Nitriding process through a cyanate liquid salt bath is one of the advanced surface treatment techniques that is recently employed to modify corrosion and wear resistance behaviour of steels. Considering spreading out of P/M alloys application in various industries, especially automotive industry, and the presence of porosities in its structure, in this research the influence of porosities, process duration and temperature parameters in nitrogen diffusion and formation of layers on a P/M Distaloy AE Steel through the advanced cyanate liquid salt bath nitriding process has been investigated. Also it has been analyzed microstructure of layers by means of OEM, SEM and microhardness deep profile investigations. Existence of ε (Fe2-3N) and γ' (Fe4N) phases was detected by XRD analyzing. Results demonstrated that with increasing porosities, it was configured a non-uniform diffusion regions on the surface due to nitrogen atoms dispersion.

Abstract Gaseous ferritic nitrocarburizing, like salt bath nitrocarburizing, involves the introduction of carbon and nitrogen into steel in order to produce a thin layer of iron carbonitride and nitrides, the "white layer" or compound layer, with an underlying diffusion zone containing dissolved nitrogen and iron (or alloy) nitrides. This chapter first presents the development and principles of the process. It then discusses the properties of gaseous ferritic nitrocarburized components. The chapter also presents the applications for the ferritic nitrocarburizing process. It provides an overview of the safety considerations.

Abstract Ferritic nitrocarburizing is a diffusion process that is a modified form of nitriding, not a form of carburizing. The key elements of the process are: temperature, time, suitable nitrogen source, suitable carbon source, and sealed and controlled environment. This chapter provides a detailed discussion on methods of salt bath nitrocarburizing. These include low-cyanide salt bath ferritic nitrocarburizing, salt bath nitrocarburizing plus post treatment, and Kolene Nu-Tride process.
