For an engineering structure with an actual fatigue life over that corresponding to a so-called fatigue limit, appropriate reliability assessment and fatigue life prediction are essential for developing the structure and sustaining its high quality in service. Basic clues are explored. A competition fatigue initial mechanism is shown to provide a requirement of material primary quality management. Affordable deduced material and structural probabilistic S-N curves are presented by fitting into material mid-and-long life S-N data and fatigue limits and, then, comparing to structural fatigue limits. Random cyclic stress-strain relations are depicted for constructing random stressing history of structures. Reliability assessment and fatigue life prediction are established to synthetically consider the interference of applied stresses deduced from the random cyclic stress-strain relations and capacity strengths derived from the structural S-N relations with an expected life. Affordable and appropriate method has been then developed to realize the reliability assessment and fatigue life prediction including the super long life regime. Availability of the present method has been indicated through a reliability analysis to the velocity related reliabilities and fatigue lives of a railway axle.

This paper presents a study on the fatigue life prediction of notched fiber-reinforced 2060 Al-Li alloy laminates under spectrum loading by applying the constant life diagram. Firstly, a review on the state of the art of constant life diagram models for the life prediction of composite materials is given, which highlights the effect on the forecast accuracy. Then, the fatigue life of notched fiber-reinforced Al-Li alloy laminates (2/1 laminates and 3/2 laminates) is tested under cyclic stress, which has different stress cycle characteristics (constant amplitude loading and Mini-Twist spectrum loading). The introduced models are successfully realized based on the available experimental data of examined laminates. In the case of Mini-Twist spectrum loading, the effect of the constant life diagram on the life prediction accuracy of examined laminates is studied based on the rainflow-counting method and Miner damage criteria. The results show that the simple Goodman model and piecewise linear model have certain advantages compared to other complex models for the life prediction of notched fiber metal laminates with different structures under Mini-Twist loading. From the engineering perspective, the S-N curve prediction based on the piecewise linear model is most applicable and accurate among all the models.

An incremental plasticity model is proposed based on the von-Mises yield condition, associated flow rule, and nonlinear kinematic hardening rule. In the present model, fatigue life prediction requires only the uniaxial cycle stress-strain curve and the uniaxial fatigue test results on smooth specimens. Experimental data of 304 stainless steel and 1045 carbon steel were used to validate this analytical model. It is shown that a reasonable description of steady-state hysteresis stress-strain loops and prediction of fatigue lives under various combined axial-torsional loadings are given by this model

The influence of residual stesses must be considered in bending fatigue life prediction of fillet rolling crankshafts. In this paper, the stress/strain distributions near fillet during fatigue tests are calculated by finite element method. In residual stress computation, the three dimensional flexible contact model is adopted, and in bending strain computation, the static analysis are selected. Then, bending fatigue life prediction is performed by local stress-strain approach based on the residual stess and bending strain amplitude, and the results agree with the bending fatigue test.
