Abstract Nowadays global engine construction gets significant progress at a technological level, but specified manufacturers do not release any information about the composition, the structure of the algorithms and the software used by their equipment. It is possible to obtain information only fragmentary and, for example, the description of the electronic control unit algorithm is completely missing. This is a barrier for small companies to improve and adjust existing engines for specific purposes. The present paper describes and develops algorithm synthesis for an electronic diesel engine regulator. Mathe-matical modelling of the automatic control system has been carried out within the framework of the research. The results of the research have demonstrated the efficiency and sustainability of automatic electronic control system using the proposed algorithm.

In this paper, the semi-physical simulation technology is introduced with the design and implementation of a semi-physical simulation test bench. A certain low-speed marine diesel engine of high pressure common rail (HPCR) electronic control system is taken as the subject of the test bench. In order to retain the functional and structural features of the HPCR electronic control system, the essential components are in consistent with the target engine, and some auxiliary parts are simplified and reformed. Specially, a real-time simulation model is built based on the principles of Mean Value Engine Model and cylinder moving method, which captures the requirements of ECU, such as the crank angle, the exhaust valve stroke signal, the scavenging pressure and so on. Therefore a closed-loop control system is accomplished including a real-time controller deployed in the simulation model, ECU and the executing agency of HPCR system. Additionally a monitoring management system is developed for the test bench with the functions of acquiring signals, monitoring parameters, storing data, alarming and etc. Finally, some tests are finished in the test bench and through analyzing the experimental results, the test bench can perform the characteristics and functions of the HPCR electronic control system. The semi-physical simulation technology can be used for the functional verification and performance test of HPCR electronic control system for the low-speed marine diesel engine.

Natural gas has been one of the most important kinds of vehicle fuel since the discovery of abundant shale gas storage. Operating costs of diesel engine can be reduced by replacing diesel with diesel-CNG dual fuel. The present contribution is mainly about the electronic control system of diesel-CNG dual fuel engine. Hardware and software of the electronic control system were designed. Two control strategies named equivalent power control strategy and diesel-saving control strategy were put forward for different control targets. Furthermore, these two strategies were testified by experiments conducted on engine test bench. Results show that average natural gas replacement could up to 70%. Comparing with diesel engine, fuel consumption of diesel-CNG dual fuel engine can be reduced significantly and the power increases slightly also. Both power and economy performances of the engine are improved.

A model of a diesel engine and its electronic control system was developed to investigate the engine behaviour in a vehicle simulation environment. The modelled quantities were brake torque, fuel consumption and exhaust gas temperature and were based on engine speed and pedal position. In order to describe these outputs the inlet air flow and boost pressure were also modelled and used as inner variables. The model was intended to be implemented on board a vehicle in a control unit which had limited computational performance. To keep the model as computationally efficient as possible the model basically consists of look-up tables and polynomials. First order systems were used to describe the dynamics of air flow and exhaust temperature. The outputs enable gear shift optimization over three variables, torque for vehicle acceleration, fuel consumption for efficiency and exhaust temperature to maintain high efficiency in the exhaust after treatment system. The engine model captures the low frequent dynamics of the modelled quantities in the closed loop of the engine and its electronic control system. The model only consists of three states, one for the pressure build up in the intake manifold and two states for modelling the exhaust temperature. The model was compared to measured data from an engine test cell (as got in INNOSON NIG. LTD.) and the mean absolute relative error were lower than 6.8%, 7.8% and 5.8% for brake torque, fuel consumption and exhaust gas temperature respectively. These results were considered good given the simplicity of the model.
