This overview study set out to compare and synthesise the findings of review studies conducted on predicting student academic performance (SAP) in higher education using educational data mining (EDM) methods, EDM algorithms and EDM tools from 2013 to June 2020. It conducted multiple searches for suitable and relevant peer-reviewed articles on two online search engines, on nine online databases, and on two online academic social networks. It, then, selected 26 eligible articles from 2,050 articles. Some of the findings of this overview study are worth mentioning. First, only 2 studies explicitly stated their precise sample sizes with maths and science as the two most mentioned subject areas. Second, 16 review studies had purposes related to either EDM techniques, EDM methods, EDM models, or EDM algorithms employed to predict SAP and student success in the higher education sector. Third, there are six commonly used typologies of input variables reported by 26 review studies, of which student demographics was the most commonly utilised variable for predicting SAP. Fourth and last, seven common EDM algorithms employed for predicting SAP were identified, of which Decision Tree emerged both as the most used algorithm and as the algorithm with the highest prediction accuracy rate for predicting SAP.

The Relationship

The relationship between the occurrence of otitis media with effusion during the first 3 years of life and subsequent verbal and academic performance was examined in 61 socioeconomically disadvantaged children who attended a research day-care program. Study children were participants in a longitudinal study of child development in which the number of episodes of otitis media and duration of each otitis episode were reported prospectively from infancy. The incidence of otitis media was highest during the first 2 years of life. Bilateral otitis media accounted for 66% of the days with otitis media with effusion. Standardized tests of intelligence and academic performance were administered to the children when they were 3½ to 6 years of age. No evidence of associations between measures of early childhood otitis media experience and these measures of verbal or academic functioning was found in this study population.

The mental health of the men and women who served in the U.S. Armed Forces is an area of great concern in the United States. Studies have shown the mental health of university students is also a concern with a growing need for support services and prevention measures. The main objective of this study was to determine the effects of participation in particular greenhouse activities on depression, anxiety, and stress levels of students who served in the U.S. Armed Forces. The study included a control group and a treatment group. Participants completed a pre- and post 21-item Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-21) survey, along with a questionnaire designed to capture participants’ demographic information and information regarding their military service history. The treatment consisted of a 6-week indoor plant care program. Results of the study found that student veterans who participated in the plant care class had decreased levels of depression and stress when compared with the control group. In the post-test open-ended questions, student veterans described a noticeable feeling of reduced stress along with the ability to relax while having feelings of a sense of place (belonging). Participants also indicated that they would continue to grow plants as a hobby.

Respiratory care in Poland is a relatively new service addressed to carers of dependent people, whose priority objective is to relieve caregivers in their daily care activities for disabled (dependent) people. The Ministry of Family, Labour and Social Policy proposes the “Respiratory care” program, which is implemented as part of the Solidarity Fund for the Support of People with Disabilities by municipalities and counties. The following study indicates the main assumptions of the program, the needs, definition and scope of activity.

LAY SUMMARY More than 40% of Canadian Veterans live with chronic pain. Chronic pain is often combined with mental health issues as well as the challenges of isolation and deconditioning. This study examined if there were differences in characteristics and type of care received between Veterans and civilians (people with no military service background) seeking care at a chronic pain clinic. The two groups of individuals with chronic pain were quite similar in pain outcomes, physical function, and mental health. Veterans visited chiropractors, massage therapists, physiotherapists, and psychologists more often than civilians. Although Veterans received this extra care and support, they were almost three times more likely to have thoughts of suicide. It was concluded that Veterans with chronic pain would greatly benefit in participating in an interdisciplinary pain care program tailored to Veteran-specific needs.
