The annealing of semiconductors by use of short, Q-switched laser radiation pulses has been intensively studied over the last few years. The basic mechanism underlying the annealing behaviour is transient (⁓-5-500nsec) surface melting. Melt depths are typically 100-5000Å and high resoldification velocities in a range from less than 1m/s to greater than 20m/s are achievable. These velocities are about five or six orders of magnitude greater than those attained during, for example, conventional crystal growth. Therefore, new high speed solidification phenomena are now amenable to study. The present paper will focus on the behaviour observed under the most extreme conditions and, indeed, crystal growth breakdown and amorphization processes will be described. The solidification characteristics of elemental Si will be compared with those of other semiconductors; namely the compound materials GaAs and GaP. The fundamental role of electron microscope studies in this work will be emphasized.

AbstractWhitehouse adapts insights from evolutionary anthropology to interpret extreme self-sacrifice through the concept of identity fusion. The model neglects the role of normative systems in shaping behaviors, especially in relation to violent extremism. In peaceful groups, increasing fusion will actually decrease extremism. Groups collectively appraise threats and opportunities, actively debate action options, and rarely choose violence toward self or others.
