Influenza is a common disease caused by influenza virus infections. There are an estimated 3 to 5 million annual cases of severe illness and 290 000 to 650 000 respiratory deaths caused by influenza virus infections worldwide (1). Transmission can occur in three ways: direct contact with an infected person, through fomites, or by inhaling aerosolized infectious particles (2). Systemic manifestations of uncomplicated influenza include fever, fatigue, and headaches, and symptoms of upper respiratory tract infection including sore throat, nasal discharge, and non-productive cough (3). Although antiviral drugs are available to treat influenza, vaccination remains the best way to prevent infection. This article will provide an overview of influenza virus biology, as well as current methods and those in development to treat and prevent influenza.

Ulcerative colitis is chronic inflammatory bowel condition which is increasing in prevalence in modern era particularly in age group of 20 to 40years. The exact cause of this disease is unknown yet. Symptoms of UC are altered bowel habits, increased frequency of defecation, bleeding per rectum, mucus mixed stool and tenesmus etc. Associated symptoms are weight loss, weakness, fatigue etc. On the basis of these features UC can be compared with Rakta atisaar. UC is disease of nature with in between symptom free periods. In con-temporary science there is no curative treatment for UC. Symptomatic relief is provided with steroidal drugs and drugs like salphasalazine. So, this is need of hour that a protocol should be designed to provide relief to patient suffering from this disease. Present case study focuses on holistic approach towards entity under con-sideration rather than single formulation of therapy as the disease deteriorates physical and mental wellbeing of patient. A three months of treatment with proper lifestyle led to complete relief in symptoms. Keywords: Ulcerative colitis, Rakta atisaar, inflammatory bowel disease

Background- Spastic Quadriplegia also known as spastic tetraplegia is a subset of Spastic cerebral palsy that af- fects all four limbs (both arms and legs). Spastic quadriplegia usually displays equal involvement of both upper and lower extremities with severe involvement of legs, arms and floppiness of neck. Spastic quadriplegia is gen- erally caused by brain damage either before birth, during or shortly after. In Ayurveda quadriplegia can be corre- lated with Sarvangghat which is a vatavyadhi. It is a nanatmaja vatavyadhi according to charaka. As the disease was caused by vata-kapha dosha. The treatment is mainly aimed at mitigating vata kapha dosha which helps to clear the blocked micro-channels involved in the pathology. Aim and objective- To study the effect of Vatkulan- taka rasa and Shashtika shali pinda sweda in the management of Spastic quadriplegia (Sarvangghat). Material and methods-The present case study is upon 16 years old (male patient) diagnosed case of spastic quadriplegia with complaints of difficulty in walking with stiffness for 6 years at the kayachikitsa IPD of Pt. khushilal Sharma govt. ayurvedic hospital Bhopal. He was treated with shashtika shali pind sweda & Vatkulantaka rasa. The dura- tion of the study is 21 days. The assessment was done on the basis of symptomatic relief after treatment. Observation- The Ayurvedic therapy and oral medication yielded complete symptomatic relief from pain, stiffness and improve quality of life. Conclusion- On the basis of the result obtained, it can be concluded that Shashtika shali pinda sweda and Vatku- lantaka rasa can be used as an effective treatment in the management of Spastic quadriplegia (Sarvangghat). Keywords: Sarvangghat, Spastic quadriplegia, Shashtika shali pinda sweda, Vatkulantaka rasa.

Ayurveda described various skin diseases under the single heading Kushta. In Charaka Samhita, Acharya Charaka explained Ashtadasha Kushtas in two main categories namely ‘Maha Kushta’ and ‘Kshudra Kushta’. Kushta is tridoshaja vyadi, however, the symptoms appear according to the dosha predominance. Vipadika is one of the Kshudra Kushta with predominance of vata kapha doshas and it is charactrised by Pani Pada sputana (fissures in palms and soles) and Teevra vedana (severe pain). According to clinical manifestations, Vipadika is more similar to ‘Planto Palmar Psoriasis’ which is long lasting Auto Immune disease. It is found to be 3-4% of all Psoriasis cases. In modern science, many treatment modalities are available to treat the disease. They may cause many side effects and recurrence after subside is also very common which gave a big scope to alternative system of medicines to treat Vipadika. In the present case study, the line of management followed was mentioned by Acharya Charaka, according to dosha Predominance. The patient, initially administered sneha pana with Maha Tiktaka gritha for 7 days which was beneficial to pacify pitta dosha and kapha dosha utkleshana before Vamana. Later on, Vamana therapy was conducted to eliminate kapha dosha which gave good symptomatic relief to the patient. However, in view of the severity, chronicity and recurrence of the disease, Mridu Lavana jala Avagaha Sweda followed by Padhabyanga with pinda taila was also performed which resulted in excellent improvement in very short period of time.

Seventy subjects suffering from the common cold were recruited at general practitioner surgeries and were treated with an evening dose of a syrup† containing 600 mg paracetamol, 15 mg dextromethorphan hydrobromide, 8 mg ephedrine sulphate, 7.5 mg doxylamine succinate per 30 ml or an identical-appearing and flavoured control syrup without the active ingredients, in a double-blind crossover design study, lasting two days. Subjects were randomly allotted to two equal groups. One group took active formulation the first evening followed by the control formulation the second evening. The second group took the two formulations in the reverse order. Evaluation of symptomatic relief on a 6-point rating scale against eight major cold symptoms was carried out by each subject at 10 a.m. following the administration of active or control formulation the previous evening. Following combination of data for the two groups, results showed a significant degree of relief provided by the active formulation compared to control for the following symptoms, cough, nasal congestion, nasal discharge, sneezing, generally feeling unwell, headache, sore throat, disturbed sleep, the difference between the two preparations in relief of cough being highly significantly in favour of the “active” preparation. Additionally, a highly significant number of the subjects expressed a preference for the global symptomatic relief provided by the active formulation as compared to control. These results have demonstrated that the “active” formulation provides effective therapy for night-time symptomatic relief of the eight major symptoms of the common cold.

Background- Vataja Pratishyaya is a Nasagataroga and one among five types of Pratishyaya. It is most common and annoying nasal problem which affect the people of all age group. Vataja Pratishaya is a disease which possesses symptoms like Nasagata Tanusrava, Kshavathu and Nasaavarodha. These symptoms are also found in allergic rhinitis which is induced by an IgE mediated inflammation of the nasal mucosa. While treating the Pratishyaya, special attention should be given to the stages of the disease because the treatment approach of Amavastha, Pakwavastha and Dushta stages are entirely different. Nasya is the most important Shodhana method in Urdhwgatrugata Vyadhies and can execute Uttamanga Shuddhi, Snehana, and Swedana. The continuous sneezing is a main disturbing symptom of allergic rhinitis. Shunthyadi Taila was selected for this purpose which is given in Kshavathu Adhikara for managing the allergic conditions of the nose. Method – The patient with Vataja Pratishyaya was given two courses of Shunthyadi Taila Nasya, each course consisting of one sitting per day for 7 days. Six drops of Shunthyadi Taila were poured into each nostril during each session. Result- Patients clinical status was assessed on 7th, 15th, 21st and 28th day. Remission of symptoms like sneezing, rhinorrhoea, itching, nasal congestion etc. was observed after 2 courses of treatment. Patient was followed up for 1 month and no recurrences of symptoms were observed. Key words: Vataja Pratishyaya, allergic rhinitis, Shunthyadi Taila.

Abstract: Allergic rhinitis (AR) is a nasal inflammation caused by IgE-mediated reacions after inhaled the allergens. It’s characterized as symptoms of sneezing, airflow obstruction, nasal pruritus, and often clear nasal discharge. The prevalence of AR is about 5-40% in the general population and still rising. Multiple non-instrumental tests for AR were reported though few were validated. Score for Allergic Rhinitis (SFAR) is a valid instrument to screening AR. The purpose of this study was to perform adaptation and cultural translation and validation of the SFAR questionnaire for the Indonesian language. This was a cross sectional study to assess the validity and reliability of the Indonesian modification of Score for Allergic Rhinitis. The study conduct in 59 subjects. The Indonesian modification of SFAR instrument is valid and reliable as an instrument for screening AR with r values ranging from 0.345 to 0.730. Internal consistency shows that Cronbach's alpha is 0.803. The validation and reliability test of Indonesian modification of Score for Allergic Rhinitis was performed and valid and reliable as an instrument for assessing allergic rhinitis. Keywords: Allergic Rhinitis, Score for Allergic Rhinitis, Validity, Indonesian Version.

Twin studies have mostly focused on the pattern of maladaptive behaviour manifested by the twins and their biological basis but the findings have remained controversial till date. The present case study explores the psychopathology in 14 year old twins of Indian origin. They were referred for psychometric assessment and psychotherapy for their conduct problems. The tools administered on them during psychometric assessment are Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children IV (WISC-IV), Rorschach Inkblot Test (RIBT) and Thematic Apperception Test (TAT). Findings are discussed in terms of the personality processes and relationship quality of the twins.

In the last decades, geophysical methods such as magnetic survey have become a common technique for prospecting archaeological sites. At sub-Saharan archaeological sites, however, magnetic survey and correlated techniques never came into broad use and there are no signs for an immediate change of this situation. This paper examines the magnetic survey undertaken on the Nigerian site of Zilum, a settlement of the Gajiganna Culture (ca 1800-400 BC) located in the Chad Basin and dated to ca 600-400 BC. By means of the present case study, we demonstrate the significance of this particular type of investigation in yielding complementary data for understanding the character of prehistoric settlements. In conclusion, we point out that geophysical methods should play a more important role in modern archaeological field research, as they furnish a class of documentation not achievable by traditional survey and excavation methods, thus creating new perspectives for interpreting the past of African societies.
