Twenty-four pigs received barley-based diets with either fishmeal or soybean meal as supplemental protein and either 0 or 250 ppm supplemental Cu. Supplemental Cu increased rate of gain for fishmeal-supplemented pigs but not for soybean meal-supplemented pigs.Cu concentration of intestinal tissue (wet basis) from the duodenum, two sections of jejunum, the ileum and colon averaged 17 ppm and of intestinal contents averaged 28 ppm when either protein supplement without Cu was fed. Addition of Cu to the diets increased concentration of Cu in both intestinal tissue (average 104 ppm) and contents (average 253 ppm), but source of protein did not influence the increase. The liver (wet basis) averaged 29 ppm Cu for unsupplemented pigs fed either protein supplement, 166 ppm for Cu-supplemented pigs fed soybean meal and 329 ppm for Cu-supplemented pigs fed fish-meal. Cu levels in portal blood plasma averaged 21 μg/100 ml and were not significantly influenced by dietary treatment, sex or weight. Cu in systemic blood plasma averaged 110 μg/100 ml. Unsaturated fatty acids were increased in the backfat of pigs receiving the fishmeal-supplemented diet with Cu.Weight at slaughter (50, 70 or 90 kg) influenced Cu concentration only in contents of the colon and in the liver. Gilts did not differ from barrows in Cu concentration in tissues or intestinal contents. The results suggest that the intestinal mucosa has a major influence on the control of systemic Cu levels.

We measured the coefficients of viscosity, shear rates and shear stresses of chicken small intestinal and caecal contents, including solid particles, using a tube-flow viscometer. The coefficients of viscosity of chicken small intestinal and caecal contents were correlated negatively with their shear rates, a characteristic typical of non-Newtonian fluids. The coefficient of viscosity of the small intestinal contents was lower than that of the caecal contents at a shear rate of 1 s−1. Chicken caecal contents were more viscous than pig caecal contents. The exponential relationship between shear stress and shear rate showed that chicken small intestinal and caecal contents had an apparent Herschel–Bulkley fluid nature. These results indicate that solid particles, including uric acid crystals, are mainly responsible for the viscosity of the digesta in the chicken.

Abstract Specimens of Oncicola venezuelensis (Marteau, 1977) were recovered from fragments of intestinal tissue of a female Puma concolar (Linn, 1771) found dead in Petrópolis, Rio de Janeiro in 2017. A total of 140 helminths were recovered. Five males and 5 females of the helminths were analyzed morphologically as well as 50 parasite eggs recovered in intestinal contents. Morphologically, these helminths were compatible with the genus Oncicola, because of the size and shape of the proboscis, the size and disposition of the lemnisci and the morphometry of the eggs, in which the external membrane of the shell was delicate and clear. From histopathology, the helminths were deeply embeded in the mucosa reaching up to the muscle layer. One specimen was also identified molecularly with universal primers that amplified the eukaryote region ITS1-5.8S-ITS2. The helminth showed 99% identity with the gene sequence of O. venezuelensis deposited in GenBank. It is important to emphasize, this parasite has been very little reported in the literature, which reinforces the importance of this report.

The cause of bluecomb disease in turkeys is unknown. Filtration of infective intestinal contents suggests a viral origin. To date, it has not been possible to isolate the etiologic agent in various cell cultures. The purpose of this work was to characterize as many virus-like entities as were recognizable in intestines of both healthy and bluecomb-infected turkeys. By a comparison of the viral populations it was hoped that some insight might be gained into the cause of this disease. Studies of turkey hemorraghic enteritis by Gross and Moore (Avian Dis. 11: 296-307, 1967) have suggested that a bacteriophage-host cell interaction may bear some causal relationship to that disease.

Research was performed on the friction, wear and efficiency of plastic gears made of modern engineering polymers and their composites both in a clean environment (adhesive sliding surfaces) and in an environment contaminated with solid particles and dust (abrasive), with no lubrication at all. The purpose is to give a general view about the results of abrasive wear tests including seven soil types as abrasive media. At the first stage of the research silicious sand was applied between the meshing gears and the wear of plastic and steel gears was evaluated and analyzed from the point of different material properties (elongation at break, hardness, yield stress, modulus of elasticity) and its combinations. The different correlations between the experienced wear and material features are also introduced. At the second stage of the project the abrasive sand was replaced with different physical soil types. The abrasive wear of gears is plotted in the function of soil types. The results highlight on the considerable role of physical soil types on abrasive wear resistance and the conclusions contain the detailed wear resistance. The results offer a new tribology database for the operation and maintenance of agricultural machines with the opportunity of a better material selection according to the dominant soil type. This can finally result longer lifetime and higher reliability of wearing plastic/steel parts.
