This paper focuses on discussing the application of FEA theory and method in calculation of composite structure strength between engine cylinder head and head gasket. Based on finite element analysis software, the integrated system of 3D CAD/CAE application software was developed for the finite-element analysis of the composite structure consisting of engine cylinder head and head gasket. By using the software system, several jobs, such as working condition analysis from preloading to outburst operation, structural analysis and steady-state thermal analysis, and thermo-structure coupling analysis, were carried out. The results studied in this paper provide a new idea and method for the finite element analysis of composite structure between engine cylinder head and head gasket.

Automotive valve springs occupy substantial space in the cylinder head of an internal combustion engine. In this paper, the design and analyses of a flat spring concept, known as flexure bearing are presented. Further, design approach, characteristics and parametric characterizations of a single-piece flexure bearing concept are outlined. Finite element analysis was used in examining the flexure bearing strength for different designs, materials and thicknesses. The results show that the maximum stress values are independent of the material types when the number of arm is three and above. The strain values are limited to less than 1% for all materials when the thickness is more than 1mm.  The results have provided characteristics for future selection of the flexure bearing in relation to the intended axial displacement.

A finite element analysis-computational fluid dynamics coupled analysis on the thermo-mechanical fatigue of cylinder head of a turbo-charged diesel engine was performed, and the complete simulation process is illustrated in this paper. In-cylinder combustion analysis and water jacket coolant flow analysis were conducted to provide heat transfer boundary conditions to the temperature field calculation of the cylinder head. Comparing with the conventional finite element analysis of cylinder head by which the heat transfer boundary conditions of the combustion and coolant sides are estimated, the present method coupled the three-dimensional combustion computational fluid dynamics and coolant computational fluid dynamics with the finite element analysis. Both computational fluid dynamics and finite element analysis obtain more accurate boundary conditions on their interface from each other, and thus, the present method improves accuracy of thermo-mechanical fatigue prediction. Based on the measured material performance parameters such as stress–strain curve under different temperatures and E–N curve, creep, and oxidation data material performance, the cylinder head–gasket–cylinder block finite element transient stress–strain field was calculated using ABAQUS. The thermo-mechanical fatigue analysis of cylinder head submodel was performed by using FEMFAT software that is based on the Sehitoglu model to predict the thermo-mechanical fatigue life of cylinder head. By comparing the measured and predicted temperatures of cylinder head, the temperature results showed a good agreement, and the error is less than 10%.

Considering the structure of some diesel engine cylinder head, its 3-D solid model and the finite element model is built, and after the load and constraint of is deal with, the stress and deformation the cylinder head with thermal-mechanical coupling is calculated with FEA ( Finite Element Analysis) software ABQUS. Analysis results find that: (1) the first main stress maximum value of cylinder head is up to 199.6MPa, which is less than 250MPa of the HT250 material ultimate tensile strength; (2) the deformation area is mainly in the flame face surface and fuel injector coxcombing, and the deformation of flame face is general symmetrical broadways and slightly large near the exhaust passage longways, while the deformation of fuel injector coxcombing is general symmetrical broadways and longways; (3) the structure design and strength of the cylinder head satisfy the design requirements.
