Two new species of Macrostomum (Platyhelminthes: Macrostomorpha), M. shiyanensis n. sp. and M. lankouensis n. sp. are described from Shiyan Reservoir and Lankou Town. Morphological characteristics of the penis stylets and sperm, as well as the phylogenetic analysis using concatenated sequences of 18S and 28S rDNA genes support the establishment of these two new species and indicate that they are closely related to M. sinensis and M. heyuanensis described from different regions of Guangdong province. Finally, the progress of molecular phylogenetics of Macrostomum worldwide is also discussed.

Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV), a leading cause of piglet diarrhea outbreaks, poses a significant danger to the swine industry. The aim of this study was to investigate the epidemic characteristics of PEDV that was circulating in Guangdong province, one of China’s major pig producing provinces. Clinical samples were collected from eight pig farms in Guangdong province between 2018 and 2019 and tested for the major porcine enteric pathogens, including PEDV, transmissible gastroenteritis virus (TGEV), Swine enteric coronavirus (SeCoV), Swine acute diarrhea syndrome coronavirus (SADS-CoV), porcine deltacoronavirus (PDCoV), and porcine rotavirus (RV). As a result, only PEDV and RV were detected at a rate of 47.0% (16/34) and 18.6% (8/34), respectively. Coinfectoin with PEDV and RV occurred at a rate of PEDV 12.5% (2/16). Subsequently, the full-length S gene sequences of 13 PEDV strains were obtained, and phylogenetic analysis suggested the presence of GII-c group PEDV strains in this region (non-S-INDEL). Two novel common amino acid insertions (55T/IG56 and 551L) and one novel glycosylation site (1199G+) were detected when the CV777 and ZJ08 vaccine strains were compared. Furthermore, intragroup recombination events in the S gene regions 51–548 and 2478–4208 were observed in the PEDV strains studied. In summary, the observations provide current information on the incidence of viral agents causing swine diarrhea in southern China and detailed the genetic characteristics and evolutionary history of the dominant PEDV field strains. Our findings will aid in the development of an updated vaccine for the prevention and control of PEDV variant strains.

Two new species of Lactarius from Dinghu Mountain, Guangdong Province in southern China were described based on both morphological characters and phylogenetic analysis of internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequences. Lactarius verrucosporus sp. nov. is characterized by reddish brown pileus with white and decurved margin, pale cream lamellae, globose to subglobose basidiospores with isolated warts, thin pileipellis composed of globose subterminal cells and inflated terminal elements. Lactarius nigricans sp. nov. is recognized by greyish brown pileus, beige lamellae, amyloid basidiospores with high ridges, subcylindrical to subfusiform caulocystidia, thick pileipellis with long terminal cells. Both molecular and morphological analysis consistently confirm that L. verrucosporus and L. nigricans belong to Lactarius subgenera Russularia and Plinthogalus, respectively, and both species are distinct from all described species of these two subgenera. The morphological differences of these two novel species with their closely related taxa are discussed.

In the present study, we provide supplementary data for Myxidium cf. rhodei Léger, 1905 based on morphological, histological and molecular characterization. M. cf. rhodei was observed in the kidneys of 918 out of 942 (97%) roach Rutilus rutilus (Linnaeus, 1758). Myxospores of M. cf. rhodei were fusiform with pointed ends, measuring 12.7 ± 0.1 SD (11.8-13.4) µm in length and 4.6 ± 0.1 (3.8-5.4) µm in width. Two similar pear-shaped polar capsules were positioned at either ends of the longitudinal axis of the myxospore: each of these capsules measured 4.0 ± 0.1 (3.1-4.7) µm in length and 2.8 ± 0.1 (2.0-4.0) µm in width. Polar filaments were coiled into 4 to 5 turns. Approximately 18-20 longitudinal straight ridges were observed on the myxospore surface. The suture line was straight and distinctive, running near the middle of the valves. Histologically, the plasmodia of the present species were found in the Bowman’s capsules, and rarely in the interstitium of the host. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that M. cf. rhodei was sister to M. anatidum in the Myxidium clade including most Myxidium species from freshwater hosts.

A novel Borrelia species, Candidatus Borrelia javanense, was found in ectoparasite ticks, Amblyomma javanense, from Manis javanica pangolins seized in anti-smuggling operations in southern China. Overall, 12 tick samples in 227 (overall prevalence 5.3%) were positive for Candidatus B. javanense, 9 (5.1%) in 176 males, and 3 (5.9%) in 51 females. The phylogenetic analysis, based on the 16S rRNA gene and the flagellin gene sequences of the Borrelia sp., exhibited strong evidence that Candidatus B. javanense did not belong to the Lyme disease Borrelia group and the relapsing fever Borrelia group but another lineage of Borrelia. The discovery of the novel Borrelia species suggests that A. javanense may be the transmit vector, and the M. javanica pangolins should be considered a possible origin reservoir in the natural circulation of these new pathogens. To our knowledge, this is the first identification of a novel Borrelia species agent in A. javanense from pangolins. Whether the novel agent is pathogenic to humans is unknown and needs further research.
