Several aircraft types are commonly used to perform many search and rescue missions throughout the world. Aircraft have been used because they are able to offer a bird’s eye view of the surrounding search areas. In general, these aircraft come in various shapes, sizes and weights, and have myriad capabilities in carrying rescued and/or injured personnel and also equipment for the search and medical operations during the search and rescue sorties. For an aircraft, takeoff gross weight is important because it will affect the flying performance of the aircraft. To perform an effective search and rescue mission, the right selection of aircraft is essential such that unnecessary resources are not being wasted. In line with this notion, this study examines the distribution of the maximum takeoff gross weight of aircraft that have been typically used in search and rescue sorties. This knowledge will help in the design of future aircraft for such missions and also narrowing the selection of existing aircraft to be used on that kind of operations. It is found from the data analysis that most current operators have been using medium-haul aircraft that have a takeoff gross weight between 4,301 kg and 8,600 kg.

An Unmanned Aerial vehicle (UAV), commonly known as drone, is an aircraft without a human pilot aboard. In recent years, some UAVs are deployed for civil applications, such as policing, firefighting, air pollution monitoring, and aerial search and rescue, etc. Unmanned Aerial vehicle generally include fixed-wing and multi-rotor aircrafts. This research had developed a high endurance quadcopter for search and rescue mission. Target position correction software also was developed in this research. This program uses GPS coordinates embedded in the EXIF information of the aerial photos and more accurately calculates the target’s position. The target’s position error is less than ten meters in 75 meters altitude. Keywords: target position correction software, search and rescue, UAV, quadcopter, and GPS.

The paper studies the matters of using of night vision goggles by the helicopter crews of the State Aviation of Ukraine. The analysis of the perspective systems that can replace night vision goggles based on electronic-optical converter and provide round-the-clock and all-weather flights, landing of the helicopter on unprepared and unlit areas in poor visibility was treated. Currently, the practice of using combat and transport helicopters involves their wider use in the night-time conditions (air warfare, delivery of goods, search-and-rescue operations). Due to low light levels, until recently, most night-time target acquisition tasks have been related with the necessities of providing the artificial target illumination, but in certain instances such illumination deteriorates visibility through an lighttight, phosphorescent atmospheric shells or it just can‟t be carried out. The need for a large number of channels included in the optoelectronic system, caused by the variety of tasks that are solved by it, as well as the imperfection of each individual channel. This forces them to be combined to improve the efficiency of the optoelectronic systems themselves, so that the disadvantages of one channel are offset by the advantages of another. In fact, it is only possible way to ensure the fulfilment of combat task by combining channels operating in different spectral bands in one scheme and by combining detection devices. It can be stated that, despite the undisputed advantages of optoelectronic systems as compared to night-vision goggles, in case of the selecting for installing on a helicopter of optoelectronic systems, it should take into account the much higher cost of optoelectronic systems compared with night-vision goggles. Therefore, the rationale for installing optoelectronic systems must be determined based on the scope of the executing tasks, which are to be conducted by a specific helicopter.

AbstractOn April 25, 2015, a massive 8.1-magnitude earthquake struck Nepal at 2:11 pm (Beijing time). The 68-member-strong China International Search & Rescue Team (CISAR) left for Nepal at 6 am, April 26, to help with relief work. The CISAR was the first foreign team to rescue a survivor who was trapped beneath the rubble in the Gongabu area after the earthquake. On May 8, the team fulfilled the search-and-rescue mission and returned to Beijing. During the 2 weeks of rescue work, the team treated more than 3700 victims and cleared approximately 430 buildings. In this rescue mission, 10 experienced medical officers (including nine doctors and a nurse) from the General Hospital of Chinese People’s Armed Police Force (PAP) comprised the medical team of CISAR. In this report, we focus on the medical rescues by CISAR and discuss the characteristics of the medical rescue in Nepal. (Disaster Med Public Health Preparedness. 2018;12:536–538)
