Performance of Aircraft Spark-Ignition Engines with Fuel Injection

As these two volumes are complementary to each other it is convenient to consider them together, and no doubt most students of fuel injection as applied to spark ignition engines would prefer to read them as a unit. The two volumes concentrate on the motor industry applications, but Vol. 3 has two chapters on the use of fuel injection in aero engines.

Engine exhaust emission limits have been subject to increasingly severe controls during the last few years. This has led to the need for a suitably structured systemic approach to the problem of exhaust gas treatment, instead of just focusing on improving catalytic converters efficiency, in other words, it has become increasingly more productive, and necessary, to carry out “global” optimization of the chemical conversion process generally present when gases are burnt, along with activities aimed directly at reduce the cause of their creation, acting on the engine geometric and operating parameters. This work was aimed at an operating experimental analysis of alternative fuel injection systems to optimize their use in order to reduce exhaust emissions in spark ignition engines, especially during cold starts in low temperature conditions.

In this paper, a feedforward—feedback control is developed for the air—fuel ratio (AFR) of spark ignition engines using neural network estimators. To maintain the AFR at stoichiometric value, the throttle angle change is seen as a disturbance, from which the air flowrate is predicted. The injected fuel is also predicted using the inverse of the fuel injection dynamics. The proposed method is evaluated on an engine simulation benchmark and the performance is shown much improved over proportional—integral control. The new method needs moderate computation and therefore has strong potential to be used in production engines.
