Abstract Background The number of e-health interventions developed for breast cancer survivors continues to increase. However, issues with engagement and retention are common. This study aimed to explore e-health literacy rates and access to smartphones and tablets in a large sample of breast cancer survivors. Methods In study 1, women were recruited from outpatient breast clinics across England and Wales. Eligible women were asked to complete a questionnaire pack to assess their access to devices and their e-health literacy. Multiple regression analyses were run to assess the relationship between technology access and e-health literacy with sociodemographic variables such as age, social deprivation, and education. Study 2 presents a smaller sample recruited through social media who answered a questionnaire relating to use of mobile devices and e-health, and apps. Results Two thousand nine women participated in the study. Seventy-one percent had access to a smartphone, 54% had access to a tablet, and 20% did not have access to either device. Multiple logistic regressions showed that women who were younger, had higher levels of education, and who were from less deprived areas were more likely to have access to either device. Poorer e-health literacy was associated with being older, having less education, and not having access to a mobile device. Conclusions Whilst the results show relatively widespread access to mobile devices, there is evidence of a digital divide across some groups. Online interventions should be developed with consideration of individuals who are less e-health-literate and less technologically adept in order to increase the likelihood of engagement.

Abstract Objective Mobile health (mHealth) interventions may improve diabetes outcomes, but require engagement. Little is known about what factors impede engagement, so the authors examined the relationship between patient factors and engagement in an mHealth medication adherence promotion intervention for low-income adults with type 2 diabetes (T2DM). Materials and Methods Eighty patients with T2DM participated in a 3-month mHealth intervention called MEssaging for Diabetes that leveraged a mobile communications platform. Participants received daily text messages addressing and assessing medication adherence, and weekly interactive automated calls with adherence feedback and questions for problem solving. Longitudinal repeated measures analyses assessed the relationship between participants’ baseline characteristics and the probability of engaging with texts and calls. Results On average, participants responded to 84.0% of texts and participated in 57.1% of calls. Compared to Whites, non-Whites had a 63% decreased relative odds (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] = 0.37, 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.19-0.73) of participating in calls. In addition, lower health literacy was associated with a decreased odds of participating in calls (AOR = 0.67, 95% CI, 0.46-0.99, P = .04), whereas older age ( Pnonlinear = .01) and more depressive symptoms (AOR = 0.62, 95% CI, 0.38-1.02, P = .059) trended toward a decreased odds of responding to texts. Conclusions Racial/ethnic minorities, older adults, and persons with lower health literacy or more depressive symptoms appeared to be the least engaged in a mHealth intervention. To facilitate equitable intervention impact, future research should identify and address factors interfering with mHealth engagement.

Background/Aims Research has shown that health literacy can influence an individual's ability to practise self-care, particularly for patients with heart failure. This study aimed to assess health literacy and its relationship with heart failure knowledge and self-care practices in this patient group. Methods An observational sub-study was conducted with the data from a large randomised control trial that evaluated the relationship between patients' health literacy, general literacy, knowledge of heart failure and self-care. Results A total of 36 participants were recruited, of which 33 (89.9%) had adequate levels of health literacy. Health literacy was positively associated with heart failure knowledge. However, 67.7% of participants with adequate health literacy were found to have inadequate levels of self-care management. Conclusions Health literacy may facilitate better heart failure knowledge, but it does not necessarily lead to improved self-care management in patients with heart failure. This suggest that clinicians need to put more emphasis on translating knowledge into behavioural changes for self-care in this patient group.

Objective: To analyze the level of health literacy regarding prevention of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and studied the relationship between the health literacy and sexual experience of Vocational students in health region 7, Thailand. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted using questionnaires. The questionnaires consisted of questions on health literacy and sexual experiences. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics and inferential statistics, including chi-square tests to analyze the relationship between health literacy and sexual experiences. Results: The present study participants comprised of 364 vocational students, 220 (60.4%) male students, and 144 (39.6%) female students. Almost half of the male students (47.3%) had sexual relationship by the age of 15.8 years (SD 1.7), 98.1% of them had their first sexual relationship with their girlfriends, and 81.7% used condoms. Meanwhile, 31.3% of the female students had sexual relationship by the age of 15.7 years (SD 1.3), all of them had first sexual relationship with their boyfriends, and 88.9% used condoms. Most students had low health literacy level, which included 79.5% of the male students and 62.5% of female students. There was significant relationship between sexual experience and health literacy in STD prevention in both male and female students (p<0.05). Conclusion: The present study found that the health literacy in the prevention of STDs was low among the participants. Therefore, education and health care sector should be aware of the situation and jointly develop health education programs in the prevention of STDs for the vocational students and teenagers. Although it has been well documented that poor health literacy is associated with limited participation in cancer clinical trials, studies assessing the relationships between cancer health literacy (CHL) and participation in research among diverse populations are lacking. In this study, we examined the relationship between CHL and willingness to participate in cancer research and/or donate bio-specimens (WPRDB) among African Americans, Latinos, and Whites. Participants completed the Cancer Health Literacy Test and the Multidimensional Cancer Literacy Questionnaire. Total-scale and subscale scores, frequencies, means, and distributions were computed. Analyses of variance, the Bonferroni procedure, and the Holm method were used to examine significant differences among groups. Cronbach’s alphas estimated scales’ internal consistency reliability. Significant interactions were found between race/ethnicity, gender, and CHL on WPRDB scales and subscale scores, even after education and age were taken into account. Our study confirms that CHL plays an important role that should be considered and researched further. The majority of participants were more willing to participate in non-invasive research studies (surveys, interviews, and training) or collection of bio-specimens (saliva, check cells, urine, and blood) and in studies led by their own healthcare providers, and local hospitals and universities. However, participants were less willing to participate in more-invasive studies requiring them to take medications, undergo medical procedures or donate skin/tissues. We conclude that addressing low levels of CHL and using community-based participatory approaches to address the lack of knowledge and trust about cancer research among diverse populations may increase not only their willingness to participate in research and donate bio-specimens, but may also have a positive effect on actual participation rates.
