Abstract Beavers have recolonized much of their historic range throughout the northern hemisphere and numerous studies have documented their habitat preferences and foraging behavior in rural riparian areas. Beavers, however, are also recolonizing waterways in cities, yet there has been little study of habitat use and foraging practices in these managed, urban systems. We studied beaver lodge distribution and riparian foraging preferences along the South Saskatchewan River, Canada, comparing a reach (24 km) passing through the City of Saskatoon where beavers and trees are managed with an upstream reach (29 km) passing through a conservation area where neither beavers nor trees are managed. In a canoe-based census at low flow, we found that beaver density in the conservation area was twice that in the city. Lodges were dispersed in the city with longer water-based distances between them. We found both differences and similarities in beaver foraging behavior. Riparian tree sampling along transects revealed that while diversity in the city and conservation area is markedly different, beavers preferentially cut green ash, Manitoba maple, paper birch and three poplars in both places. Beavers also cut six other tree species in the city, including three that are introduced, but the diversity was higher. A least-squares general linear model showed greater probability of cutting of trees further from the river in the city than conservation area, but of smaller diameter. Study results will be useful to urban planners in managing urban riparian forests and in developing beaver management plans.

The economic valuation of the protected natural parks contributes to a holistic approach of the economy, from the market to the ecological and social perspective, aiming at a sustainable management of the natural heritage as well as reducing its deterioration. It also provides valuable information to policy makers for the protection and conservation of the natural environment. To estimate the recreational use value of the natural parks we applied a revealed preference method and a declared preference method. The results are consistent with previous studies on these types of protected areas.

The city of Surabaya has been voted as one of the pilot areas of mangrove forest conservation in ASEAN. Most of the mangrove forest area in the city of Surabaya spread across the East Coast (Pamurbaya). The purpose of this study is to estimate the total economic value of mangrove forests in the area as a source of information for planning and evaluation of conservation policy. The results of the valuation involving some valuation techiques, both market and non-market approaches, yield total economic value of about Rp 49.6 billion (US$ 3.8 million) per year, or 105.3 million (US$ 8,101.8) per ha per year. Almost all of these values is the use value, particularly direct use valule both extractive (timber and fisheries) and non extractive (outdoor recreation). Indirect use value which consists of abrasion barrier and carbon sinks contributed relatively small compared to the direct use value. Meanwhile, non-use value is the smallest contributors to the total economic value. This fact proves that the mangrove forest in Pamurbaya has economic benefits outweigh the ecological benefits. Keywords: economic valuation, mangrove, non-market approach, the city of Surabaya

The aim of this paper is to estimate the recreational use value of a protected area in the south of Spain, Sierra de Maria-Los Vélez Natural Park in Almeria, using the zonal travel cost method. The estimated consumer surplus ranges from € 7.67 to € 13.29 per person, according to the proposed scenario taking into account travel time as a cost or as an enjoyment. Finally, some conclusions are presented, as well as some strategies to promote the recreational use of the Park and to improve its future management.

Based on the concept of a livable and global age-friendly city, pavements are a public facility that the city should provide to the people. Appropriate pavements will be beneficial for the people, particularly for good quality of life for the elderly to move around in the city. This study explored the behaviour of the elderly in the use of pavements and the problems confronted. The study also evaluated the value of the pavement walking area as it reflected the benefits of pavements to the elderly by applying the Contingent Valuation Method (CVM). During March-May 2017, data were collected using interviews with 601 elderly living in Bangkok. The study indicated that the main problem for senior citizens regarding their use of pavements was from being disturbed by motorbikes riding on the pavements. The average value of pavement for the elderly was about THB 160 (USD 5.30) per person per year. Thus, the benefits of pavements to the elderly in Bangkok was approximately THB 158 million (USD 5.2 million) per year. Thus, policy makers should make proper budget allocations for elderly-friendly pavement management and seriously address the problems confronting the elderly in using pavements, to maximize the usefulness of pavements not only for the elderly but also for the public and to support a sustainable urban development.

Drawing on field research and a survey of 150 Zimbabwean migrants in Johannesburg, this paper explores the dimensions of migrants’ transnational experiences in the urban space. I discuss the use of communication platforms such as WhatsApp and Facebook as well as other means such as telephone calls in fostering the embedding of transnational migrants within both the Johannesburg and the Zimbabwean socio-economic environments. I engage this migrant-embedding using Bourdieusian concepts of “transnational habitus” and “transnational social field,” which are migration specific variations of Bourdieu’s original concepts of “habitus” and “social field.” In deploying these Bourdieusian conceptual tools, I observe that the dynamics of South–South migration as observed in the Zimbabwean migrants are different to those in the South–North migration streams and it is important to move away from using the same lens in interpreting different realities. For Johannesburg-based migrants to operate within the socio-economic networks produced in South Africa and in Zimbabwe, they need to actively acquire a transnational habitus. I argue that migrants’ cultivation of networks in Johannesburg is instrumental, purposive, and geared towards achieving specific and immediate goals, and latently leads to the development and sustenance of flexible forms of permanency in the transnational urban space.

Statement of the problem. Currently the formation of the modern comfortable urban environment is gaining a special social and economic value and moving forward in the priorities of state large-scale programs. The purpose of development of the concept of improvement of public space is definition of the main and accompanying functions of this territory, design of the outline offer of the project of improvement considering all necessary norms and standards and implementation of modern technologies. Results. The conceptual project of “Alley of Architects” includes the basic elements of territory zoning, design of accent objects and implementation of technologies of a “smart-city”. These elements allow one to increase the level of comfort of inhabitants. Conclusions. Improvement of the inhabited places is of particular importance in the conditions of discomfort of the environment. Carrying out a complex of the actions directed to gardening and improvement, introducing modern technologies, the ecological condition, the physical appearance of the city considerably improves. Improvement and modernization of the environment which surrounds the person in the city influences a psychophysical state well that especially important during intensive growth of the cities.
