Abstract The contact pressure distribution and the rolling resistance of a running radial tire under load are fundamental properties of the tire construction, important to the steering performance of automobiles, as is well known. Many theoretical and experimental studies have been previously published on these tire properties. However, the relationships between tire performances in service and tire structural properties have not been clarified sufficiently due to analytical and experimental difficulties. In this paper, establishing a spring support ring model made of a composite belt ring and a Voigt type viscoelastic spring system of the sidewall and the tread rubber, we analyze the one-dimensional contact pressure distribution of a running tire at speeds of up to 60 km/h. The predicted distribution of the contact pressure under appropriate values of damping coefficients of rubber is shown to be in good agreement with experimental results. It is confirmed by this study that increasing velocity causes the pressure to rise at the leading edge of the contact patch, accompanied by the lowered pressure at the trailing edge, and further a slight movement of the contact area in the forward direction.

The compression packer rubber is one of the core components of the packer. According to the sealing mechanism of the compression packers rubber, the deformation of rubber between the central tube and casing tube is analyzed in the initial and working stages. The compression rubber is also strained radially against the support ring by means of a controlled tubular expansion process. In this paper, the theoretical model for the deformation analysis is established by the structure and working characteristics of rubber tube. In addition, the nonlinear relationship between the material, geometry and stress in the constrained and stable deformation stages is analyzed by application of pressure methods. The analytical results show the contact pressure and shear stress distribution on the sealing surface of the rubber and the effect of rubber geometry and its material properties on sealing performance in terms of maximum sealing pressure. Then, the criterion of sealing performance evaluation of the rubber is established by the numerical results. This analytical model will provide a theoretical basis and guidance for the structural design of the compression packer rubber and it will be of great significance to improve the sealing performance and reliability of packer rubber.

In this paper we describe the materials-related challenges in applying folded flex packaging technology to wireless sensor networks and propose solutions for implementing miniaturized 5mm cube platforms. The focus is to apply thin silicon stacking methods using thin flexible substrate interconnect and in particular to investigate the behavior of the selected materials. Both commercial and in-house polyimide substrates, in the thickness range 25μm down to 3μm (each with 4μm of sputtered copper) were analyzed for appropriate electrical, chemical, and mechanical properties. The characterization highlighted that in flex of thickness below 10μm, a dramatic decrease in stiffness occurs and the polyimide wrinkles due to stresses generated by the copper sputtering process. An evaluation determined that specific steps, such as polymer support ring formation, could be employed to eliminate impact of wrinkling on the process of developing the 5mm cube prototypes.

This document is aimed at comparing the fatigue analysis methods based on the RCC-M code and on the harmonized standard EN 13445-3 with a view to quantifying the associated deviations and uncertainties, at each step of the calculation, by taking into account every aspect of each code such as calculation thickness of the FE model, physical properties, combination method and fatigue curve. This comparison study consists in analyzing the 4 Test Cases (TC) described below: • TC1: Study of the cylindrical-edge transition cone with its upper shell/shell type full-penetration butt weld. • TC2: Study of the feedwater nozzle (FWN) with its full-penetration weld on the nozzle support ring. • TC3: Study of the misalignment effect of neutral axes at shell/shell type full-penetration butt weld level. • TC4: Study of the out-of-roundness effect at shell/shell type full-penetration butt weld level. The welds considered in this study are full-penetration butt welds whose RCC-M quality is Level 1, whose welding procedure has been qualified, which are dressed, made flush with base metal by grinding and which have been fully (100%) inspected by NDE.
