Ayurveda is the science of life. The main aim of Ayurveda is to maintain the health of a healthy person and to cure the diseased person. For the maintenance of the health of a healthy person, rasayan chikitsa is advised in Ayurve- da. Rasayan chikitsa is the separate branch of Ayurveda, which deals with various aspects of preventive health care. In today’s modern era, the incidence of lifestyle disorders like hypertension, obesity, diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular diseases increased, because of altered dietary and living patterns. Oxidative stress may be respon- sible for most of the diseases. Lack of dietary antioxidants supplements and generation of free radicals induces disease associated with oxidative stress. Oxidative stress is essentially an imbalance between the production of free radicals and the ability of the body to counteract or detoxify their harmful effects through neutralization by antioxidants. Free radicals contain unpaired electrons, and they are unstable and highly reactive. They donate or accept an electron from other molecules, therefore behaving as oxidants. An antioxidant is a stable molecule, enough to donate an electron to rampaging free radical and neutralize it, thus reducing its capacity to damage. Ac-cording to Ayurveda, Amalaki is the best rasayan, tridoshhar. As per modern science, it contains the largest amount of vitamin C (6oomg), and vitamin C has the best antioxidant property. Amalaki rasayan plays an im- portant role as an antioxidant and thus relives oxidative stress, thus helpful in the prevention of many diseases. Keywords: Rasayan, antioxidant, free radicals, Amalaki

In the recent years, there has been a great deal of attention in investigating the disease preventive properties of functional foods. Particularly, impact of the antioxidant property of functional foods in reducing the risk or progression of chronic diseases has gained considerable interest amongst researchers and practitioners. Free radicals such as reactive oxygen species are generated in the body by exposure to a number of physiochemical or pathological mechanisms. It is imperative to preserve a balance between the levels of free radicals and antioxidants for routine physiological function, a disparity of which would accelerate oxidative stress. Increased oxidative stress and associated consequences in metabolic disorders such as obesity, cardiovascular diseases and diabetes has warranted the need for exogenous antioxidant concentrates derived from natural foods to alleviate the adverse effects. This chapter provides an overview on the efficacy of functional foods in reducing free radical-mediated damage in metabolic syndrome.

Abstract: Chronic inflammation contributes to the occurrence of various metabolic diseases and even cancer. Chronic inflammation results from excessive response of free radicals. Free radicals are triggered by various agents and oxidation processes in the body as Reactive Oxygen Stress (ROS). The high level of free radicals (oxidants), without adequate intake of antioxidants will lead to oxidative stress conditions. Oxidative stress triggers persistent of inflammation. The formation of ROS is difficult to avoid because it can be generated from cellular metabolic processes. Mata berpotensi mengalami kerusakan yang cukup tinggi karena rentan terhadap paparan radikal bebas. Radikal bebas dapat berasal dari proses metabolik tubuh dan faktor lingkungan yang dapat menginisiasi stres oksidatif. Stres oksidatif dapat menyebabkan terjadinya keruskan DNA, peroksidase lipid dan protein yang dapat mengakibatkan peradangan kronis dan disfungsi pada jaringan mata. Kerusakan pada jaringan mata yang disebabkan oleh stres oksidatif dapat diatasi dengan antioksidan, yang mana antioksidan alami dapat ditemukan dalam sayur-sayuran, buah-buahan, dan rempah. Cengkeh merupakan salah satu tanaman rempah di Indonesia yang bagian tunas, tangkai bunga dan daunnya dapat dimanfaatkan. Kandungan tinggi antioksidan pada cengkeh yaitu eugenol, flavonoid, asam hidroksibenzoat, asam hidroksisinamat serta vitamin C dan E. Antioksidan berperan dalam menghambat pembentukan katarak, melindungi mata dari bahaya kerusakan dan masalah penglihatan melalui pengikatan radikal bebas yang sangat reaktif sehingga dapat menghambat reaksi oksidasi. Tujuan literatur review untuk mengetahui potensi cengkeh sebagai pencegah kerusakan mata akibat stress oksidatif pada manusia. Menggunakan artikel penelitian yang didapat melalui proses literature searching dan buku terkait potensi cengkeh sebagai pencegah kerusakan mata akibat stres oksidatif dari tahun 2004 sampai dengan tahun 2019 dengan jumlah artikel sebanyak 23 artikel. Berbagai penelitian eksperimental yang dilakukan menunjukkan bahwa cengkeh bermanfaat sebagai pencegah kerusakan mata akibat stres oksidatif. Kata kunci: antioksidan, cengkeh, stres oksidatif  POTENTIAL OF CLOVES TO PREVENT VISUAL DAMAGE DUE TO OXIDATIVE STRESS                                                                                         ABSTRACT There is a high risk of visual damage due to free radical exposure. Free Radicals from Metabolic byproduct and other environmental factors could potentially initiate oxidative stress. Oxidative stress would cause damage towards DNA, lipid peroxidase and proteins which would cause chronic inflammation and dysfunction in eye tissues. Visual damage due to oxidative stress could be resolved using natural antioxidants found in vegetables, fruits and spices. Cloves (Syzygium aromaticum) are one of the most versatile spices in Indonesia, where the bud, the stem and the leaf could be used. Large levels of antioxidants such as eugenol, flavonoids, hydroxybenzoate acids, hydroxycinnamic acids as well as vitamin C and E are found in cloves. Antioxidants have a preventive role in cataract development, as well as protecting the eye from degeneration and visual acuity difficulties through binding with profoundly reactive free radicals, decreasing the pace of oxidation. The purpose of this review literature is to determine the potential of cloves to prevent visual damage due to oxidative stressin humans. Using research articles obtained through the process of searching literature and books related tothe potential of cloves to prevent visual damage due to oxidative stress from 2004 to 2019 with 23 articles. Various experimental studies conducted showed that cloves are useful to prevent visual damage due to oxidative stress in humans.  Keyword : antioxidants, cloves, oxidative stress

Background: Plasma gets exposed to the gases present in the smoke of the cigarette which leads to peroxidation. The ascorbic acid present in the body gets oxidized there is danger of derangement of lipid profile. The measure of malondialdehyde which is formed in lipid peroxidation reaction is indicative of oxidative stress. Oxidative stress seen among the smokers has been attributed to high MDA levels. Objective was to study the effect of smoking on vitamin C and MDA.Methods: Present study was cross sectional study. Two groups of subjects were compared. Out of 100 study subjects, 25 were non smokers and were kept in one group. Remaining 75 were smokers. These two groups were compared to find out how the smoking habit affects the MDA as well as vitamin C levels among them.Results: The levels of MDA were more in smokers compared to those who did not smoke and this difference was significant. The levels of vitamin C were less in smokers compared to those who did not smoke and this difference was significant (p<0.05). It was found that the MDA levels were significantly more among all degrees of smokers. It was less in smokers with mild degree compared to smokers with heavy or moderate degree. Level of vitamin C was more in non smokers compared to smokers. Mild degree of smokers had better levels of vitamin C compared to moderate degree of smokers.Conclusions: Smoking affects the vitamin C levels and MDA levels in the human body.

Background: Cigarette smoke free radicals can cause cellular damage and different diseases. All the body fluids have antioxidants which protect against free radicals. Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate salivary total antioxidant capacity and peroxidase, uric acid and malondialdehyde levels in smokers and a nonsmoking control group. Methods: Unstimulated saliva was collected from 510 males. A total of 259 subjects were current smokers and 251 were non-smokers. The levels of salivary total antioxidant capacity, uric acid, peroxidase and malondialdehyde were measured using standard procedures. Data were analyzed with t test and ANOVA. Results: The smokers were younger and dental hygiene index was higher than healthy nonsmoking controls. The mean total antioxidant capacity in smokers and nonsmokers was 0.13±0.07 and 0.21±011, respectively (P=0.001). Smokers had significantly lower peroxidase and uric acid levels than healthy controls. In addition, the mean malondialdehyde levels in the smokers and nonsmokers were 4.55 ±2.61 and 2.79 ±2.21, respectively (P=0.001). Conclusion: Cigarette smoke produces free radical and oxidative stress, causing many side effects. Salivary antioxidant levels decreased and malondialdehyde levels increased in smokers, indicating the high oxidative stress among smokers compared to nonsmokers. Cigarette smoke had deleterious effects on main salivary antioxidants levels.

Background: Ageing is characterized by a gradual decline in body functions and decreased ability to maintain homeostasis. The free radical theory of ageing proposed by Harman D states that ageing is a result of cumulative damage incurred by free radical reactions. Free radicals are highly reactive molecular species with unpaired electrons; generated in the body by several physiological processes. Prime target to free radical attack are the polyunsaturated fatty acids of cell membranes causing lipid peroxidation. The free radicals are neutralized by the exogenous and endogenous antioxidant systems. Oxidative stress occurs when large number of free radicals are produced or the antioxidant activity is impaired. The present study is focused to find out the role of oxidative stress in ageing.Methods: A cross sectional observational study was undertaken to assess the oxidative stress in ageing; by determining the levels of lipid peroxidation product- malondialdehyde (MDA), the antioxidants- superoxide dismutase (SOD) and ceruloplasmin in various age groups. 150 healthy subjects were selected randomly and categorised into three different age groups of 20-30 years, 40-59 years and 60-90 years; with 50 subjects in each group. Results were expressed as mean ± standard deviation.Results: a significant elevation in serum MDA level and a decline in SOD were observed in 40-59 years and 60-90 years age groups. However, an elevated ceruloplasmin level was found in the above age groups.Conclusions: Aforementioned observations are suggestive of an association between oxidative stress and the progression of ageing process.

Vitamin C is one of the nutrients that act as antioxidants and effectively overcome free radicals that can damage cells or tissues, including protecting the lens from oxidative damage caused by radiation. Vitamin C is widely found in fruits, and vegetables, one of them in chili. Vitamin C in chili has a function as a good antioxidant for the body (able to increase the immune system absorbed by calcium in the body. This study aims to determine the levels of vitamin C contained in some types of chili using UV-Vis spectrophotometry method and conduct a preliminary test. The highest levels of vitamin C obtained by using spectrophotometric method at 200 nm wavelength were on red curly pepper (50 g/100 g) and followed by chili jablay orange-red (38 g/100 g), green cayenne (29 g/100 g), red pepper large (22 g/100 g), and large green chili (9 g/100 g). While based on preliminary test it was found that all chilies contain saponins, as well as only large red pepper (sample 1) and red curly pepper (sample 4) containing flavonoids Keywords: capsicum, chilly, spectrophotometry

Lead is a highly toxic agent and a potent risk factor for various diseases as its quantity in an environment is increasing day by day. Aim: To observe and analyze the lead nitrate induced histomorphological changes in the liver of Sprague Dawley rats. Study Design: Experimental Study. Methodology: Animals of group A (control) were fed on normal diet but the animals of group B were given 50mg/kg of lead nitrate dissolved in 10ml of distilled water through oral gavage for 14 days daily. SPSS version 22 was used for data analysis. All the quantitative data was expressed as means ± SD. One Way ANOVA followed by Post Hoc Tukey test was applied. Results: Degenerative effects were noted. The number of Inflammatory and Kupfffer cells is increased with decreased in the body weight. Steatosis and central vein congestion were also present. Conclusion: It was concluded that degenerative effects histologically may be due to oxidative stress produced by formation of free radicals and denaturation of proteins by lead nitrate. Background Vitiligo is a well-recognized pigmentary disorder of the skin and /or mucous membrane characterized by circumscribed ivory or chalky white macules devoid of identifiable melanocytes. The pathogenesis of vitiligo is complex and still not well understood. According to autocytotoxic hypothesis, oxidative stress has been suggested to be the initial pathogenic event in melanocyte degeneration. The role of free radicals and oxidative damage in the pathophysiology of vitiligo has been documented in recent studies.Objective To evaluate the role of oxidative stress in patients with vitiligo and of healthy controls by measuring levels of the oxidant malondialdehyde (MDA) and antioxidants vitamin C and vitamin E in serum and catalase (CAT) in erythrocytes.Method A total of 80 clinically diagnosed cases of vitiligo and 80 control subjects were included in the study to assess the activity of MDA, vitamin C and vitamin E in serum and CAT in erythrocytes of patients and controls by using the spectrophotometric assay.Result There was statistically significant increase in the levels of MDA in patients with vitiligo compared to the control group (p<0.001). No significant difference was found in the levels of vitamin C (p=0.411) and vitamin E (p=0.771) between the patients with vitiligo and control group. The levels of CAT in the vitiligo patients were found to be significantly lower than those of controls (p<0.001).Conclusion Increased oxidative stress and decreased catalase have been observed in vitiligo patients and the data suggesting that the free radicals may be involved in the destruction of melanocytes or dysregulation of melanogenesis.Kathmandu University Medical Journal Vol.12(2) 2014: 132-136
