addition, E treatment can increasetotal amount of eggs, egg production per day, and 29,16%, 29,15% dan 12,12% means of eggs (P<0,05) compared toA treatment. It can be concluded that ducks fed diets containing fermented rice hull and purple sweet potato leafmeal supplemented can improve efficiency of diets and production of eggs.

Expanding utilization of conventional fish feed ingredients by man and fish feed industries has necessitated consideration of cheaper and locally available alternatives. A 70-day feeding trial was conducted to assess the effect of substituting graded levels of sundried flamboyant (Delonix regia) leaf meal (SFLM) for groundnut cake on growth and feed utilization of 240 Clarias gariepinus fingerlings at six substitution levels of 0 (control), 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100% in 12 plastic aquaria (50 × 40 × 40 cm). Each dietary treatment was randomly assigned in two replicates each to the aquaria making 12 treatment units and each aquarium had 20 fish. SFLM supplemented diets and fish carcass were proximately analyzed using standard procedures. Mean weight gain (MWG), specific growth rate (SGR) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) were determined. Data obtained were analyzed using descriptive statistics and ANOVA at p ≤ 0.05. Crude protein was highest (68.89%) in fish fed with diet 4, least (64.61%) in fish fed with diet 1 (control) and significantly (p < 0.05) exceeded 60.54% of the pre-treatment fish carcass. Fish fed with diet 3 had significantly (p < 0.05) higher values of MWG (11.73 g), SGR (2.13%/day) and superior FCR (0.451) above which growth and feed utilization indices progressively declined with increase in the substitution level of SFLM. This study revealed that 40% substitution level of the SFLM resulted in the best growth and feed utilization in C. gariepinus. The study demonstrated the considerable potential of flamboyant leaf meal as an alternative protein source, therefore other processing methods are recommended to increase its utilization, reduce feed cost and maximize aquaculture profitability.

Food security is threatened by the global increase of human population, climate change, inequality of wealth distribution, the state of natural resources, peace and sustainability, among others. Aquaculture has become an important part of the food supply, hence contributing to food security. Sustainable fish production, which represents an important affordable protein supply, should therefore involve feed formulation and production techniques that are not dependent on fish meal as the protein source. It is on this basis that bioeconomy becomes very important to promote the resourceful use of biomass for feed, food, biomaterials, and bioenergy. This study presents housefly maggot meal as an efficient alternative protein source to fishmeal and a valuable bioresource. Clarias gariepinus fingerlings (male and female) were fed maggot meal supplemented diets for 24 weeks and we assessed their growth and gonadal development. The findings of this study revealed that maggot-meal-enhanced diets promoted growth and faster gonadal development in fish. Maggot meal represents a quality alternative protein source to fish meal and an excellent bioresource, which can help us attain sustainable aquaculture production.

Preliminary study was made to determine the optimum amount of leaf abrasion and equilibration time of sweet potato leaf inside the thermocouple psychrometer chambers. Based on the trial, the standard equilibration time curve of a Peltier thermocouple for sweet potato leaf was between 2 and 3 hours. To increase the water vapour conductance across the leaf epidermis the waxy leaf cuticle should be removed or broken by abrasion. The result showed that 4 times leaf rubbings was accepted as the most effective way to increase leaf vapour conductance of sweet potato in the psychrometer chambers. In calculating the leaf relative water content, unstressed water of sweet potato leaves require 4 hours imbibition, whereas water stressed of sweet potato leaves require 5 to 6 hours to reach the saturation time. Either leaf water potential or relative water content can be used as a parameter for plant water status in sweet potato.</span><span style="font-size: 10pt;"> </span></p>
