Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to use PAM-CRASH, a finite element analysis solver, to assess the performance of a mass production vehicle cross car beam (CCB) under an overlap frontal crash scenario (crashworthiness). Simulation results were reviewed according to what is plausible to register regarding some critical points displacements and, moreover, to identify its stress concentrations zones. Furthermore, it was also computed the CCB modal analysis (noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) assessment) in order to examine if its natural modes are within with the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) design targets. Design/methodology/approach – The available data at the beginning of the present study consisted of the structure CAD file and performance requirements stated by the OEM for NVH. No technical information was available concerning crashworthiness. Taking into account these limitations, it was decided to adapt the requirements for other mass production cars of the same category, as regards dynamic loading. A dynamic explicit code finite element analysis was performed throughout the CCB structure simulating the 120e−3 s crash event. For the modal analysis, there were some necessary modifications to the explicit finite element model in order to perform the analysis in implicit code. In addition, the car body in white stiffness was assigned at the boundaries. These stiffness values are withdrawn from the points where the CCB is attached to the car body’s sheet metal components. Findings – Although the unavailability of published results for this particular CCB model prevents a comparison of the present results, the trends and order of magnitude of the crash simulation results are within the expectations for this type of product. Concerning modal analysis, the steering column first natural frequency has a percent deviation from the design lower bound value of 5.09 percent when local body stiffness is considered and of 1.94 percent with fixed boundary conditions. The other requirement of the NVH assessment regarding a 5 Hz minimum interval between first vehicle CCB mode and the first mode of the steering column was indeed achieved with both boundary configurations. Originality/value – This study is a further confirmation of the interest of numerical modeling as a first step before actual experimental testing, saving time and money in an automotive industry that has seen an enormous increase of the demand for new car models in the last decade.

This article make a research based on a certain type of heavy vehicle, In the research, we have made some analyses on structure reliability of the heavy truck with the assistance of some simulation platforms, such as computer aided design, finite element analysis, etc.. Based on the establishment of a correct finite element analysis model, analysis method is mainly about some research of the frame, such as typical working conditions of static analysis and modal analysis. Through these work, we can have a better understanding about the static and dynamic characteristic of the frame, so that we can find out the advantages and disadvantages of the car.

Due to business development, a Shipyard Co., Ltd. in Guangdong planned to remould a double girder gantry crane of MG32/10-37A5 (32t-37m) into a type of 20t-37m and to heighten 6m lifting height of structure. A Cranes Machinery Co., LTD. in Guangzhou undertook this job. After the completion of transformation for the crane, the serious laterodeviations of the crane were found in operational process, which affected its safety use. This paper used a finite ANSYS to perform the modal analysis of the crane before and after reconstruction. The results show that the dynamic stiffness of the remoulded crane was reduced obviously. For the reason, the four reinforcement schemes of the crane were put forward by the Cranes Machinery Co., LTD.. This study again performed the model analysis for the schemes and selected an optimal one by calculation, analysis and contrast, which has successfully solved the above problem. The present results can provide a reference for solving similar problems in the future.

Abstract: The Federation Internationale de L’Autobile (FIA) has been working on improving safety of drivers in open wheel racing series. Numerous incidents caused serious impacts on drivers’ lives. The car-to-car collision, car to environment collision and injuries due to flying debris are common threats to these drivers. In 2016 the introduction of Halo surrounding the cockpit was appreciated by the FIA. The following study includes the analysis of this Halo system using Finite Element Analysis (FEA). The dynamic, static and modal analysis is carried out with the help of Simscale software and the results obtained showed the values under permissible levels. Abstract The paper deals with improvements of accuracy of structural dynamic calculations by using both the advantages of Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Experimental Modal Analysis (EMA). The basis for such improvements are reasonable mechanical and numerical models and accurate frequency response measurements (eigenfrequencies and mode shapes). The paper deals first with reasons for and estimations of errors in numerical and experimental analysis. It can be shown by theory and experiment that neither FEA nor EMA models are unique, due to inevitable incompleteness of the mode shapes and eigenfrequencies from a vibration test. Verification and updating of FE models by linking FEA with EMA are discussed in the paper and mainly focussed on FE models with a large number of degrees of freedom. Hence an update method has been introduced, which leads to an improved model in a relatively small quantity of computer time. It can be shown, that based on measured eigenfrequencies and calculated eigenvectors, an updating of FE-models for real engineering problems, by changing the mass matrix only, is a very efficient procedure with a surprisingly good quality updated model.

A star sprocket is an important component of U-shaped slide chain conveyor, so it is particularly important to be analyzed. It conducts modal analysis of star sprocket by using large finite element analysis software, ANSYS, calculates natural frequencies of the first five and the corresponding modes and analyzes natural frequency affected by sprocket tooth thickness. The result provides basic theory for dynamic optimization analysis of U-shaped slide chain conveyor.
