An Advanced Radiotracer Technique for Assessing and Plotting Oil Consumption in Diesel and Gasoline Engines

Lower emissions, reduced friction and low lubricant oil consumption are the main drivers for new gasoline engines. In terms of piston ring pack, the trend is to reduce ring tangential load and width. On the other hand, the main concern is to have proper ring conformability and lube oil control. This work presents the comparison of a baseline ring pack with a low friction pack in terms of friction, blow-by control and lube oil consumption. Besides ring width and tangential load reductions, evaluations of ring materials are also carried out. Narrow compression rings, 1.0 and 0.8 mm, were engine tested. PVD top ring was also tested and showed about 10% friction reduction compared to the usual Gas Nitrided one. 3-piece 1.5 mm oil rings were compared with the usual 2.0 mm ones. Being more flexible, the narrower oil rings can have same conformability with reduced tangential load. Friction was measured in the mono-cylinder SI Floating Liner engine at 5 operational conditions. Effect of cylinder roughness on friction is discussed by reciprocating bench tests. Compared with a typical 1.2/1.2/2.0 mm SI ring pack, the proposed 1.0/1.0/1.5 mm pack brought about 28% reduction in ring friction in the tested conditions, which would mean in about 1% of fuel savings in urban use.

Nowadays, the creation of remotely-piloted aerial vehicles for various purposes is regarded as one of the most relevant and promising trends of aircraft development. FAU "25 State Research Institute of Chemmotology of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation" have studied the operation features of aircraft piston engines and developed technical requirements for motor oil for piston four-stroke UAV engines, as well as a new engine oil M-5z/20 AERO in cooperation with NPP KVALITET, LLC. Based on the complex of qualification tests, the stated operational properties of the experimental-industrial batch of M-5z/20 AERO oil are generally confirmed.

Olea europaea cultivar, native in the Mediterranean basin, has expanded worldwide, mainly due to the olive oil industry. This expansion is attributed to the benefits of olive oil consumption, since this product is rich in nutritional and bioactive compounds. However, the olive industry generates high amounts of wastes, which could be related to polluting effects on soil and water. To minimize the environmental impact, different strategies of revalorization have been proposed. In this sense, the aim of this work was to develop high cosmetic value added oleuropein-enriched extracts (O20 and O30), a bioactive compound from olive byproducts, performing a comprehensive characterization using high performance liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry and evaluate their bioactivity by in vitro assays. A total of 49 compounds were detected, with oleuropein and its derivatives widely found in O30 extract, whereas iridoids were mainly detected in O20 extract. Moreover, 10 compounds were detected for the first time in olive leaves. Both extracts demonstrated strong antioxidant and antiradical activities, although O30 showed higher values. In addition, radical oxygen and nitrogen species scavenging and enzyme inhibition values were higher in O30, with the exception of HOCl and hyaluronidase inhibition assays. Regarding cell viability, olive byproduct extracts did not lead to a decrease in keratinocytes viability until 100 µg/mL. All data reported by the present study reflect the potential of industrial byproducts as cosmetic ingredients.
