Riesling, Chardonnay, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes can make magnificent wines but there are also many other excellent wine varieties that for many of us are rarely experienced. Vines for Wines will expand the wine lover’s knowledge and appreciation of a great range of wines and help to explore their individual preferences for specific varieties, blends, flavours and styles. This book is based on the highly successful Wine Grape Varieties, which is an aid to identifying grape vines. Vines for Wines, however, focuses on wines from the average consumer’s point-of-view, introducing the different wine grape varieties and the wines made from them, including blends. Each variety is represented by a colour photograph of the grape variety, its current world plantings, wine produced and notes describing the varietal characters for each wine grape variety. The tasting terms and wine notes for each variety provide a benchmark for the consumer to assess the quality of wines they drink, and to allow them to share and compare their experiences confidently with other wine lovers.

The chapter represents the challenges of creating a new wine brand in Croatia based upon an autochthonous wine grape variety Malvazija Istarska. As a product, the wine has a long tradition of winegrowing and strong historical background. With novel technologies which create high quality wines with numerous positive attributes and current presence on national and international markets, there is strong evidence that branding could be the next step. The demand for Malvazija Istarska exists and consumers are aware of the attributes and quality. From the producer's point of view Malvazija Istarska should maintain its quality and positive image and geographic origin which warranties uniqueness. The brand should be distinctive from other similar products with distinctive and protected package and bottle design and size.

This study evaluated the effects of various bud load and water amounts (WA) on the berry composition of the ‘Narince’ white wine grape variety. Two water amounts (WA-I and WA-II) administered during growth stages or a non-irrigated (rainfed) control treatment were paired with two different bud loads (K (normal) and 2K (two-fold buds) to assess their effects onsugar, organic acid and phenolic compound contents, as well as antioxidant capacity of the berries for a white wine grape variety ‘Narince’. Despite a slight decrease observed only in sugars in the second year, increases in all phenolic compounds examined (especially in catechin and epicatechin) were detected in the WA-I application. The total phenolic compound values obtained for 2K in the same application was also high. The antioxidant capacity values were not significantly affected by theirrigation or bud load applications. Therefore, a 2K bud load with WA-I treatments in which 50% and 75% of the cumulative evaporation from the Class A pan during berry set to veraison and veraison to ripening, respectively, are recommended for irrigation in high plateau viticulture. By maintaining or increasing the fruit composition of ‘Narince’ grapes, these treatments can optimize grape yield and the earnings of growers. In all applications, glucose (among the sugars), tartaric acid (among theorganic acids), and catechin and epicatechin (among the phenolic compounds) were higher than their counterparts.

This work presents the three-year results of the effects of mineral and different types of organic fertilizers on the elements of the yield (the relative coefficient of fertility, the absolute coefficient of fertility, cluster weight and the yield of grapes per area unit) of the Vranac variety of grape. The research was carried out in Podgorica vineyard, at the location Ljeskopolje. Eight different variants of nutrition were applied: (1) control (without fertilization); (2) NPK (8:16:24) - 500 kg/ha; (3) cow manure - 20 t/ha; (4) poultry manure - 10 t/ha; (5) peat - 10 t/ha; (6) cow manure + poultry manure - 10 + 5 t/ha; (7) cow manure + peat - 10 + 5 t/ha; (8) poultry manure + peat - 5 + 5 t/ha. All the variants of nutrition were tested under irrigated and non-irrigated conditions. The results showed that the relative coefficient of fertility in all the tested variants of nutrition had high values. Regarding the number of inflorescences per productive shoot in a three-year average, a particularly good variant was the cow manure and the variant with the combination of poultry manure and peat. The application of mineral and different types of organic fertilizers had a positive effect on the average cluster weight. The variant with the combination of poultry manure and peat gave the highest average cluster weight in the three-year average. All the tested variants of nutrition in the three-year average had a higher yield than the variant without fertilization. The variant with cow manure had the highest yield of grapes. Irrigation had a positive effect on all the tested indicators of the yield.

Selection breeders of the Institute Magarach have created a new wine grape variety with a colored berry and anthocyane pulp color, different from the example variety ‘Antei magarachskiy’ in high yielding capacity, colored juice, resistance to biotic and abiotic stress factors of biosphere. The quality form, isolated as a new grape variety, was separated from the population of seedlings of a crossing combination ‘Tsitronnyi Magaracha’ × ‘Nerkarat’ in 1996 during comprehensive study of populations of wine forms of grapes with colored juice. The article presents main ampelographic, biological and economical parameters peculiar for new promising variety: medium-late ripening date (10.09), production period - 151 days. The recommended form of bush is a cordon on a medium trunk. Loading is 6 eyes on a cane (4 canes). Planting scheme is 3 x 1.5 m. Preventive treatment against fungal diseases is provided 3-4 times a season. The content of sugars in technologically mature berries is 22.4 g / 100 cm3, of titratable acids - 8.7 g / dm3. Mass concentration of phenolic substances in total is 367.0 g / dm3. The crop yield is recommended for dry and liqueur wine production. Tasting assessment of young base wines: dry - 7.75 points, liqueur - 7.82 (according to 8-point scale).
