Vortex induced vibration or widely known as VIV, is a very complex hydrodynamic phenomenon. There are relatively very few experimental and numerical references for oscillating pair of cylinders because of the early assumption that the interference between the two cylinders is weak and thus each of the cylinders may have the same behavior as found in the case of a single cylinder, but recent researches showed this assumption was not true. For tandem arrangement, several parameters govern the nature of VIV of downstream cylinders, such as spacing, upstream cylinders VIV amplitude etc. The nature of downstream cylinders response isn’t same as classical VIV or WIV (wake induced vibration). Oscillation frequency of a cylinder subjected to flow induced vibration is one of the important characteristics Oscillation frequency is highly dependent on natural frequency of the cylinder. By changing spring stiffness or mass ratio, natural frequency can be altered. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of upstream cylinder’s oscillation frequency on the vibration of downstream cylinder. Numerical simulations have been conducted to understand the nature of vortex induced vibration (VIV) of a pair cylinder in tandem arrangement at high Reynolds numbers. Cylinders were subjected to uniform flows in sub-critical flow regime and have been allowed to oscillate in cross flow direction only. The spacing between the upstream and downstream cylinders was four times of the cylinder diameter. The oscillation frequency of the upstream cylinder has been altered by varying the mass ratio of the upstream cylinder. It was found that for same Reynolds number, downstream cylinder’s VIV amplitude is increased quite significantly if the upstream cylinder oscillates relatively slowly. The shear stress transport detached eddy turbulence model has been used for simulating the turbulent flow around the two cylinders. An advanced mesh movement known as “mesh morphing” model was employed to lessen the requirement for re-meshing which help to increase the accuracy of the prediction. Calculation of accurate results due to large domain deformations was achieved by re-positioning existing mesh points. The numerical results of a single cylinder subjected to one degree of freedom (1DOF) vibration have been compared with the available experimental results to validate the present study. The study is important in terms of designing VIVACE (Vortex Induced Vibration for Aquatic Clean Energy) converter for low speed current. In recent past, multiple cylinders have been used for VIVACE converter. So, the study of VIV of two equal-diameter cylinders in tandem arrangement at low current speed is very significant.

A numerical study of the flow-induced vibration of two elastically mounted cylinders in tandem and staggered arrangements at Reynolds number $Re=200$ is presented. The cylinder centres are set at a streamwise distance of 1.5 cylinder diameters, placing the rear cylinder in the near-wake region of the front cylinder for the tandem arrangement. The cross-stream or lateral offset is varied between 0 and 5 cylinder diameters. The two cylinders are identical, with the same elastic mounting, and constrained to oscillate only in the cross-flow direction. The variation of flow behaviours is examined for static cylinders and for elastic mountings of a range of spring stiffnesses, or reduced velocity. At least seven major modes of flow response are identified, delineated by whether the oscillation is effectively symmetric, and the strength of the influence of the flow through the gap between the two cylinders. Submodes of these are also identified based on whether or not the flow remains periodic. More subtle temporal behaviours, such as period doubling, quasi-periodicity and chaos, are also identified and mapped. Across all of these regimes, the amplitudes of vibration and the magnitude of the fluid forces are quantified. The modes identified span the parameter space between two important limiting cases: two static bodies at varying lateral offset; and two elastically mounted bodies in a tandem configuration at varying spring stiffnesses. Some similarity in the response of extremely stiff or static bodies and extremely slack bodies is shown. This is explained by the fact that the slack bodies are free to move to an equilibrium position and stop, effectively becoming a static system. However, the most complex behaviour appears between these limits, when the bodies are in reasonably close proximity, and the natural structural frequency is close to the vortex shedding frequency of a single cylinder. This appears to be driven by the interplay between a series of time scales, including the vortex formation time, the advection time across the gap between the cylinders and the oscillation period of both bodies. This points out an important difference between this multi-body system and the classic single-cylinder vortex-induced vibration: two bodies in close proximity will not oscillate in a synchronised, periodic manner when their natural structural frequencies are close to the nominal vortex shedding frequency of a single cylinder.

The effects of operational modes on the removal of a synthetic organic chemical (SOC) in natural water by powdered activated carbon (PAC) during ultrafiltration (UF) were studied, through model simulations and experiments. The removal percentage of the trace SOC was independent of its influent concentration for a given PAC dose. The minimum PAC dosage required to achieve a desired effluent concentration could quickly be optimized from the C/C0 plot as a function of the PAC dosage. The cross-flow operation was not advantageous over the dead-end regarding the SOC removal. Added PAC was re-circulated as a suspension in the UF loop for only a short time even under the cross-flow velocity of gt; 1.0 m/s. The cross-flow condition did not contribute much to the suspending of PAC. The pulse PAC addition at the beginning of a filtration cycle resulted in somewhat better SOC removal than the continuous PAC addition. The increased NOM loading on PAC which was dosed in a pulse and stayed longer in the UF loop could possibly further decrease the adsorption rate.

ABSTRACT This paper proposes an alternating elliptical impingement chamber in the leading edge of a gas turbine to restrain the cross flow and enhance the heat transfer, and investigates the detailed flow and heat transfer characteristics. The chamber consists of straight sections and transition sections. Numerical simulations are performed by solving the three-dimensional (3D) steady Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) equations with the Shear Stress Transport (SST) k– $\omega$ turbulence model. The influences of alternating the cross section on the impingement flow and heat transfer of the chamber are studied by comparison with a smooth semi-elliptical impingement chamber at a cross-flow Velocity Ratio (VR) of 0.2 and Temperature Ratio (TR) of 1.00 in the primary study. Then, the effects of the cross-flow VR and TR are further investigated. The results reveal that, in the semi-elliptical impingement chamber, the impingement jet is deflected by the cross flow and the heat transfer performance is degraded. However, in the alternating elliptical chamber, the cross flow is transformed to a pair of longitudinal vortices, and the flow direction at the centre of the cross section is parallel to the impingement jet, thus improving the jet penetration ability and enhancing the impingement heat transfer. In addition, the heat transfer in the semi-elliptical chamber degrades rapidly away from the stagnation region, while the longitudinal vortices enhance the heat transfer further, making the heat transfer coefficient distribution more uniform. The Nusselt number decreases with increase of VR and TR for both the semi-elliptical chamber and the alternating elliptical chamber. The alternating elliptical chamber enhances the heat transfer and moves the stagnation point up for all VR and TR, and the heat transfer enhancement is more obvious at high cross-flow velocity ratio.
