OBJECTIVES: Most children and adolescents have low levels of cancer knowledge and awareness, and infrequently engage in preventive behaviors. This study examined the effects of a short classroom-based intervention for cancer prevention on knowledge, attitude toward cancer preventability, self-efficacy, and behavioral intentions of fifth-grade elementary school students.METHODS: The study was based on a pre-post-follow-up, 2-group, quasi-experimental design. Participants in the intervention group attended two 40-minute sessions on cancer prevention education and watched a music video about cancer prevention, while participants in the control group were only exposed to the music video. Self-reported knowledge, attitude toward cancer preventability, self-efficacy, and behavioral intentions were assessed 1 week pre-intervention and post-intervention, as well as 3 months post-intervention.RESULTS: The 3-month post-intervention results revealed partial effects, indicating that the education intervention improved knowledge and attitudes toward cancer preventability; however, no effects were observed on self-efficacy and behavioral intentions 3 months after the intervention.CONCLUSIONS: Long-term regular booster sessions are required to improve not only social-cognitive factors, but also behavioral intentions, which could result in behavior changes promoting cancer prevention.

Abstract Background fear of falling and reduced fall-related self-efficacy are frequent consequences of falls and associated with poorer rehabilitation outcomes. To address these psychological consequences, geriatric inpatient rehabilitation was augmented with a cognitive behavioural intervention (“Step by Step”) and evaluated in a RCT. Methods one hundred fifteen hip and pelvic fracture patients (age = 82.5 years, 70% female) admitted to geriatric inpatient rehabilitation were randomly allocated to the intervention or control group. The intervention consisted of eight additional individual sessions during inpatient rehabilitation, one home visit and four telephone calls delivered over 2 months after discharge. Both groups received geriatric inpatient rehabilitation. Primary outcomes were fall-related self-efficacy (short falls efficacy scale-international) and physical activity as measured by daily walking duration (activPAL3™ sensor) after admission to rehabilitation, before discharge and 1-month post-intervention. Results in covariance analyses, patients in the intervention group showed a significant improvement in fall-related self-efficacy (P = 0.025, d = −0.42), but no difference in total daily walking duration (P = 0.688, d = 0.07) 1-month post-intervention compared to the control condition. Further significant effects in favour of the intervention group were found in the secondary outcomes “perceived ability to manage falls” (P = 0.031, d = 0.41), “physical performance” (short physical performance battery) (P = 0.002, d = 0.58) and a lower “number of falls” (P = 0.029, d = −0.45). Conclusions the intervention improved psychological and physical performance measures but did not increase daily walking duration. For the inpatient part of the intervention further research on the required minimum intensity needed to be effective is of interest. Duration and components used to improve physical activity after discharge should be reconsidered.

AbstractObjective:The study aimed to assess the impact of a game-based nutritional intervention on food consumption, nutritional knowledge and self-efficacy in the adoption of healthy eating practices.Design:This cluster randomised controlled trial included both male and female high school students from private schools in the Federal District, Brazil. Four schools were randomly selected for each group. Investigated variables were age, sex, monthly family income, maternal education level, dietary perceptions and practices, nutritional knowledge and self-efficacy in the adoption of healthy eating practices.Setting:Intervention group participants were instructed to play Rango Cards, a digital game developed for the study, on their own, for a period of 7–17 d, while the control group was not provided with any game or material during the study.Participants:The study included 319 adolescents (mean age = 15·8 (sd 0·7) years).Results:Significant reductions were observed in the intervention group compared with the control group for the following variables: habit of eating while watching TV or studying and having meals at fast food restaurants. The intervention group showed increased knowledge of the effects of fruit and vegetable consumption as well as improved self-efficacy in the adoption of healthy eating practices such as reducing Na intake and preparing healthy meals.Conclusions:The design of Rango Cards is potentially capable of effecting positive changes. Therefore, the digital game promotes autonomy and self-care among adolescents with regard to healthy eating.

Abstract Background Evidence indicates the lower intake of fruits and vegetables than the recommended daily amount. Study aimed at determining the effects of peer education intervention on the consumption of fruits and vegetable in housewives. Methods A quasi-experimental was conducted with 130 housewives referring to health care centers in Bandar Abbas, Iran. Sixty-five subjects were recruited in each of the intervention and the control groups. Intervention group were divided into three subgroups each receiving a seven-sessions educational programs (lecturing and group discussion) through peers about the importance of benefits of fruits and vegetables consumption. Participants were followed for two months. Data were collected using a questionnaire in two stages of pre- and post-intervention. Differences in the outcome before and after the intervention were tested using T-test and paired T-test. Results The daily servings of fruits and vegetables in the intervention group increased from 1.73 to 4.20 and in the control group from 1.96 to 2.16; a statistically significant difference was also observed between the groups (P < 0.001). After the intervention benefits and self-efficacy of fruits and vegetables consumption significantly increased and perceived barriers of fruits and vegetables consumption significantly decreased in the intervention group (P < 0.001). Conclusion Peer education improves benefits and self-efficacy, reduces barriers, and increases the daily servings of fruits and vegetables in housewives.

Childhood obesity may be lessened by parent-focused interventions. A pilot parent-directed trial with 46 parents of overweight and obese elementary school students was conducted at two ethnically diverse public schools in Framingham, Massachusetts. Parents were randomly assigned to either the Materials Group, which received mailed educational materials, or the Materials plus Personal Encounters Group, which received educational materials through interactions with community health workers (CHWs). Parents completed baseline and post-intervention surveys; children’s body mass index (BMI) percentiles were measured at baseline and post-intervention. There were no differences in the reduction of children’s BMI between groups. However, the mean BMI percentile for all children dropped from 94.1 to 90.6 ( p = .005), while there was no change in BMI among a nonrandomized contemporaneous control group. Findings are limited by the lack of a true control group and small sample size. Results from this school nurse and CHW outreach program to parents are encouraging.

Anti-bullying policies and interventions are the main approach addressing bullying behaviours in Australian schools. However, the evidence supporting these approaches is inconsistent and its theoretical underpinning may be problematic. The current study examined the effects of a martial arts based psycho-social intervention on participants’ ratings of resilience and self-efficacy, delivered as a randomised controlled trial to 283 secondary school students. Results found a consistent pattern for strengths-based wellbeing outcomes. All measures relating to resilience and self-efficacy improved for the intervention group, whereas results declined for the control group. These findings suggest that a martial arts based psycho-social intervention may be an efficacious method of improving wellbeing outcomes including resilience and self-efficacy. The study proposes utilising alternatives to the anti-bullying approach and that interventions should be aimed towards helping individuals develop strengths and cope more effectively, which has specific relevance to bullying and more generalised importance to positive mental health.

This study evaluated a brief, bystander bullying intervention for elementary school students. Students in the intervention group reported an increase in knowledge and confidence to act as “defenders.” Students in the intervention group also reported an increase in self-esteem relative to the control group, although this finding was limited to sixth-grade students. The study found no group differences in sense of school belonging. This article discusses implications for school counselors.

Abstract Background Breastfeeding rates in Mexico are far from World Health Organization (WHO) recommendations with 28.8% of Exclusive Breastfeeding (EBF) under 6 months of age, according to the 2018 National Health and Nutrition Survey. Formative research has shown that culturally appropriate counseling is an effective breastfeeding intervention. The objective of the current study was to evaluate the effect of interpersonal counseling on EBF in a primary healthcare center in Tijuana, México. Methods This was a randomized controlled trial pilot with a sample of mothers with infants under 4 months of age from a primary care center. Participants were randomized into two groups: 1) Control group, received counseling on immunizations and standard infant feeding information, and 2) Intervention group, receiving breastfeeding counseling using a socio-ecological framework. Changes in breastfeeding attitudes, self-efficacy and EBF were evaluated at 2 months post-intervention. Results A total of 80 mothers completed the 2 month follow up assessment (40 in each group). The mean age at baseline was 26.4 years for mothers and 1.4 months for infants. There was a 30% increase in EBF at 2 months follow up in the intervention group and 15% decrease in the control group post-intervention. We observed a significant improvement in breastfeeding attitudes (P = 0.0001), self-efficacy (P = 0.046) and EBF (P = 0.0001) in the intervention group. Reported obstacles were discomfort of breastfeeding in public (23%), infant dissatisfaction (23%), pain (19%), insufficient milk supply (15%) and returning to work (8%). Conclusions Breastfeeding counseling based on previous formative research improved breastfeeding attitudes, self-efficacy and practices in this population. These findings suggest that the promotion of breastfeeding utilizing a socio-ecological framework may improve breastfeeding rates by addressing the needs of women within their varying sociocultural contexts. Career guidance needs new perspectives considering challenges that characterized our future, and it can not exist without solidarity, inclusion, and attention to the environmental challenges. It also should be able to positively influence stakeholders to invest in the values of the 2030 Agenda recently proposed by the United Nations and their encouragement to think about some emergencies that the new generations will have to face in the future. Based on these premises, we designed and validated a sustainable career guidance intervention for high school students. Participants (N = 75) were assigned to an experimental or a control group. All participants responded pre- and post-intervention to measure career adaptability, training, and future investment, and wishes about the feature. The students from the sustainable career intervention group increased in post-intervention scores on control, curiosity, confidence, and training and future investment. They also indicated future wishes that take into more account attention to relationships and social challenges.

Objective: Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever (DHF) is one of the most contagious diseases and is a major public health problem in Indonesia. Incidence Rate of DHF in Palangka Raya city fot three years continues to increase  become 62,7% and case fatality rate 1,23% in 2016, this is because of community participation as Juru Pemantau Jentik–Pemberantasan Sarang Nyamuk (Jumantik-PSN) has not been implementes optimally. One of the strategic steps in optimizing the community participation in the control of DHF is empowerment of students with Booklet to improve the behavior of Jumantik-PSN school children. This study aim to determine the effectiveness of the use of booklets in increasing the knowledge, attitude, behavior of jumantik-PSN in school children and the presence of larvae in SDN 1 and 2 Panarung Palangka Raya City. Method: This research uses two group pre-posttest design experimental design. The sample was 60 students of fifth grade elementary school, each of 30 experimental and control groups, the instrument used by the questionnaire, the checklist, the booklet. Result: There were differences score of knowledge and attitude between control group and intervention group (P = 0,002 and P = 0,031), mann whitney test analysis there were difference of behavior score (p = 0,014) and chi square test showed different proportion of larva between the intervention group and the control group (P = 0.004). Discussion: Sismantik is the empowerment of elementary school students. Counseling with booklets significantly helped to increase the knowledge, attitude and behavior of Jumantik-PSN of school children. Conclusion:  Booklet can be one of education media alternative to convey information relating Jumantik-PSN school children so that can help improve knowledge, attitude, behavior and decrease the existence of larva.

The quality of adolescent breakfast is very influential on daily nutritional needs. Fast food is a favorite food for teenagers but the nutritional content is lacking. Love to eat - ready-to-eat food makes the practice of cooking decline. The purpose of this study was to improve cooking skills and self-efficacy in preparing breakfast for junior high school students in Kendari City. This study is a quasi-experimental design. The subjects in this study were 26 students of SMPN 10 Kendari, namely the intervention group who were given cooking training and nutrition education with the lecture method and 26 students of SMPN 5 Kendari were the control group who were given nutrition education through leaflets. Data were analyzed using paired t-test and independent sample t-test. The results showed that there were differences in cooking skills and self-efficacy in preparing breakfast (p<0.05) in the intervention group (p<0.05). In addition, there were also differences in self-efficacy in preparing breakfast between the intervention group and the control group (p<0.05). It was concluded that there was a positive effect of cooking training on increasing self-efficacy and cooking skills for preparing breakfast. For the school, it is better to hold extracurricular cooking activities to train students' skills in meeting daily nutritional intake.
