Intelligent product manuals are designed to allow product users to utilize a product as easily, effectively and with as little additional care as possible while minimizing support costs for manufacturers and suppliers. It is first shown how intelligent product manuals address these objectives by utilizing electronic, multimedia and knowledge-based technologies to provide active assistance to the user of the product during tasks such as installation, operation and maintenance. An architecture for the creation and deployment of an intelligent product manual is then proposed and general design considerations are outlined. Finally, four implementation approaches, based on XML, SGML, HTML and PDF technologies, are compared against a set of selection criteria. It is concluded that simple, low-cost solutions are available, which can provide significant benefits for appropriate businesses, including smaller companies.

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tearing is a common knee injury often requiring reconstruction with an autograft or an allograft. A prosthetic ligament replacement with off-the-shelf availability could potentially provide significant advantages over the current options for both patients and surgeons. Limitations of previous prosthetics include lack of biocompatibility and susceptibility to fatigue, creep, and failure of bony incorporation. This paper describes design considerations and possible improvements for the next generation prosthetic ACL. Design controls, as mandated by the FDA, are a systematic set of practices within the design and development process used to ensure that a new medical device meets the needs of the intended users. The specified requirements, called the design inputs, for a prosthetic ACL are discussed pertaining to material and structural properties, resistance to creep and fatigue, ability to support secure initial fixation, biocompatibility, and long-term osseointegration. Design innovations to satisfy the design inputs are discussed with regards to material selection, textile pattern, bone tunnel features, and short term fixation. A risk analysis is presented along with descriptions of proposed testing. Design control methodology and tissue engineering may be used to develop a next generation prosthetic ligament, solving multiple problems, simultaneously, on a holistic level, providing major improvements over earlier devices and current treatment options.

Subsea umbilicals are key part on the development of deep water fields. Generally, they are used to connect Platforms to all type of subsea equipment. Umbilicals’ component failure may result to great production losses. Traditionally, Petrobras uses thermoplastic hoses for chemical injection and control applications in its subsea systems; it has acquired a great deal of technical knowledge. Nevertheless, in recently presented layouts, the steel tubes have gained importance worldwide and this was due the increased water depth, integrity and higher pressure / higher temperature. This present paper makes a technical comparison between Steel Tube Umbilicals and Thermoplastic Hose Umbilicals with focus on Petrobras experience. The first part analyzes material selection criteria considering each structure type. Subjects such as material, welding and construction of both types are commented. This work also points to important subjects that suppliers must consider when designing and manufacturing umbilicals. The second part presents the Petrobras’ qualification tests of control umbilicals. Some of the tests that are used for steel tubes, thermoplastic hoses and high collapse resistant hoses are listed as well. On the third part, the focuses are the fatigue analysis, installation procedures and corrosion aspects. The work concludes listing some advantages and disadvantages when using Steel Tube Umbilicals or Thermoplastic Hoses Umbilicals, considering Petrobras scenarios.

It is likely that under modern-day conditions, design, designer and materials selection would follow a parallel continuum in a cycle. The attitude in materials selection confronts us as one of the substantial values directing the design. Therefore, it should be approached in certain criteria. Today, designers have to put emphasis on not only the setting and style of the space they are designing, but also on the relationship between the materials used and the environment at the same time. In our day, designers have an intense awareness on the use of renewable resources. Hence, it is obvious that a special importance should be given to the fact that the materials are in a cycle of sustainable and recycled. In this study, 15 design offices are asked the question of “what are the factors affecting your materials decisions and what are your selection criteria in general?” by using the interview technique. As a result of interviews conducted with design offices regarding their materials selection, many criteria are identified. It is seen that although sustainability is not clearly stated by designers among these criteria, it actively takes part in the content. In the light of answers provided and interviews, the relationship between materials selection criteria and sustainability will be examined over the standpoints of 12 offices that particularly mentioned the area of sustainability.
