Ayurveda is the science which mentioned various principles for prevention and treatment of disease. ‘Prevention is better than cure’ is the basic concept of Ayurveda. It is a science of life and a great heritage of India. Ayurveda provides various treatment modalities and principles for maintaining proper health. In Ayurveda various concepts are described which are unique in sense as well as having its meaningful knowledge. Among them concept of Strotas and Agni also are very important. Agni has bio-transformative activity in the body which maintain Swasthya. Dosha Samyata and Vishamata are depends upon the Agni. The internal transport system of the body is represented by strotas and has been given a place of fundamental importance in Ayurveda for health and disease. There are 13 types of Strotas according to Acharya Charaka and 11 types according to Sushruta. In any Vikara utpatti, there is vitiation of Dosha, Dhatu, Mala and also Strotas. Rasavaha strotas is the strotas that does the circulation of Dosha, Dhatu, Anna, Jala. Rasavaha Strotas dushti leads to Vikara formation includes Pandu. In Ayurveda, AcharyaCharaka in his classical treaties, under the heading ‘Pandu’ as mentioned a group of symptoms which very closely resembles with the signs and symptoms of Anaemia according to modern medicine. Keywords: Strotas, Agni, Rasavaha strotodushti Hetu, Panduroga.

The internal transport system of the body, represented by Srotamsi has been given a place of fundamental importance in Ayurveda both health and disease. Srotas are described as channels through which oozing of the fluids takes place. There are 13 srotas as described by Acharya Charak and 11 pairs as per Acharya Sushruta. Both have described the Medovaha Srotas and the vitiation of which leads to diseases of which Sthaulyata (Obesity) is one. According to Acharya Sushruta, the concept of Prakriti (body constitution) of an individual is derived by the predominance of Doshas at the time of fertilization. The entire health of an individual depends upon the Prakriti and health of a person is being affected according to it. The present study is being done to find out the basic concept of medovaha srotas described in Ayurveda whose vitiation is the cause of medovriddhi (overweight and obesity) and its relation with the prakriti. It was a clinical study conducted on total 150 cases in State Ayurvedic College and Hospital, Lucknow. The main tools used to conduct this study were the B.M.I criteria recommended by W.H.O and proforma of Prakriti Parishan. The vitiation of medovaha srotas affects all the prakriti person almost in same manner i.e., fat accumulate beneath the skinfold and thyroid hormones level has relation with overweight and obesity. However the number of kaphaja prakriti persons showed that these are more prone to develop Obesity/overweight as a result of Medovaha srotodusthi.

Ayurveda is an age old system of medicine which utilizes thousands of medicinal plants, rich in secondary metabolites for their therapeutic benefits and phenolic compounds are important one. Plant phenolic compounds are one of the major group of phytomolecules having tremendous therapeutic and nutraceutical potential. Indian medicinal plants like Emblica, Terminalia spp., Withania, Tinospora etc. are some of the potential source of bioactive phenolics and had been used from ages in various Ayurvedic formulations and were scientifically validated too. In this contribution, a brief account of some common Indian medicinal plants rich in bioactive phenolics are summarized along with their therapeutic action on human health and disease. The vast array of phenolics in these plants makes them a suitable candidate for modern medicine, nutraceutical supplements, immuno-modulatory formulations etc. With the advent of modern separation tools and techniques, it is now possible to identify, isolate and purify desired phytoconstituents from plant extracts. This further opens the avenues of utilizing medicinal plants or plant constituents/metabolites as super food for strengthening the body and maintaining the healthy work-life balance. The need of the hour is to identify therapeutically potential phenolics rich plants and development of herbal formulations for human welfare.

Psoriasis is a visible skin condition of chronic origin substantially affecting the physical as well as psychological life of the person thus affecting the quality of life. To combat the same, modern medicine comes with varieties of treatment options but none of them fully cure neither give very promising results to improve quality of life. In Ayurveda, Psoriasis shares the correlation with Ekakushtha. The aim of this study is to evaluate the role of Ayurveda treatment modalities in Ekakushtha. A male patient aged 27 years presented with the signs and symptoms as well-defined, slightly raised silvery scales all over the body, mainly presented on flexors surfaces of bilateral legs, hands and over the trunk region along with severe dryness of whole body, powdery discharge with severe itching, diagnosed as Ekakushtha (chronic psoriasis) and was treated with both external and internal medications, which included Vaman Therapy (purificatory emesis) and Shamana (palliative treatment). Shodhana was given as Samyak Snehan (proper oleation) followed by Vamana Karma (therapeutic emesis), in which vitiated Doshas are expelled out through Urdhvamarga (through mouth) and Shamana was given by classical Ayurvedic medications. At the end of Vamana, Pittantik Vamana was achieved. Patient felt notable reduction from erythema, Kandu (itching) and scaling during treatment. This case study showed Vaman karma followed by palliative treatment to be a better treatment option which gives significant improvement in Psoriasis.

Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is a sleep associated breathing disorder and it affects the health and quality of life of individuals suffering from it. Orthodontists should be well aware of the symptoms of this disorder and competent enough to recognize its signs and symptoms. Orthodontics is well suited for the treatment of OSA patients due to their expertise and knowledge regarding growth and development of orofacial and dentofacial structures as well as orthopaedic, orthodontic, and surgical correction of the jaws and other supporting tissues. There are basically two types of sleep apnoea- Central sleep apnoea and obstructive sleep apnoea where obstructive sleep apnoea is the more common one. This disorder can be life threatening as the oxygen supply to various parts of the body is substantially reduced. Obstructive sleep apnoea is caused by an interplay between a variety of factors, including sleep related loss of muscle tone in the tissues supplied by the glossopharyngeal nerve, anatomical obstruction of the nasal passages, large tonsils, large tongue, a retrognathic mandible, obesity, alcohol, sedative medication, and allergies. Sleep apnoea can be caused due to many factors and many treatment modalities have been employed to correct this disorder including mandibular advancement appliances, polysomnographs, and surgical intervention. It can be treated using surgery, continuous positive airway pressure and oral appliances therapy. This article highlights the role the orthodontist plays in the diagnosis and treatment planning of OSA patients. KEY WORDS Orthodontics, Obstructive Sleep Apnoea, Sleep, Snoring

Autoimmune diseases are collectively addressed as chronic conditions initiated by the loss of one’s immunological tolerance, where the body treats its own cells as foreigners or self-antigens. These hay-wired antibodies or immunologically capable cells lead to a variety of disorders like rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, multiple sclerosis and recently included neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s, Parkinsonism and testicular cancer triggered T-cells induced autoimmune response in testes and brain. Conventional treatments for autoimmune diseases possess several downsides due to unfavourable pharmacokinetic behaviour of drug, reflected by low bioavailability, rapid clearance, offsite toxicity, restricted targeting ability and poor therapeutic outcomes. Novel nanovesicular drug delivery systems including liposomes, niosomes, proniosomes, ethosomes, transferosomes, pharmacosomes, ufasomes and biologically originated exosomes have proved to possess alluring prospects in supporting the combat against autoimmune diseases. These nanovesicles have revitalized available treatment modalities as they are biocompatible, biodegradable, less immunogenic and capable of carrying high drug payloads to deliver both hydrophilic as well as lipophilic drugs to specific sites via passive or active targeting. Due to their unique surface chemistry, they can be decorated with physiological or synthetic ligands to target specific receptors overexpressed in different autoimmune diseases and can even cross the blood-brain barrier. This review presents exhaustive yet concise information on the potential of various nanovesicular systems as drug carriers in improving the overall therapeutic efficiency of the dosage regimen for various autoimmune diseases. The role of endogenous exosomes as biomarkers in the diagnosis and prognosis of autoimmune diseases along with monitoring progress of treatment will also be highlighted.

The use of Antiretroviral drugs in treating HIV/ AIDS patients has enormously increased their life spans with serious disadvantages. The virus infection still remains a public health problem worldwide with no cure and vaccine for the viral agent until now. The use of nanoparticles (NPs) for the treatment and prevention of HIV/AIDS is an emerging technology of the 21st century. NPs are solid and colloid particles with 10 nm to <1000 nm size range; although, less than 200 nm is the recommended size for nanomedical usage. There are NPs with therapeutic capabilities such as liposomes, micelles, dendrimers and nanocapsules. The particle enters the body mainly via oral intake, direct injection and inhalation. It has been proven to have potentials of advancing the prevention and treatment of the viral agent. Certain NPs have been shown to have selftherapeutic activity for the virus in vitro. Strategies that are novel are emerging which can be used to improve nanotechnology, such as genetic treatment and immunotherapy. In this review, nanoparticles, the types and its characteristics in drug delivery were discussed. The light was furthermore shed on its implications in the prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS.

Difficulty in breathing or shortness of breath may be simply termed as Shwasa (Asthma), As per Ayurveda, Shwasa is mainly caused by the Vata and Kapha Doshas. Shwasa is broadly classified into five types in Maha Shwasa (Dyspnoea major), Urdhawa Shwasa (Expiratory Dyspnoea), Chinna Shwasa (Chyne-stroke respiration), Kshudra Shwasa (Dyspnoea minor), Tamaka Shwasa (Bronchial Asthma). In modern science Tamaka Shwasa can be correlated with Asthma, Asthma which is a chronic inflammatory disease of airway. In modern medicine there is no cure for Asthma, symptoms can typically be improved. In Ayurveda, Asthma can be effectively and safely manage the condition without inducing any drug dependency where Pachakarma procedures and use of internal medication detoxifies the body, provides nutrition and increases the elasticity of lung tissue it also develops natural immunity of the body thus decreasing episodic recurrence of the disease.

The unique position of man as a master mechanic of the animal kingdom is because of skilled movements of his hands and when this shoulder joints get obstructed, we call it as Apabahuka (Frozen shoulder), we do not find satisfactory management in modern medical science. Various effective treatment modalities have been mentioned which reverse the pathogenesis, Shodhana is advised initially followed by Shamana therapies. In the present study 30 patients were selected incidentally and placed randomly into two groups A and B, with 15 subjects in each group. Group A received Amapachana with Panchakola Churna, Jambeera Pinda Sweda and Nasya Karma. Group B received Amapachana with Panchakola Churna, Jambeera pinda Sweda and Nasaapana. In both the groups two months follow up was done. Both groups showed significant improvement in the signs and symptoms of Apabahuka as well as the activities of daily livings, thereby improving the quality of life of the patients. Nasya Karma and Nasaapana provided highly significant results in all the symptoms of Apabahuka. In the present study as per the clinical data, Nasaapana is found to be more effective than Nasya Karma.
