Professor Hiroshi Okada and his team from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Science and Technology, Tokyo University of Science, Japan, are engaged in the field of computational fracture mechanics. This is an area of computational engineering that refers to the creation of numerical methods to approximate the crack evolutions predicted by new classes of fracture mechanics models. For many years, it has been used to determine stress intensity factors and, more recently, has expanded into the simulation of crack nucleation and propagation. In their work, the researchers are proposing new methods for fracture mechanics analysis and solid mechanics analysis.

In order to explore influence on tribological behavior of PEEK composite film layer in PEEK-PTFE composite radial alumina ball bearings, rolling contact fatigue tests were performed by using the PEEK bearing’s inner rings with the artificial defects in dry condition. When rotation speed and applied load were 600 rpm and 98 N, the number of cycles of the PEEK-PTFE bearings reached 1.0×107 fatigue cycles. The artificial defects with 0.02 mm depth on the raceway surface of the PEEK inner ring was covered with PEEK composite film accumulation.

Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is a tough semi-crystalline thermoplastic polymer with excellent mechanical properties. While abilities of polyphenylenesulfide (PPS) are similar to PEEK, former material cost was lower than later. Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is well known because of its low friction coefficient and self lubrication ability. The objective of this study is to observe the friction coefficient of hybrid bearings, PTFE retainer sandwiched with PPS-races or PEEK-races. Rolling contact fatigue tests were performed and in situ friction forces wear measured. It is concluded that the PTFE retainer reduced friction coefficient.

7075-T6 aluminium alloy is commonly adopted in high performance structures and components. Its fatigue behaviour is however dramatically worsened by exposure to aggressive environments. The deposition of PVD coatings, which are commonly adopted to increase the surface properties of structural elements in terms of hardness, contact fatigue and wear resistance, could be beneficial also for the fatigue behaviour of a 7075-T6 substrate in an aggressive environment. In the present work, Diamond Like Carbon (DLC) PVD coated 7075-T6 specimens immersed in methanol have been analysed, by means of step-loading rotating bending fatigue tests (R = -1) at 2·105 cycles. Coated specimens were tested in laboratory air for comparison, and uncoated polished samples were studied in both the environments to obtain reference values. SEM micrographs of the fracture surfaces were taken to investigate the effects of the corrosive environment on the failure mechanism.
