Humans are progressively achieving new heights in the development of science and technology but at the same time it is difficult to follow the ways of healthy living as a consequence of which people are getting prone to many diseases. Among them “Anemia” is a very common disease, seen especially in developing countries like India. It reduces the work capacity of individuals and brings serious economic consequences and obstacles to the National Development. In this study, an effort has been put upon to explore the hidden potential laid in Ayurveda. So, in this research work, a comparative study was conducted between a herbo-mineral compound – Dhatri Lauha with a controlled group known drug. In the present study, total 30 patients were registered and randomly divided into two groups. Group A: 15 patients were included in this group and were given Dhatri Lauha 500mg BD oral- ly. Group B: 15 patients were included in this group and were given dried Ferrous Sulphate 150mg OD orally. The patients were assessed on subjective and hematological parameters for obtaining the effect of the drugs. Both the groups yielded highly significant results in subjective parameters. Again, highly significant and significant relief was seen in Nausea and constipation respectively in Group A whereas Group B showed insignificant results regarding nausea and constipation. The study Overall comparison of the therapy showed that the results were found better with high percentage relief in the patients under Trial Group i.e. Dhatri Lauha in comparison to the Control Group. The study concluded that the selected management has potential effect on Pandu Roga with the added advantage of being free from side effects. Background: Ciprofloxacin is a common and widely used antibiotic in both human and animal health, But indiscriminate, overdose and long term used may cause toxicity The research work was designed to examine the changes in hematological parameters: Total Erythrocyte count (TEC), Hemoglobin (Hb), Total Leukocyte Count (TLC) and Differential Leukocyte Count (DLC) and biochemical parameters: Total Cholesterol (T), Triglyceride (TG), High Density Lipoprotein (HDL) and Serum Creatinine (SC) in mice treated with ciprofloxacin and its interaction with vitamin C. Methods: A total of 20 male Swiss Albino mice aging one month and weighing of 22.5±2.3 gm were taken, and were allotted into four equal groups (n=5). After acclimatization, Group D was kept as control and was fed with normal mice pellet and water only. Mice of group A, B, and C were maintained as treatment groups and fed with ciprofloxacin (Ciprocin® )@ 2 mg/kg body weight (bwt), 1 mg/kg bwt and 0.5 mg/kg bwt in normal saline orally respectively throughout the experimental period of 14 days. Besides 2 mg Vitamin C @ 2mg /kg bwt was supplied in water for all the treated mice. Results: The results indicated that the values of RBC and Hb in the treated groups were decreased significantly (P<0.01) as compared to the control group. White blood cell (WBC) counts in group B and C were almost similar to those of control group, whereas it was lowered significantly (P<0.05) in group A. However, lymphocyte, monocyte levels significantly (P<0.01) increased in all the treated groups as compared to the control, whereas neutrophil and eosinophil counts in group B and C were lowered (P<0.01) as compared to the control. The TG values were recorded as lower (P<0.01) in group C than in group A. Cholesterol level was found highest (P<0.01) in control mice (group D) as compared to treated groups A, B and C. HDL was decreased and SC was increased significantly (P<0.01) in the treated groups as compared to the control group. Conclusions: It could be concluded that treatment mice with vitamin C concomitantly with ciprofloxacin not exert restoring effect significantly on hematological parameters of TEC and Hb but exert effect significantly on total WBC count, lymphocyte, monocyte and lipid profile.

The present research work was undertaken to study the effect of multi enzymes and vitamin AD3E on body weight and hematological parameter (TEC, Hb Concentration and ESR) in growing broilers fed with enzyme and vitamin AD3E with normal broiler ration. 20 broiler chickens of 10 (ten) days old “Hubbard Classic” were taken for study. The chicks were divided randomly into four groups with five chicks in each group. Group A designated as control group and was given normal broiler ration and rest of the groups were given enzyme and vitamin preparation. Group B was given enzyme only, group C was given vitamin only and group D was given both enzyme and vitamin as per schedule. It was observed that enzyme and vitamin AD3E preparation enhanced the growth rate of broilers. On the final day of experiment the body weight was significantly increased (P<0.01) in the treated groups in comparison to that of control group, TEC, Hb concentration and ESR values were significantly (P<0.01) increased in all treated  groups than the control group and among the treated groups vitamin AD3E showed lowest performance.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/pa.v22i1-2.16471 Progress. The experiment was conducted to compare the effects of animal fat (ghee) and vegetable fat (dalda) in respect to hemato-biochemical changes in mice. A total of twenty one, 45 days old (Swiss Albino) mice were randomly divided into three equal experimental groups as A, B and C (n=7). Group A was considered as control and fed only broiler pellet, group B was fed broiler pellet with ghee (25 gm/1000 gm feed) and group C was fed broiler pellet with dalda (25 gm/1000 gm feed) respectively. At day 40, all mice were sacrificed to collect blood for hematological parameters where blood profile was analyzed by biochemical tests. Total erythrocyte counts were significantly (p<0.05) higher in ghee and dalda supplemented mice (B: 8.99±.34 million/cu. mm. and C: 8.27±.43 million/cu.mm.) compared to control group (A: 7.49±.22 million/cu.mm.). The significantly (P<0.05) higher hemoglobin concentration was recorded in ghee supplemented group B (9.02±.18 gm/dl) than other groups and control group A showed lowest value (7.59±.52 gm/dl). In Blood profile analysis, serum cholesterol and HDL value were higher in ghee and dalda supplemented group than control group. On the other hand triglyceride value was significantly (P<0.05) lower in control group (A: 44±4.58 mg/dl) than ghee and dalda supplemented group (B: 80.33±2.51 mg/dl, C: 71.2±4.26 mg/dl). The study suggests that ghee and dalda supplementation with regular diet would be able to significantly increase cholesterol and triglyceride in mice.Asian J. Med. Biol. Res. The experiment was carried out to determine the efficacy of Ivermectin (Ivomec® S/C Formulation) against gastrointestinal nematodiasis and ectoparasites including stephanofilaria on crossbred cattle, to determine the effect of drug on certain hematological parameters like hemoglobin (Hb) content, packed cell volume (PCV) and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR)in crossbred cattle and to determine the effect of the drug on live weight. A total of 100 cattle were selected randomly and examined for presence of both endo and ectoparasites including stephanofilaria. Gastrointestinal nematodiasis were detected by examination of fecal samples and ectoparasites as well as stephanofilaria were detected by physical examination. Out of 100 cattle, 20 were found to suffer from both endo and ectoparasites. These 20 cattle were selected finally for the research work. Then these cattle were divided into two groups, group A (treated group, n=15) and group B (control group, n=5). Ivermectin was injected subcutaneously to the cattle of group A @ 200µm/kg body weight (1ml/50 kg body weight). The therapeutic efficacy of the drug against gastrointestinal nematodiasis was determined by investigation of fecal egg count reduction and the efficacy was 100% against the common nematodes in crossbred cattle on day 7, 14, 21 and 28 of post treatment period. Ticks within a markable area (25 square inches) were counted on day 0 and lice infestation was marked as infected on day 0. Ivermectin showed 100% effectiveness at the 7, 14, 21 and 28 day of post treatment period against both tick and lice infestation. The efficacy of the drug against stephanofilariasis (humpsore) was determined by reduction of diameter of the sore on the day 14, 42 and 56 of post treatment period. All the sores were completely healed up by the 56 days. During the study of hematological parameters it was seen that Hb and PCV were increased whereas ESR values were decreased on post treatment days. In this study the mean live weight of the cattle of treated group was increased after treatment with ivermectin and increased body weight was 5.13% on the 28th day of post treatment period. From the above findings it may be concluded that ivermectin was 100% effective against gastrointestinal nematodes common in crossbred cattle. Effectiveness of the drug against external parasites was 100%. In this study hematological parameters were changed significantly after treatment with ivermectin, body weight of animal treated with ivermectin was increased and no adverse effect of the drug was found in this study.

The effect of arsenic trioxide along with tannic acid, di-sodium hydrogen phosphate (DSHP), alum and effects of sand-charcoal-iron-filter (SCIF)-bed filtrated water along with alum on body weight and some hematological parameters were carried out on a total of 30 (01 month old) adult Newzealand white rabbits. The Rabbits were randomly divided in to 6 equal groups (A,B,C,D,E & F) at the ratio of three males and two females in each group, rats of group A was kept as control without giving any treatment, rabbits of group B received arsenic trioxide@100 ppm, group C received arsenic trioxide @ 100 ppm plus tannic acid @100 ppm, group D received arsenic trioxide @ 100 ppm plus di-sodium hydrogen phosphate @100 ppm, group E received arsenic trioxide @100 ppm plus alum @100 ppm orally daily for 60 days in all cases and group F received alum @100 ppm in SCIF-bed filtrated water orally daily for 60 days. The result showed that body weight gain of control group (A) per week per rabbit was found to increase but in treated group B (arsenic trioxide@100ppm orally daily) the mean body weight of group B were decreased gradually and significant (P<0.05) decrease in body weight was observed at 40 days of feeding and at day 60 it was highly significant (P<0.01). Rabbits of group C, D and E were apparently normal and mild body weight reductions were observed which was statistically insignificant. No body weight loss was observed in rabbit of group F. TEC, Hb and PCV were slightly reduced in group C, D, E and F but highly significant (P< 0.01) reduction of TEC, Hb and PCV were observed in group B. ESR values were slightly increased in group C, D, E and F but highly significant (P< 0.01) increased of ESR value was observed in group B. Leukocytosis was observed in rabbits of group B. In this study, it was concluded that treatment with arsenic oxide at low doses has harmful effects on experimental animals including hematological alterations.Asian J. Med. Biol. Res. Introduction:  Long term physical training has been considered to adversely affect the performance of athletes especially the females. It may be due to the iron depletion caused by hemolysis or hemodilution results from plasma volume expansion. This study aims to assess the effect of heavy exercise on hemoglobin concentration and some other hematological parameters in female athletes. Methods: This cross sectional study was carried out in the Department of physiology, Dhaka Medical College, Dhaka, from July 2010-June 2011. A total number of 105 females (70 athletes and 35 non athletes) between 15-25 years of age were recruited. The 35 apparently healthy female non athletes were taken as control (Group-A) and 70 female athletes comprise the study group (Group-B). According to sporting category, Group-B was further subdivided as B1:Runners and B2:Cyclists. Hemoglobin percentages (Hb %), red blood cell (RBC) concentration, packed cell volume (PCV), serum iron, serum ferritin and total iron binding capacity (TIBC) were measured in fasting state after two months training. Statistical analysis was done by using SPSS/ win.15.0 for comparison between the groups, using student’s unpaired “t” test. Results: Mean Hb%, RBC, PCV, iron and ferritin level were significantly (P<0.001) lower in athletes than those of control group. Within the study groups, runner’s serum iron and ferritin level were lower than cyclists.  TIBC significantly (P<0.001) rose in Group-B2 in comparison to Group-A. Conclusions: The current study showed that intense physical exercise leads to early stages of Hb%, RBC, PCV, iron and ferritin depletion which might compromise the health and performance of athletes. Objective: To compare the efficacy of Ferrous sulfate with iron polymaltosecomplex in treatment of iron deficiency anemia in children in terms of rise in hemoglobin. Studydesign: Randomized clinical trial. Setting: Department of Paediatric Medicine Unit I AlliedHospital Faisalabad. Study duration: 6 months. Methodology: All the children of age group6 month to 12year with hemoglobin level <10g/dl, MCV<70fl corrected for age, MCHC<32%,serum ferritin<8μg/l were included. All other cases of anemia other than iron deficiency anemiasuch as thalassemia, sickle cell anemia, lead poisoning etc, patients with severe anemia(hb≤6g/dl) because they need blood transfusion to correct anemia, those with decompensatedheart failure or acute infection were excluded. After enrolment patients were randomly dividedinto two groups by lottery method. Group A, patients were given ferrous sulphate. Group B,patients were given iron polymaltose complex (IPC). Both iron preparations were given inthe dose of 5mg/kg/day of elemental iron in three divided dosage 30 minutes before meals.Patients were assessed at one month interval after the start of treatment and hemoglobin waschecked at follow up visit by taking 2cc blood. Results: Sixty children were studied. Meanage was 2.5 ± 5.1 years, range 7 months to 12 years with 32 girls, 28 boys. The patients wereevenly distributed between the two treatment groups (IPC, n = 30, 50%; ferrous sulfate, n =30, 50%). All erythrocyte-related hematologic parameters after one month treatment showed asignificant improvement from baseline with both treatments. A significant improvement in Hbwas observed after one month treatment in the IPC group 9.5 ± 1.1g/dL to 10.6 ±1.0 g/dL andthe ferrous sulfate group 9.4 ± 1.6 g/dL to 11.2 ± 0.9 g/dL which was statistically significant.Conclusion: From this randomized study, it is concluded that both ferrous sulphate and ironpolymaltose complex have equal efficacy in treatment of iron deficiency anemia

Hematological indication is an important finding for pathophysiological analysis of biological science. This study was designed with the aim to investigate the effects of residual antibiotics on hematological parameters of broiler following discriminate and indiscriminate use. The day old broiler chicks were collected and reared up to 31 days. The treatment was started from the day 16th until sacrifice. The chicks were randomly divided into three groups namely control group (Group A), discriminate antibiotic group (Group B) and indiscriminate antibiotic group (Group C) on the 14th day. The discriminate group was treated with antibiotic, colistin sulfate maintaining the withdrawal period of one week. In case of indiscriminate group the withdrawal period was not maintained and antibiotic treatment was continued till the day of sacrifice. The Hb (%) of control, discriminate and indiscriminate groups were 8.34±0.15, 6.89±0.27, and 7.14±0.23 respectively. The differences among means were statistically significant (P<0.05). The Packed Cell Volume (PCV) of control, discriminate, and indiscriminate groups were 23.51±0.76, 21.17±0.94, and 22.83±1.19 respectively. The differences among means were statistically significant. The multiple pair wise comparison of means of blood parameters revealed that there was no significant difference among discriminate and indiscriminate groups. From the above findings, this research could be considered a need based research in Bangladesh to ascertain the influential effect of antibiotic on hematological parameters in broiler. Asian J. Med. An experiment was conducted to investigate the counteracting effects of spirulina in Long Evans rats exposed to oral potentiated sulfonamide administration. 20 rats were randomly assigned into four equal groups (A, B, C and D) and were fed with standard broiler pellet (25g/rat/day) throughout the experimental period of 60 days. Rats of Group A were fed only with pellet without any experimental diet and were defined as control. Rats  of Group B were treated with potentiated sulfonamide @ 96 mg/rat/day orally whereas Group C was treated with potentiated sulfonamide @ 96 mg/rat/day plus spirulina (Spirulina maxima) @ 50 mg/rat/day orally (low dose spirulina). In Group D, potentiated sulfonamide and spirulina (Spirulina maxima) were given through feed @ 96 mg/rat/day and @ 100 mg/rat/day (high dose spirulina) respectively. Hematological parameters (TEC, Hb and absolute count of lymphocyte, neutrophil and eosinophil) and hispathological profile of liver and kidney were recorded. The investigation revealed that the oral administration of sulfonamide significantly (p<0.01) decreased the TEC (5.93±0.24) value, number of lymphocyte (581.76±3.70) and neutrophil (581.76±3.70) compared to other treated groups and control group. On the other hand significant (p<0.01) increase (422.86±2.34) in eosinophil population has been found in rats fed on sulfonamide irrespective of spirulina supplementation on the final day of experiment compared to other treated group and control group. From this experiment it is evidenced that spirulina has a potential counteracting effect against sulfonamide. Histopathology of kidney and liver was done at the end of experiment (60 days) and no significant change was found except in the kidney of Group B and C.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/bjvm.v10i1-2.15650

On day 16, they were randomly divided into 3 groups, namely Group–A (Control group), Group-B (Discriminate group) and Group-C (Indiscriminate group). Each group contains 6 birds. The discriminate and indiscriminate group was treated with antibiotic, enrofloxacin. In Group-B withdrawal period was followed and treatment was stopped before 7 days of sacrifice. On the other hand, withdrawal period was not maintained in indiscriminate group and the antibiotic treatment was continued until the day of sacrifice. The Total erythrocyte count (million/mm3) of control, discriminate, and indiscriminate groups were 3.15±0.047, 2.66±0.091, and 2.90±0.11 respectively. The Hb (gm%) of control, discriminate, and indiscriminate groups were 8.17±0.07, 7.37±0.09, and 7.28±0.07 respectively. The Packed Cell Volume (%) of control, discriminate, and indiscriminate group were 24.17±0.48, 23.17±0.48, and 22.33±0.67 respectively. There was no significant difference on blood parameter found among the groups. Therefore, discriminate and indiscriminate use of enrofloxacin has no bad effect on hematological parameters of broiler.
