Rolling contact fatigue depends essentially on both surface and subsurface populations of defects. First, this paper describes experimental results obtained in rolling contact fatigue tests in the presence of a furrow oriented transversally to the race-way. Then an attempt to predict theoretically the effect of geometric parameters of the furrow upon contact fatigue life is described.

The paper considers the effect of lubricant viscosity, ν, on the contact fatigue life, N, in gearing applications. More than 40 sets of the thermal non-Newtonian EHL numerical calculations and six sets of disc fatigue tests under the conditions ranging from the mixed to full film lubrication are used. The results show that for improving gearing fatigue life it is generally useful to increase lubricant viscosity. But it is not simply the case that the higher the lubricant viscosity, the better. When lubricant viscosity, ν, is less than a critical value, νcr, a quantitative relation of is seen in the test results; When ν > νcr, however, increasing lubricant viscosity is found to reduce the fatigue life. Based on this result, the paper raises questions concerning the accuracy of the lubrication factor recommended by ISO/6336:1996.

The fatigue life of rolling-element bearings has been the subject of numerous investigations. Most recently the influence of the lubricant on fatigue failure has been given added emphasis. This paper presents the results of an investigation which was undertaken in order to gain a better understanding of fluid behavior in the contact zone and to determine the influence of the lubricant on rolling contact fatigue life. The investigation had three distinct facets: (a) An analysis was performed on pressure and temperature distribution within the contact zone of rolling disks. In the analysis Reynolds, energy, and elasticity equations were solved simultaneously and fluid properties, such as viscosity dependence on temperature and pressure were included. (b) Dynamic stresses in two contacting cylindrical bodies were measured by means of photoelastic techniques. These measurements were used to test the validity of the analytically predicted stress distribution. (c) High-speed ball-bearing fatigue tests were conducted with two specially blended oils which had the same viscosity at the bearing inlet temperature, but widely different pressure viscosity characteristics. The physical characteristics of the oils were the same as those considered in the analysis. The paper summarizes the work and presents a hypothesis for the failure mechanism.

The contact fatigue tests were carried out using three kind of steel(45, 42CrMo, 40CrNi2Mo) which were quenched and tempered to the same medium hardness(HRC37±1). The experimental equipment is JPM-1 type contact fatigue tester. During the experiment process, the contact stress is 1600MPa and the surface roughness is 0.4 um. The crack initiation and the crack propagation direction were observed by using SEM. The contact fatigue failure mechanism was also analyzed. The experimental results were analyzed by using Weibull distribution. The experimental results show that the contact fatigue crack was initiated in the roller surface. With increasing of the cycle, the initiated crack propagates into subsurface and becomes to pitting. The pitting becomes bigger and bigger and leads to failure finally. The maximum shear stress is the main driving force for the crack propagation. The contact fatigue life increases in sequence of 45, 42CrMo, 40CrNi2Mo. The contact fatigue life has the relationship with the shearing resistant stress Тk. About the same carbon content, the value of the shearing resistant stress Тk becomes greater with increasing the alloying elements. The best material used for making heavy duty gear is 40CrNi2Mo steel.

The take-up winder is an important equipment of chemical fiber textile machinery. Vibration performance is the key to decide quality and service life of product. The modal of winder is analyzed. It is shown that the rotation speed cannot be kept away from fifth and sixth resonance frequency. The Maximum stress response is calculated by harmonic analysis. According to results of high-cycle fatigue tests, the service life of winder is evaluated. The results show that there is the risk of fatigue damage for small damp ratio. Unlimited fatigue life can be obtained by creasing damp ratio. It can be concluded that creasing damp is an effective way to improve the service life.

This work is within an ongoing study, which aims to propose a new methodology for fatigue life analysis of steel pipelines with plain dents under cyclic internal pressure. This methodology follows the current high cycle fatigue theory and employs stress concentration factors induced by plain dents to modify standard S-N curves. A previously developed and validated finite element model is extended to generate stress concentration factors for longitudinal and transverse dents, in addition to spherical dents. Several finite element analyses are carried out in a parametric study to evaluate stress concentration factors induced by the three dent types studied: spherical, longitudinal and transverse dents. Analytical expressions are developed to estimate stress concentration factors for these three dent types as function of pipe and dent geometric parameters. Small-scale fatigue tests are conducted to evaluate the finite life behavior of dented steel pipes under cyclic internal pressure. The methodology is validated in view of the fatigue tests results. Including expressions to estimate stress concentration factors for three different dent types (spherical, longitudinal and transverse dents), the proposed methodology can then be used for fatigue life analysis of dented steel pipelines under cyclic internal pressure.

A contact fatigue life analysis method for multiroller traction drives is presented. The method is based on the Lundberg-Palmgren analysis method for rolling element bearing life prediction, and also uses life adjustment factors for materials, processing, lubrication, and effect of traction. The analysis method is applied in an optimization study to the multiroller traction drive, consisting of a single-stage planetary configuration with two rows of stepped planet rollers of five rollers per row. The drive was approximately 25 centimeters in diameter by 11 centimeters long, having a nominal ratio of 15:1. The theoretically predicted drive life was 2510 hours at a nominal continuous power and speed of 74.6 kW (100 hp) and 75,000 rpm.

Besides primarily carrying radial load, cylindrical roller bearings with flanges or lips on both inner and outer raceways need also carry axial load in some applications. Because of the axial load, the equivalent dynamic load of the bearing will be increased and the bearing contact fatigue life will be decreased accordingly. The axial load effect on the roller bearing fatigue life had been studied by researchers in the past. Because of different assumptions used in their models, quite different predictions were made in their analysis. This work combines the methods used in the Fernlund-Synek and Brandlein models and studies general contact conditions such as partial contact along the roller length, partial loading zone of the bearing race, manufacturing tolerance and running-in effects on roller length, etc. New formulas for equivalent dynamic loads of the rotating and stationary races are derived. A fatigue limit load is also included in the life calculation to reflect the latest development in contact fatigue life analysis.

The contact fatigue life of gears has direct influences on the working life of the double-sided grinding machine, in the actual using process, the contact fatigue life of gears cannot meet the requirements of working because of many factors. This paper uses the finite element software ANSYS, establishs the two-dimensional model of gears, and analyzes and calculates it, the research shows that: life expectancy of gears is 2.13 years, so gears should have carburizing or carbonitriding heat treatment to fit process requirements, gears can live up to 5.82 years, it can fit the technological requirements of gear life of 5 years. It is some practical value for increasing the working life of the double-sided grinding machine and improving the stability and accuracy of the whole machine.
