AbstractBioactivity of mulberry has been widely described, but mostly related to its fruits, while studies with leaves are scarce. Herein, in this study leaves of two mulberry species (Morus alba L. and Morus nigra L.) were characterized, compared, and evaluated in terms of their phenolic composition and antioxidant activity. Aiming to valorize mulberry leaves extracts which can be included in modern diet four different extracts (infusions, decoctions, tinctures and hydromethanolic) were examined. The chemical characterization was done by quantifying total phenolics (TPC), flavonoids (TFC) and phenolic acids (TPAC) content, L( +)ascorbic acid (ASA) and individual phenolic compounds in the extracts by HPLC technique. Moreover, DPPH and FRAP assays were used to assess the antioxidant activity of white and black mulberry leaves. Findings of these studies revealed that black mulberry leaves were richer in TFC and TPAC, while white mulberry leaves contained higher levels of individual phenolic compounds in water extracts. Gallic acid was found in the highest concentrations in two mulberry leave extracts. Correlation analysis showed strong relationships between antioxidant activity and TPC and TFC. This fact suggests the crucial role of phenolic compounds as antioxidant agents in white and black mulberry leaves. The results obtained in this study demonstrate that leaves of both white and black mulberry can be used as a valuable source of phenolic compounds with bioactive potential, which can be applied in the food sector, as foods and as promising source of natural ingredients.

Background: The obesity remains a pathology today which expands. It leads in its wake much pathology with very serious consequences. It is therefore necessary to take steps to curb this nutritional pathology. Thus, two plant species including Carapa procera and Corchorus olitorius have been tested to assess their effect on this pathology.Methods: Aqueous extracts of Carapa procera bark and Corchorus olitorius roots were tested on rats and biochemical parameters were evaluated. Besides, a chemical characterization was led.Results: These plant extracts contain bioactive molecules that have a regressive activity on the plasma levels of cholesterol, triglyceride and LDL-cholesterol. These bioactive molecules increase the level of HDL-cholesterol. These 2 species are non-toxic on renal, hepatic and pancreatic functions in view of the values of urea, creatinine and blood glucose.Conclusions: Of these 2 extracts, the aqueous extract of Corchorus olitorius is more active.

In this study, the aqueous and ethanolic extracts (leaves, stems and fruits) from Morus alba L., a traditional Chinese medicine, were evaluated for their antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. Ethanolic extracts showed higher contents of both total phenolics and flavonoids than aqueous extracts. The total phenolic content was in the order of: leaf extracts > fruit extracts > stem extracts, whereas the total flavonoids was: leaf extracts > stem extracts > fruit extracts. Using DPPH assays, the concentrations providing 50% inhibition (IC50) values of aqueous extracts from leaves, stems and fruits were 7.11 ± 1.45 mg/ml, 86.78 ± 3.21 mg/ml and 14.38 ± 2.83 mg/ml, respectively, whereas the IC50 values of ethanolic extracts were 3.11 ± 0.86 mg/ml, 14.62 ± 2.45 mg/ml and 12.42 ± 2.76 mg/ml, respectively. In sum, the antioxidant activities of ethanolic extracts from M. alba L. were stronger than the aqueous extracts, and in the order of: leaf extracts > fruit extracts > stem extracts. The ethanolic extracts exhibited moderate antimicrobial activities, whereas the aqueous extracts showed poor antimicrobial properties in our test system. This study validated the medicinal potential of M. alba L.

Ethanolic and aqueous extracts of the “bee glue” Propolis exhibit antioxidative properties and are used as antiinflammatory drugs in folk medicine. In order to standardize the principle activities of prominent components of these extracts, simple biochemical tests have been introduced in the preceding paper. These activity tests prove the high antioxidative and inhibitory capacities of aqueous and ethanolic extracts of propolis in vitro. In the present communication we report on experiments documenting photodynamic quenching properties of these extracts. Using riboflavin, rose bengal or hematoporphyrin as photoactivators and ketomethyl-thiobutyric acid or crocin as indicators, the protective functions of propolis preparations can be demonstrated. The results indicate that the aqueous extracts are more active than the corresponding ethanolic preparation.

Lithotrophic bacterial leaching of heavy metals from dredged sediments was studied in semi-pilot scale air-lift bioreactors. Prior to the bioleaching experiments, a physico-chemical characterization of the sediments comprising a sequential extraction study was conducted. The sediments turned out to be highly loaded with heavy metals, and with the exception of managanese, mainly associated to the oxidizable fraction of the sediments and thus strongly linked to the latter. The heavy metals could be classified by decreasing order of mobility as follows: Mn>Zn>Cu>Cd>Pb. The bacterial leaching was found to be strongly dependent on the nature of the mineral substrate. Sulfur gave the best solubilization results in comparison with reduced iron or with a combination of reduced iron and sulfur. In the presence of oxygen, lithotrophic bacteria oxidized sulfur into sulfates and induced an acidification of the sediments. These conditions led to the release of the metals that were tightly linked to the sediments, that is those associated with the sulfides and/or with the organic matter. With sulfur as a substrate, the solubilization percentages varied within 30 days between 72 and 93% of the total sediment content (wt/wt) for cadmium, copper, manganese and zinc. Much lower biosolubilization percentages were obtained in the case of lead because of the poor solubility of lead sulfate.
