A hybrid technique, based on mode summation and finite differences, was used to silnulate the ground motion induced in the city of Rome by possible earthquakes occurring in the main seisrnogenetic areas surrounding the city: the Central Apennines and the Alban Hills. The results of the numerical simulations are used for a seismic inicrozonation in the city of Rome, which can be used for the retrofitting of buildings of special social and cultural value. On the basis of our analysis Rome can be divided into six main zones: (1) the edges and (2) the central part of the alluvial basin of the River Tiber; (3) the edges and (4) the central part of the Paleotiber basin; the areas outside the large basins of the Tiber and Paleotiber, where we distinguish between (5) areas without, and (6) areas with a layer of volcanic rocks close to the surface. The strongest amplification effects have to be expected at the edges of the Tiber basin, with maximum spectral amplification of the order of 5 to 6, and strong arnplifications occur inside the entire alluvial basin of the Tiber. The presence of a near-surface layer of rigid material is not sufficient to classify a location as a <<hard-rock site>> when the rigid material covers a sedimentary complex. The reason is that the underlying sedimentary complex causes amplifications at the surface due to resonance effects. This phenomenon can be observed in the Paleotiber basin, where spectral amplifications in the frequency range 0.4-1.0 Hz reach values of the order of 3 to 4.

A hybrid technique, based on mode summation and finite differences, is used to simulate the ground motion induced in the city of Rome by the January 13, 1915, Fucino (Italy) earthquake (ML=6.8). The technique allows us to take into consideration source, path, and local soil effects. The results of the numerical simulations are used for a comparison between the observed distribution of damage in Rome, and the computed peak ground acceleration, the maximum response of simple oscillators, and the so-called “total energy of ground motion”. The total energy of ground motion is in good agreement with the observed distribution of damage. From the computation of spectral ratios, it has been recognized that the presence of a near-surface layer of rigid material is not sufficient to classify a location as a “hard-rock site” when the rigid material has a sedimentary complex below it. This is because the underlying sedimentary complex causes amplifications due to resonances. Within sedimentary basins, incident energy in certain frequency bands can also be shifted from the vertical, into the radial component of motion. This phenomenon is very localized, both in frequency and space, and closely neighboring sites can be characterized by large differences in the seismic response.

AbstractThe sustainable urban redevelopment project to protect biodiversity was developed to regenerate the external spaces of an ancient rural farmhouse, Villa Framarino, in the regional Natural Park of Lama Balice, a shallow erosive furrow (lama) rich in biodiversity, between two suburbs of the city of Bari (Apulia, Italy) and close to the city airport. This work includes a complex system of activities aimed not only at a spatial revaluation, necessary to relaunch the urban image, but it is accompanied by interventions of a cultural, social, economic, environmental and landscape nature, aimed at increasing the quality of life, in compliance with the principles of sustainability and social participation. One of the means to revitalize a territory subject to redevelopment is the planning of events and activities of socio-cultural value that involve the population to revive the sense of belonging to the territory and the community and at the same time to protect the biodiversity of the urban park of the protected natural area.

&lt;p&gt;On April 6th 2009 (01:32 UTC) strong earthquake of magnitude M&lt;sub&gt;W&lt;/sub&gt;6.1 occurred near the city of L&amp;#8217;Aquila in the Abruzzo region in the Central Apennines of Italy. Due to the extensional processes the Abruzzo region is characterized by prominent historical seismicity. However, before the 2009 event the background seismic activity is characterised as sparse and mostly clustered in space and time. The general lack of events, especially small magnitude events before the 2009 event motivated us to study the long-term near-fault seismicity before the large earthquake occurrence. To achieve this we first have to extend the existing catalog. We take into consideration the data from the AQU (42.354, 13.405) station that has been recorded in the city of L&amp;#8217;Aquila, near Paganica fault responsible for the 2009 event, during an extensive period of 29-years, 19 years before the event itself. The catalog extension is performed by applying the two-stage convolutional neural network pipeline for earthquake detection and characterisation (epicentral distance and magnitude) using three component signal station waveforms. The algorithm allows us to successfully detect ~800 local events (less than 10 km from the AQU station) in the period 1990-2009. We here present a detailed analysis of this catalog including waveforms characterization to derive new insights about the long term preparation processes(es) occuring before the 2009 M&lt;sub&gt;w&lt;/sub&gt;6.1 earthquake.&lt;/p&gt;

Статья посвящена истории бытования мезенской росписи - зооморфного орнамента, использовавшегося с начала XIX в. мастерами д. Палащелье Архангельской губ. для декорирования деревянных изделий, и в первую очередь прялок. В центре внимания находится судьба мезенской лошадки - главного символа палащельской росписи, ставшего в XXI в. основой локального бренда в г. Мезени и его окрестностях. В работе рассматривается история палащельского промысла, включая трансформацию его социального, экономического и культурного значений на протяжении XX-XXI вв. Прялка - главный носитель мезенской росписи - перестала выполнять свою утилитарную роль, став объектом семейной памяти и культурной ценностью, связанной с локальной идентичностью местных жителей и художественным значением, определяемым экспертами-профессионалами. Вследствие этих перемен, а также миграций населения из деревень в города прялки с мезенской росписью стали ассоциироваться с покинутой малой родиной и деревенским миром в целом, вызывая к жизни особую форму чувствительности, требующей специальных навыков понимания, толкования и любви к мезенской росписи. Как показано в работе, два режима восприятия мезенской лошадки - семейной памяти и эстетической ценности - тесно взаимосвязаны, определяя эмоциональную привязанность и популярность этого элемента традиционной росписи среди современных жителей г. Мезени и Мезенского района. This article concerns the history of the Mezen horse, a zoormorphic ornament from the village Palashchelye in the Mezen Region of Arkhangelsk Province. From the beginning of the 19th century it has been used by craftsmen to decorate wooden items, especially spinning wheels. In the beginning of the present century the Mezen horse became the symbol of Palashchelye painting and the main local brand for the city of Mezen and its environs. The article examines the history of Palashchel crafts and discusses the transformation of its social, economic and cultural significance during the 20th and 21st centuries. The spinning wheel, the main bearer of Mezen decoration, has ceased to fulfill a utilitarian role, becoming instead a focus of family memories and cultural value, interpreted both in terms of local identity and artistic significance. As a result of this change, as well as the migration of the population from villages to cities, spinning wheels with Mezen painting began to be associated with one’s abandoned birthplace and the rural world in general. This has given rise to a special kind of sensitivity that entails special skills of interpretation as well as love. Two different modes of such sensibility are discussed in the article - the mode of family memory and the mode of esthetic value - that are interwoven, endowing the Mezen horse with emotional meaning and broad popularity among the modern urban inhabitants of Mezen and its environs.

AbstractIn this study, the boundary-layer tangential wind budget equation following the radius of maximum wind, together with an assumed thermodynamical quasi-equilibrium boundary layer is used to derive a new equation for tropical cyclone (TC) intensification rate (IR). A TC is assumed to be axisymmetric in thermal wind balance with eyewall convection becoming in moist slantwise neutrality in the free atmosphere above the boundary layer as the storm intensifies as found recently based on idealized numerical simulations. An ad-hoc parameter is introduced to measure the degree of congruence of the absolute angular momentum and the entropy surfaces. The new IR equation is evaluated using results from idealized ensemble full-physics axisymmetric numerical simulations. Results show that the new IR equation can reproduce the time evolution of the simulated TC intensity. The new IR equation indicates a strong dependence of IR on both TC intensity and the corresponding maximum potential intensity (MPI). A new finding is the dependence of TC IR on the square of the MPI in terms of the near-surface wind speed for any given relative intensity. Results from some numerical integrations of the new IR equation also suggest the finite-amplitude nature of TC genesis. In addition, the new IR theory is also supported by some preliminary results based on best-track TC data over the North Atlantic and eastern and western North Pacific. Compared with the available time-dependent theories of TC intensification, the new IR equation can provide a realistic intensity-dependent IR during weak intensity stage as in observations.

This study develops a comprehensive seismic risk model for the city of Chania, in Greece, which is located ina highly seismic-prone region due to the occurrenceof moderate to large earthquakes because of the nearby major subduction zone between African and Eurasian tectonic plates. The main aim is to reduce the seismic risk for the study area by incorporating the spatial distribution of the near-surface shear wave velocity model and the soil classification, along with all possible seismic sources, taking into account historical events. The study incorporates and correlates various ground motion scenarios and geological fault zones as well as information on existing buildings to develop a seismic risk model using QuakeIST software, and then the seismic hazard and a realistic prediction of resulting future adverse effects are assessed. The developed model can assist the municipal authorities of Chania to be prepared for potential seismic events, as well as city planners and decisionmakers, who can use the model as an effective decision-making tool to identify the seismic vulnerability of the city buildings and infrastructure. Thus, this study enables the implementation of an appropriate and viable earthquake-related hazards strategy to mitigate damage and losses in future earthquakes.

Big Tail Elephant Working Group (daweixiang gongzuo zu, hereafter BTE) is synonymous with the city of Guangzhou and the surrounding Pearl River Delta. Formed in 1991, the group is most closely associated with the artists Chen Shaoxiong (1962–2016), Liang Juhui (1959–2006), Lin Yilin (1964–) and Xu Tan (1957–). This article re-examines BTE artists’ practice from 1991 to 1994 and argues that the artist’s performing body provides the critical lens through which to understand BTE artists’ work during this time. Acknowledging that the experience of BTE’s work was primarily physical, embodied and performative allows for an important reconsideration of not only their works but also the predominant ways in which the global capitalist ‘turn’ in the 1990’s China has been discussed in art historical writing. This article argues that BTE artists were primarily interested in urban forms for what they signified about commercialization as a form of a new political rationality after 1989 and suggests that BTE artists were ultimately concerned with commodification’s transformation of society and of ideas of cultural value.

&lt;p&gt;Faulting in seismically active regions commonly involves the deformation of unconsolidated to poorly lithified sediments at shallow to near-surface depths. When compared to classic crustal strength profiles that predict a velocity-strengthening behaviour for the first few km of depth, the propagation of seismic rupture to the surface appears counterintuitive. Rock deformation experiments have shown an inverse relationship between normal stress and displacement needed to the onset of dynamic weakening during seismic slip, meaning that for a seismic rupture to be able to propagate towards the surface, displacements should be large enough to counter the progressive decrease of normal and confining stresses.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;In this contribution, we document the occurrence of mirror-like faults that formed within 20-30 m-thick, unconsolidated colluvium fan deposits at the hanging wall of the active Vado di Corno Fault Zone (VCFZ) in the Central Apennines, Italy. The deposits lie in direct contact with the master normal-fault surface, are Late Pleistocene to Holocene in age, and consist of angular carbonate clasts with grain size ranging ~0.1-10 mm derived from the dismantling of the adjacent VCFZ footwall. Field observations of cross cutting relationships and marker layer displacements suggest a maximum formation depth of the faults of c. 20-30 m and slip accommodated along single faults on the order of few cm. Faults are organised in three sets: subvertical, N-S and NE-SW trending faults, and WNW-ESE striking faults, synthetic and antithetic to the VCFZ master fault surface (N195/55&amp;#176;). Faults are commonly lineated with a dip-slip to slightly oblique kinematic.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Detailed microstructural analysis of the mirror faults shows extreme strain localization on a 2-5 &amp;#181;m thick principal slip zone composed of calcite nanograins ranging 10s-100s nm in size with amorphous material and phyllosilicates occurring along grain boundaries and within intragranular porosity. Locally, aggregates of nanograins coalesce and transition to &amp;#181;m-sized polygonal, larger grains. Calcite nanograins are mostly equant, with straight grain boundaries, 120&amp;#176; dihedral angles, and negligible porosity. These microstructures strongly resemble high temperature recrystallization structures documented along seismic faults exhumed from &gt;5 km of depth, where stresses are significantly larger. In our case, field constraints show that deformation occurred in very confining stress conditions and with limited displacement.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Collectively, our observations provide new documentation on the conditions for the formation of mirror faults and new insights into the mechanics of faulting and strain accommodation in the shallowest part of the crust (&lt; 1 km).&lt;/p&gt;
