Absorption Characteristics

In this paper, energy absorption characteristics of PVB laminated windshield subject to human head impact are studied. SHPB method is carried out to obtain the constitutive relationships of PVB laminated glass in dynamic behavior. With the SHPB results embedded, finite element simulation is used to study the dynamic behavior of PVB laminated windshield. In particular, energy absorption characteristics are investigated. Two parameters for measuring the energy absorption property of windshield are suggested, i.e. loss of head velocity and HIC value and a parametric study is carried out to see the effect of impact velocity and impact position. Results can shed lights on the research of energy absorption capability of PVB laminated windshield.

Nowadays, the number of people practising contact sports has increased. In many of them, using head protective equipment is not mandatory, even if the use of headbands could increase the level of safety regarding several types of traumatic brain injuries. Many commercial solutions are currently available, based on plastic-based foams providing a decent level of protection and comfort to the user. This work introduces the use of agglomerated cork as an eco-friendly alternative to synthetic foams but at least keeping safety levels. Cork is a natural cellular material that has been showing excellent crashworthiness properties. In this study, cork agglomerate density is carefully chosen to be incorporated into a protective headband. Results are compared against three other commercial headbands. For each one, the risk of brain injury was analysed for different injury thresholds and impact energies. The results clearly demonstrate that the cork-based apparel may provide comparable, and in some cases, better performances, outlasting the commercial ones.

Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) is a common material used to manufacture the inner foam liner of a bicycle helmet due to its outstanding energy absorption characteristics and light-weight property. The current research presents a novel corrugated expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam design concept which is used to enhance the impact dissipation of bicycle helmets from the safety standpoint to reduce head injuries and make them lighter. The baseline comparison study under impact for different foam configurations is compared with a conventional EPS foam sample without corrugation. Corrugated foam designs under current investigation are 12.5–20% lighter and provide up to 10% higher energy absorption. The details of the novel manufacturing concept, CPSC 1203 helmet impact tests, high-speed camera study to understand the differences in the failure mechanisms are deliberated in this paper.
