Impact of chipping residues and its leachate on the initiation and growth of aspen root suckers

Field chipping operations often disperse chipping residues of bark and branches in layers or piles in cut-overs. We tested the effects of these residues on the root sucker regeneration of aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.), using root systems established in large pots. After decapitation of the stems, the root systems were covered with a 4 cm thick layer of chipping residues. Other root systems were treated with an extract of the water-soluble compounds leached from a similar amount of residues while others were left untreated as controls; all three treatments were left to sucker for 7 wk. There were no differences in the number of root suckers that were initiated on the aspen root system among the three treatments. There were, however, significantly lower numbers of suckers that emerged through the chipping residue and their emergence was delayed relative to the other treatments. The delay in emergence and the reduction in sucker numbers were likely a result of the residues acting as a physical barrier. After 7 wk, concentrations of water-soluble phenolic compounds, sugars, and carbon from the chipping residues were elevated in the soil; however, they appeared to be below a level that affects sucker emergence and development. In this work, the effect of pre-fermentative skin maceration (PFSM) on the chemical composition of the macromolecular fraction, polysaccharides and proteins, phenolic compounds, chromatic characteristics, and protein stability of Albariño monovarietal white wines was studied. PFSM increased the extraction of phenolic compounds and polysaccharides and reduced the extraction of pathogenesis-related proteins (PRPs). PFSM wine showed significantly higher protein instability. Sodium and calcium bentonites were used for protein stabilisation of wines obtained with PFSM (+PFSM) and without PFSM (−PFSM), and their efficiencies compared to fungal chitosan (FCH) and k-carrageenan. k-Carrageenan reduced the content of PRPs and the protein instability in both wines, and it was more efficient than sodium and calcium bentonites. FCH was unable to heat stabilise both wines, and PRPs levels remained unaltered. On the other hand, FCH decreased the levels of wine polysaccharides by 60%. Sodium and calcium bentonite also decreased the levels of wine polysaccharides although to a lower extent (16% to 59%). k-Carrageenan did not affect the wine polysaccharide levels. Overall, k-carrageenan is suitable for white wine protein stabilisation, having a more desirable impact on the wine macromolecular fraction than the other fining agents, reducing the levels of the wine PRPs without impacting polysaccharide composition.

Specialty malts are commonly used in brewing to provide flavor, aroma, and color to wort and beer. The use of specialty malts contributes to the variety of beer products; therefore, it is important to understand their effect on the characteristics of wort and beer. This study investigates the impact of various specialty malts on wort and beer properties. A control beer was prepared with 100% base malt, and four beer treatments were prepared with the addition of kilned, roasted, and caramel specialty malts. For each treatment, 20% of the base malt was substituted with the various specialty malts when preparing the wort. The fermentable sugars and free amino nitrogen (FAN) content for each wort were analyzed. Alcohol by volume (ABV), international bitterness units (IBU), diacetyl, and polyphenol content of each prepared beers were subsequently analyzed. Results showed that wort prepared with the addition of roasted and caramel malts contained a lower concentration of fermentable sugars and FAN than wort prepared with the base and kilned malts. Beers prepared with the addition of roasted and caramel malts exhibited the lowest levels of ABV, as well as the lowest levels of diacetyl. These beers also exhibited higher levels of total phenolic compounds compared to the other beer samples. No change was observed in IBU levels as a result of brewing with the different specialty malts. This study illustrates how the use of specialty malts impacts wort and beer properties, providing useful information to aid in the production of quality beer products.

In early May, 1-m sections of trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) roots in a forest cutblock were carefully exposed and examined for damage. Undamaged roots were subjected to one of three wounding treatments (scrape, sever, or uninjured control) and were then reburied to either the full normal organic layer depth or to one third of the normal depth. Following one growing season, the roots were reexposed and assessed for aspen sucker numbers and growth rates. Results indicate that injured roots produced suckers nearly twice as often as uninjured roots. Further, injured roots produced more suckers per root, and these suckers were taller and had greater leaf area. Roots buried under shallow organic layers also generated more suckers, regardless of injury type. The side of injury (distal or proximal) did not affect any of the measured variables. The present study suggests that moderate wounding of aspen roots increases initial sucker numbers and growth rates.Key words: trembling aspen, root sucker, root injury, regeneration.

There are many problems involving cases of destruction of buildings and other structures. The columns can deteriorate for several reasons such as the evolution and changing habits of the loads. The experimental phase of this work was based on a test involving nine reinforced concrete columns under combined bending and axial compression, at an initial eccentricity of 60 mm. Two columns were used as reference, one having the original dimensions of the column and the other, monolithic, had been cast along the thickness of the strengthened piece. The remaining columns received a 35 mm thick layer of self-compacting concrete on their compressed face. For the preparation of the interface between the two materials, this surface was scarified and furrowed and connectors were inserted onto the columns' shear reinforcement in various positions and amounts.As connectors, 5 mm diameter steel bars were used (the same as for stirrups), bent in the shape of a "C" with 25 mm coatings. >As a conclusion, not only the quantity, but mainly, the location of the connectors used in the link between substrate and reinforcement is crucial to increase strength and to change failure mode.

The increased rate of sugarcane harvest without previous burn has provided a very favorable environment to the froghopper Mahanarva fimbriolata (Stal, 1854), with high moisture and low temperature variation. Few works have studied the response of sugarcane to this pest, so little is known about resistant cultivars. Plant phenolics are widely studied compounds because of their known antiherbivore effect. This research aims to determine if the attack of M. fimbriolata nymphs stimulates the accumulation of total phenolics in sugarcane. The experiment was carried out in greenhouse and arranged in completely randomized design, in a 3 X 2 X 4 factorial with three replications. Second instar nymphs of M. fimbriolata were infested at the following rates: control, 2-4 and 4-8 nymphs per pot (first-second infestations, respectively). Pots were covered with nylon net and monitored daily to isolate the effect of leaf sucking adults. Leaf and root samples were collected and kept frozen in liquid nitrogen until analyses. Infested plants showed higher levels of phenolics in both root and leaf tissues. In roots, the cultivar SP80-1816 accumulated more phenolic compounds in response to the infestation of M. fimbriolata. On the other hand, higher levels were found in leaves and roots of control plants of SP86-42, which might be an indication of a non-preference mechanism. The increase of total phenolics in sugarcane infested with root-sucking froghopper nymphs does not seem to be useful to detect the resistance to this pest.

AbstractEucalyptus species have found their place in traditional medicine and pharmacological research and they have also been shown to possess a large number of phenolic compounds and antioxidants. The present study sought to implement conventional extraction to yield maximal total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), proanthocyanidins, antioxidants, and saponins from E. robusta using different solvents. The most suitable extraction solvent was further employed for extracting phytochemicals from E. saligna, E. microcorys, and E. globulus to select the Eucalyptus species with the greatest bioactive compound content. The results emphasised the efficiency of water in extracting TPC ((150.60 ± 2.47) mg of gallic acid equivalents per g), TFC ((38.83 ± 0.23) mg of rutin equivalents per g), proanthocyanidins ((5.14 ± 0.77) mg of catechin equivalents per g), and antioxidants ABTS ((525.67 ± 1.99) mg of trolox equivalents (TE) per g), DPPH ((378.61 ± 4.72) mg of TE per g); CUPRAC ((607.43 ± 6.69) mg of TE per g) from E. robusta. Moreover, the aqueous extract of E. robusta had the highest TPC, TFC and antioxidant values among the other Eucalyptus species tested. These findings highlighted the efficiency of conventional extraction in extracting natural bioactive compounds from Eucalyptus species for pharmaceutical and nutraceutical applications.

The olive variety 'Istrska belica' is well known for its numerous positive properties, such as resistance to low temperature and high oil content. The aim was to determine the variations in the levels of phenolic compounds and sensory properties during storage of 'Istrska belica' virgin olive oil. The profile of the phenolic compounds and sensory properties of 'Istrska belica' olive oil were further compared with those for other varieties, including 'Leccino' and 'Maurino'. The content of phenolic compounds of the olive oils decreased after 1 year and 2 years of storage. After 2 years of storage, the levels of oleuropein and the ligstroside derivates significantly decreased, while the end-stage compounds tyrosol and hydroxytyrosol increased. These data show that after 1 year of storage, the 'Istrska belica' olive oil preserves similar intensities for bitterness and pungency, and similar oleuropein and ligstroside derivates levels. In contrast to the other oils analysed, the intensities of bitterness and pungency of 'Istrska belica' olive oil decreased greatly only after 2 years of storage. Moreover, the phenolic compounds content, and oleuropein and ligstroside derivates levels, and the intensities of bitterness and pungency were the highest in fresh 'Istrska belica' olive oil, compared to the other olive oils analysed. Overall, 'Istrska belica' olive oil has important advantages over olive oil from other varieties that are grown in the Istria region.

Artocarpus plant  dadah  Miq.  is one of the species of Artocarpus of the Moraceae family that belongs to a rare plant in nature. This plant is known as the main source of phenolic derivative compound that is flavone compound  in  or  tri-oxygenated and terisoprenilasi in C-3 position ,  and also known as the main source of phenolic compound derived flavonoids, aryl-benzofuran, stilbenoid and xanthane flavonoida, which have biological activity as promoters antitumor, antibacterial, antifungal, antiimflamatori, antikanker and others. This study aimed to isolate and identify the phenolic compounds contained in plant  A .  dadah obtained from the village of Purwoasri, North Metro District, Metro City, Lampung Province. Research stages include collection and sample preparation and extraction, isolation, and purification of compounds using KCV method, flash chromatography  , KKG, and TLC, while the identification of compounds is performed using ultraviolet-visible (UV-VIS) and infrared (IR) spectroscopy. In the present study, three compounds were isolated, one of which was estimated to be flavonoid compounds based on UV-VIS and IR spectra data which also had high activity against murine leukemia P-388 cells with IC 50  3.1 μg / mL. Based on the IR spectral data for the other two compounds there is a -OH uptake in the region of 3200-3500 cm -1, C = C aromatic uptake in the area of 1600-1400 cm -1 , so it is estimated that both compounds are phenolic group compounds.Tumbuhan Artocarpus dadah Miq.merupakan salah satu spesies Artocarpus dari famili Moraceae yang termasuk tumbuhan langka di alam. Tumbuhan ini dikenal sebagai sumber utama senyawa turunan fenolik yaitu senyawa flavon di atau tri-oksigenasi dan terisoprenilasi pada posisi C-3, dan juga dikenal sebagai sumber utama senyawa fenolik turunan flavonoid, aril-benzofuran, stilbenoid dan santon turunan flavonoida, yang memiliki aktivitas biologi sebagai promotor antitumor, antibakteri, antifungal, antiimflamatori, antikanker dan lain-lain.Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengisolasi dan mengidentifikasi senyawa fenolik yang terkandung dalam tumbuhan A. dadah yang diperoleh dari desa Purwoasri, Kecamatan Metro Utara, Kota Metro, Provinsi Lampung.Tahapan penelitian yang dilakukan meliputi pengumpulan dan persiapan sampel kemudian ekstraksi, isolasi, dan pemurnian senyawa menggunakan metode KCV, kromatografi flash, KKG, dan KLT, sedangkan identifikasi senyawa dilakukan menggunakan spektroskopi ultraungu-tampak (UV-VIS) dan inframerah (IR). Pada penelitian ini telah berhasil diisolasi tiga senyawa, yang salah satunya diperkirakan senyawa flavonoid berdasarkan data spektrum UV-VIS dan IR yang juga memiliki aktivitas tinggi terhadap sel murine leukemia P-388 dengan IC50 3,1 μg/mL. Berdasarkan data spektrum IR untuk dua senyawa yang lain terdapat serapan –OH pada daerah 3200-3500 cm-1, serapan C=C aromatik di daerah 1600-1400 cm-1, sehingga diperkirakan kedua senyawa tersebut merupakan senyawa golongan fenolik.

The medicinal plants (Artemisia herba-alba) were subjected to mineral analysis, total protein and the phenolic contents. Couple plants were collected from AL-Gabal AL-Akhder region in Northeast of Libya (Coastal and Desert) Artemisia herba-alba 1 Artemisia herba-alba 2 respectively during November (2018).  Results showed that mineral content found to vary significantly. Appreciable amounts of calcium Ca was recorded 84.930 ppm in Artemisia herba-alba 1 while 30 ppm in Artemisia herba-alba 2, potassium (K) was 43.3 and 27.6 ppm in Artemisia herba-alba 1 and Artemisia herba-alba 2 respectively. Meanwhile, Fe was recorded as 0.39, 0.52 ppm in Artemisia herba-alba1 and 2. Level of total protein was 9.95 and 7.79 (mg/g) in Artemisia herba-alba 1 and Artemisia herba-alba 2 respectively. Present study found that the phenolic compounds were determined in both plants with high levels. The available data indicate the two plants were found to contain Alkaloids, essential oils, flavonoids, glycosides, phenolic compounds, sterols/triterpenes, and tannins. However, sterols/ triterpenes and coumarins were found in herba-alba 1  significantly, while Alkaloids, flavonoids, and Saponins found highest in herba-alba 2 compared to herba-alba 1 on the other side the quantity of essential oils was higher in the herba-alba 2.

The results of studies of the biochemical composition and antioxidant properties of nuts sold in the consumer market of St. Petersburg were presented in the work. The objects of research were kernels of nuts: sweet almonds, hazelnuts, cashews, walnuts. Total Soxhlet lipids, fatty acid composition, vitamin E, fractional composition of tocopherols and phytosterols, total phenolic compounds and flavonoids, antioxidant activity by FRAP with ferric chloride, o-phenanthroline and Triton X 100 were determined in nuts. Nuts varied in lipid content (42.6–65.4%) with a predominance of unsaturated fatty acids from 80.4 to 92.4 relative%. Oleic acid prevailed in the fatty acids of almonds, hazelnuts and cashews, while linoleic acid prevailed in walnuts. Walnuts contained the highest amount of polyunsaturated fatty acids. The antioxidant properties of nuts were formed by a complex of water and fat-soluble antioxidants. Fat-soluble antioxidants included vitamin E with a predominance of ?-tocopherol in the kernels of sweet almonds and hazelnuts, ?-tocopherol - in walnuts and cashews. Only sweet almond kernels contained all the tocopherol fractions. ?- and ?-tocopherols were absent in hazelnut lipids, while ?-tocopherols were absent in cashews and walnuts. ?-sitosterol, campesterol and stigmasterol with a predominance of ?-sitosterol were identified in the composition of phytosterols in all nut kernels. Water-soluble antioxidants are mainly represented by phenolic compounds, the amount of which varies widely depending on the type of nuts: cashews
