Oregano is used in the production of specific aromatic cheeses, meat products and dough dishes, for the production of medicinal preparations, fragrant soaps, colognes and perfumes. Special interest in oregano in recent years is related to the results of a study of its biological activities, which indicate a wide range of antibacterial, fungicidal, antiviral and antioxidant properties. The subject of this paper is the examination of extracts of plant species of oregano (Origanum vulgare), with the aim of determining the method that is most popular for extracting this plant species and which gives the best yields of extracts. The content of extracted substances in each extract, the content of vitamin C as well as the content of organic acids were determined.

Sempervivum tectorum has a similar effect as aloe vera, which is known in the treatment of various skin diseases. This herb is considered one of the safest remedies for a wide range of skin diseases. Due to its anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties, it also serves as an excellent first aid for burns, stings and bites, because it provides quick relief and calming. Freshly squeezed juice from the leaves of the houseplant is used in the treatment of nervous disorders, epilepsy and restless dreams. The leaves are edible and can be used as an addition to salads or stews. They are not particularly tasty, but as they are rich in water, they can be put in a juicer together with other fruits or vegetables and become a refreshing drink. It is used in folk herbal medicine and as a medicine. The aim of this study was to determine the moisture content, total extracted substances, extract density, vitamin C, organic acids and proteins in house extracts.

Proanthocyanidins represent a unique class of oligomeric and polymeric secondary metabolites found ubiquitously and in considerable amounts in plants and some algae. These substances exhibit a range of rather surprising physical and chemical properties which, once applied to living organisms, are translated into a multitude of biological activities. The latter include antioxidant properties, cancer chemoprevention, anti-inflammatory and anti-diabetic effects as well as some exceptional, yet highly interesting activities, such as anti-nutritional and antimicrobial activity. Despite the wide range of activities and possible medical/agricultural applications of proanthocyanidins, many questions still remain, including issues related to bioavailability, metabolism and the precise biochemical, extra- and intracellular targets and mode(s) of action of these highly potent materials. Among the various physical and chemical interactions of such substances, strong binding to proteins appears to form the basis of many of their biological activities. Once easy-to-use synthetic methods to produce appropriate quantities of pure proanthocyanidins are available, it will be possible to identify the prime biological targets of these oligomers, study oligomer-protein interactions in more detail and develop possible practical applications in medicine and agriculture.

Garcinia morella (Gaertn.) Desr. is an evergreen tree that yields edible fruits, oil, and resin. It is a source of “gamboge”, a gum/resin that has a wide range of uses. The fruits, leaves, and seeds of this tree are rich in bioactive compounds, including xanthones, flavonoids, phenolic acids, organic acids, and terpenoids. Evidence from different studies has demonstrated the antioxidant, antifungal, antiviral, hepatoprotective, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and larvicidal activities of the fruit, leaf, and seed extracts of G. morella. This review summarizes the information on the phytochemicals of G. morella and the biological activities of its active constituents.

The health benefits and toxicity of plant products are largely dependent on their secondary metabolite contents. These compounds are biosynthesized by plants as protection mechanisms against environmental factors and infectious agents. This review discusses the traditional uses, phytochemical constituents and health benefits of plant species in genus Zanthoxylum with a focus on cancer, microbial and parasitic infections, and sickle cell disease as reported in articles published from 1970 to 2021 in peer-reviewed journals and indexed in major scientific databases. Generally, Z. species are widely distributed in Asia, America and Africa, where they are used as food and for disease treatment. Several compounds belonging to alkaloids, flavonoids, terpenoids, and lignans, among others have been isolated from Z. species. This review discusses the biological activities reported for the plant species and their phytochemicals, including anticancer, antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, anti-trypanosomal, antimalarial and anti-sickling properties. The safety profiles and suggestions for conservation of the Z. species were also discussed. Taken together, this review demonstrates that Z. species are rich in a wide range of bioactive phytochemicals with multiple health benefits, but more research is needed towards their practical application in the development of functional foods, nutraceuticals and lead compounds for new drugs.

The genus Achillea L. belongs to Asteraceae (Compositae), the largest family of vascular plants. There are 50 species, which of 24 is endemic in this genus in Turkey. Achillae species are used as a tonic, anti-inflammatory, anti-spasmodic, diaphoretic, diuretic and emmenagogic agents and have been used for treatment of hemorrhage, pneumonia, rheumatic pain and wounds healing traditionally. The imbalanced antioxidant systems leads to various pathophysiological conditions such as inflammation, neurodegenerative diseases and cancer. Achillea species have several components; essential oils, sesquiterpenes and phenolic compounds such as flavonoids and phenolic acids. Phenolic compounds and flavonoids are the most important medicinal metabolites of Achillea species. Flavonoids have been reported to exert a wide range of biological activities including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anti-tumor effects. This study aimed to assess the in vitro antioxidant properties of the methanol extracts from the aerial parts of A. cucullata (ACME) and A. sieheana (ASME) against hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)-induced oxidative stress in human SH-SY5Y neuronal cells. Our study showed that the ACME and ASME provided neuroprotection against H2O2-induced oxidative stress. In conclusion, ACME and ASME might help in reducing oxidative stress for preventive therapy associated with neurodegenerative diseases and cancer.

The thiosemicarbazone derivatives have a wide range of biological activities, such as antioxidant activity. In this study, the antiradical activities of six camphene-based thiosemicarbazones (TSC-1~6) were investigated by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and peroxyl radical scavenging capacity (PSC) assays, respectively, and the results reveal that TSC1~6 exhibited good abilities for scavenging free radicals in a dose-dependent way. Compound TSC-2 exhibited the best effect of scavenging DPPH radical, with the lowest EC50 (0.208 ± 0.004 mol/mol DPPH) as well as the highest bimolecular rate constant Kb (4218 M−1 s−1), which is 1.18-fold higher than that of Trolox. Meanwhile, TSC-2 also obtained the lowest EC50 (1.27 µmol of Trolox equiv/µmol) of scavenging peroxyl radical. Furthermore, the density functional theory (DFT) calculation was carried out to further explain the experimental results by calculating several molecular descriptors associated with radical scavenging activity. These theoretical data suggested that the electron-donating effect of the diethylamino group in TSC-2 leads to the enhancement of the scavenging activities and the studied compounds may prefer to undergo the hydrogen atom transfer process.

AbstractIntroductionThe gastrointestinal digestion of food proteins can generate peptides having a wide range of biological activities and possibly involved in many physiological processes. In this study, we screened various potential bioactivities generated by plant-based protein samples as compared to one animal-based protein after in vitro simulation of gastrointestinal digestion (SGID).Materials and methods1 protein samples: Whey protein (WhP) as an animal protein reference (tested twice, in each set), 3 grades of pea protein (PeaP1, PeaP2 and PeaP3) and an hydrolyzed pea protein (HPeaP), pea and wheat albumins (PeaA and WA), wheat protein (WP), potato, fava bean and oat proteins (PP, FBP and OP) were submitted to SGID.Undigested and digested protein samples were then tested in different in vitro, cellular or acellular models, including measures on : 1/energy homeostasis through their ability to promote satiety hormones (CCK and GLP-1) secretion by STC-1 cells, to inhibit DPP-IV activity and to interact with opioid receptors; 2/anti-hypertensive properties through their ability to inhibit ACE activity; 3/anti-inflammatory properties through their ability to decrease IL-8 secretion by Caco-2 cells submitted or not to LPS; 4/antioxidant properties through their ability to inhibit production of the 3 reactive oxygen species (ROS): O2.-, H2O2 and HO..ResultsThe SGID of the 11 protein samples led to bioactive peptides able to stimulate CCK and GLP-1 secretion by enteroendocrine cells in a dose-dependent manner, to inhibit in vitro DPP-IV and ACE activity and to bind opioid receptors. They were also able to decrease production of ROS. Anyway, no anti-inflammatory impact through inhibition of IL-8 secretion has been highlighted in this study but no pro-inflammatory impact was detected neither; even more, some protein samples lost their pro-inflammatory potential after digestion. The best candidates answering globally to the main activities explored were PeaP1, PeaP2, HPeaP, PP and FBP with some specificities.DiscussionThese protein samples could thus be potentially valorized in the future in the context of type 2 diabetes and related cardiovascular risk prevention, or for their antioxidant properties in the context of cardiovascular diseases or ageing. Moreover, those peptides could offer natural preventive alternatives to some drugs. This will need further exploration and in vivo validation.

Commelinaceae is used for ethnobotany. However, bioactive compounds information of this family is few data. The aim here was to determine the bioactive compounds and quantify the antioxidant activity from leaves 10 species.  Twenty amino acids were identified using LC/MS/MS. The antioxidant contents were evaluated by the total phenolic and total flavonoid content assays. The individual phenolic acids, flavonoids and vitamin c were identified by HPLC. The antioxidant activities detected were DPPH scavenging and FRAP assay. The total amino acids found in most samples studied ranging from 239 to 1012 µg/g DW. Vitamin C contents were in the range of 23 to 195 mg/100 g DW. Total phenolic and total flavonoid contents ranged from 11.3 to 35.7 mg GAE/g DW and 56.7 to 368.7 mg RE/100 g DW, respectively. All the species studied possessed strong antioxidant properties (DPPH and FRAP). This result can be applied for further development of functional foods or cosmetics.

: Food spoilage is one of the major elements of food insecurity that has acquired significant attention over recent decades due to global human population growth. Several studies have investigated increasing shelf life of food products using natural and environmentally friendly compounds. Whey protein (WP) can be an important additive material because it is well-known for its high value of nutrition and well characteristics for the formation of edible films. Furthermore, natural bioactive compounds have been incorporated with WP-based films to confer their antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. Herein, nanotechnology has been effectively potentiated the antimicrobial and antioxidant properties of WP films. A wide range of bioactive agents has been embedded in the WP films, such as essential oils (EOs), TiO2, nano-clay, and even lactic acid bacteria. The current paper reviews the antioxidant and antimicrobial effects of different types of WP films and their applications in food products. This study also discussed the impact of WP films on shelf life, chemical and microbiological quality indices of meats, processed meats, poultry meat products, and fish.
