Instruments and systems developed at the Water Pollution Research Laboratory and elsewhere, for the continuous measurement of those parameters which are of most significance in water pollution research are discussed. Particular attention is given to instruments and systems which are also of value in sewage-works operation or in the water-quality monitoring stations now being set up by River Authorities and the Water Resources Board. Recent developments such as equipment for monitoring organic matter and ammonia are described and the commercial availability of equipment based on developments at the Laboratory indicated. The possible value in this context of the recently available specific-ion electrodes is also considered.
