Detection of yield-independent forage quality differences among timothy genotypes

The trade-off between forage yield and quality would be minimized by selecting a genotype that produces high-quality forage regardless of yield. This paper attempts to detect forage quality differences among timothy (Phleum pratense L.) genotypes that are independent of yield. Two separate field experiments were conducted from 1993 to 1995 on an Ando loamy sand in Hokkaido, Japan. For exp. 1, timothy plants (cv. Nosap) were harvested at various maturity stages for the first, second, and third cuts in 1994 and 1995 to evaluate the relationships of crude protein (CP) and neutral detergent fibre (NDF) yields with dry matter (DM) yield. The relationship between NDF and DM yields was positive and linear across different cuts (r2 =  0.98–0.99), and was slightly affected by year. In contrast, the relationship between CP and DM yields depended on the cuts (r2 = 0.01–0.98). In exp. 2, four genotypes were evaluated in 1994 to compare the coefficients of the NDF vs. DM yield regressions using ANCOVA. The comparison showed that the NDF yields of Kitami 20, Kitami 21, and Hokuo were less than that of Nosap (P < 0.01) for a wide range of DM yields (150–700 g m-2). Thus, NDF concentrations were lower in the former genotypes across varying forage yields. Using the regression lines as indices could facilitate selection of timothy genotypes that reduce the trade-off between yield and quality, although further experiments are needed to confirm the usefulness of this method. Sudan grass and pearl millet are major warm season dryland crops, primarily grown for grain production and used as a major source of dietary energy. Both crops are highly water use efficient and belong to the C 4 group of species with high photosynthetic efficiency and dry matter accumulation rates. Both sudan grass and pearl millet have good forage quality, with an adequate crude protein content; that of pearl millet (8.7%) is higher than that of sorghum (6.0%). Therefore, the present investigation was conducted in the Western Delta Region at El-Naubaria, 40 km south of Alexandria, over two successive seasons to evaluate the forage yield and quality of sudan grass and pearl millet. Field experiments were established on calcareous soils, with five fertilization treatments. The results indicate that pearl millet surpassed sudan grass in fresh (6.56 t/ha) and dry yield (2.91 t/ha), which was 8.89% and 5.26% more, respectively, than for sudan grass. As regards the forage quality, pearl millet had good digestibility and was lower in fibre than sudan grass.

Maize is the very important silage source in the world. Timely harvesting ensure high maize forage yield and quality. Therefore, the study focused on the effects of four harvesting times (starting at the 12 August every 7 days) on yield and qualitative parameters of forage green mass of maize hybrid ZP 677. The experiment was set in Vojvodina Province, Serbia, during the 2013 and 2014 growing seasons. Plant height, stem diameter, number of leaves per plant, ear percentage, forage yield, dry matter content and crude protein content were higher, while stem percentage was lower in 2014 with favorable climatic condition. Forage yield, crude protein content, ADF and NDF decreased, while dry matter content significantly increased with delay in harvesting. The maize hybrid should be harvested when the milk line is three-quarter of the way down the grain that is in the third decade of August.

Headline fungicide was recently registered for management of foliar diseases on alfalfa. The effect of disease control on yield, forage quality, and potential return on investment for fungicide application was determined for field experiments conducted at five locations in 2012, three in Wisconsin and two in Minnesota. Headline reduced defoliation in 12 out of 14 harvests and increased forage yield and return on investment in 5 out 12 harvests compared to the untreated control. Headline plus the insecticide Warrior II reduced defoliation in 10 out of 14 harvests and increased yield and return on investment in four harvests compared to Warrior II alone. Two common foliar pathogens were highly sensitive to pyraclostrobin, the active ingredient in Headline. For Phoma medicaginis, the in vitro EC50 was 2.3 ng pyraclostrobin/ml and for Stemphylium globuliferum the EC50 was 52 ng pyraclostrobin/ml. The results indicate that fungicide application can increase yields under higher disease pressure and increase crude protein when the crop is harvested at later developmental stages. At Shika in a subhumid environment of Nigeria, a 3-year study was carried out to select newly developed groundnut varieties for use in crop–livestock production systems. The study examined 11 groundnut varieties. Emergence time, plant stands at full emergence, forage and seed yields and yield components were examined. Whole plant samples were analysed for crude protein (CP) content. Varieties ICGV 87123 gave the lowest forage yield and cultivar M517-80I, the highest, with seven varieties recording forage yields above 5 t/ha. The CP content of forage was lowest (14·8%) for variety M576-80I and highest (21·6%) for variety M554-76. Mean seed yield (over 3 years) varied significantly from 0·73 to 1·68 t/ha. Only two varieties had mean seed yield >1 t/ha. The relationship between seed and forage yields was positive and significant (r = 0·529, P < 0·006). Varieties RMP 12, 88-80I and M517–80 were most promising for both forage and seed production.

A field experiment was conducted in the Department of Agricultural Botany, Janta Mahavidiyalaya Ajeetmal, Auraiya (C. S. J. M. University, Kanpur) during 2014, to evaluate the effect of various levels of nitrogen on growth, yield and quality of fodder maize. 3 treatments were taken up (viz.,T1 75, T2 100 and T3 125 kg nitrogen ha-1 along with control (T0).Plant height, dry matter accumulations (t ha-1), forage yield (t ha-1) increased with increasing levels of nitrogen, while stem diameters (cm), leaf area (cm2), fresh weight (g), crude protein percent decreased with increasing levels of nitrogen.

To evaluate the forage yield and quality of seven perennial native species in monoculture and binary mixtures under a range of climate conditions, a 6-yr field experiment was conducted at the Swift Current Research and Development Centre (SCRDC), Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC), in Swift Current, SK. Seven native perennial forage species from three functional groups (C3, C4grasses, and legumes) were seeded in 2010 in monocultures and binary mixtures. Forage yield and quality [crude protein, acid detergent fiber (ADF), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), phosphorus (P), calcium (Ca), and copper (Cu)] were measured during the first week of July and last week of August in 2011–2016. Mixtures that included western wheatgrass [Pascopyrum smithii (Rydb.) Löve] (WWG) tended to produce a greater yield when 90% of the composition within these mixtures was WWG. Adding bluebunch wheatgrass [Pseudoroegneria spicata (Pursh) Löve] (BBW), little blue stem [Schizachyrium scoparium (Michx.) Nash] (LBS), and prairie clovers (Dalea spp.) to the binary mixtures can increase the positive aspects of species diversity on stability and productivity in seeded pastures. Among the grasses, WWG contained higher crude protein and lower ADF and NDF concentration. Mixtures of forage species produced higher forage yield compared with monocultures. Native forage species can produce stable forage yield across very different climate situations. In mixtures, WWG showed promising results in forage productivity and quality and can be a suitable option for seeded pastures.

The production of lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) types other than crisphead (i.e., leaf, boston, bibb, and romaine) has recently increased due to expanding consumer demand. Fertilizer P recommendations for these lettuce types are largely based on soil-test calibrations for the crisphead type only. However, biomass production and morphological traits of the different lettuce types vary. Four field experiments were conducted to compare the relative efficiencies of these lettuce types to P fertilization. All lettuce types showed large yield and quality responses to P. Because environmental conditions affected yield potential, P rates required for optimal yield varied by lettuce type within experiments. However, the P rates required for optimal yield were similar over all experiments. Furthermore, the relationship between relative yield and soil-test P across all seasons showed a similar soil-test P level was required for maximum yield of all lettuce types. The results of this study show that soil-test-based fertilizer recommendations for crisphead lettuce may be adequate for all lettuce types

Field pea (Pisum sativum), canola (Brassica napus), turnips (Brassica rapa) and Berseem clover (Trifolium alexandrinum) were grown in north central Alberta to assess their potential yield and quality and to evaluate their utilization and preference by white-tailed deer. Herbage DM yield, crude protein (CP), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), absolute and relative herbage utilization, and dietary preference were the criteria used. The four annual forages produced over 3, 000 to 11, 000 kg ha-1 DM with canola and turnips producing higher DM yields than field pea and berseem clover. Forage CP for the four seeded forages ranged from 140 to 305 g kg-1 DM with canola and turnips having higher CP concentrations than field pea and berseem clover. NDF concentrations ranged from 246 to 480 g kg-1 DM and were lowest in turnips, intermediate in field pea, and highest in canola and berseem clover. Absolute herbage utilization remained similar (P>0.05) among the four forage species. In contrast, relative herbage utilization was greater from berseem clover (66% DM) than field pea (42% DM) or canola (22% DM) or turnips (20% DM). Differences in dietary preference occurred among the four forages (berseem clover ≥ field pea ≥ turnips ≥ canola). These results suggest that annual forages, especially berseem clover and field pea, show promise for increasing forage yield and quality and suitability for late season grazing.

This work is aimed at prediction and quantification of goat milk yield (MY, kg) losses by the somatic cell count (SCC, 103.ml−1) in milk recording. The goal is to support the prevention of milk secretion disorders, milk yield and quality. During two years there were evaluated composition and properties of individual milk samples (n = 1 173). There were included animals of brown short‑haired (BSH) breed and BSH × white short‑haired in one flock. The linear and nonlinear regression, interpolation, extrapolation, approximation and qualified estimation were used for milk losses prediction along the SCC. The relevant values of the SCC arithmetic and geometric mean and median and MY arithmetic mean were: 1,400 103.ml−1 (with high variability of 128 %), 745 and 747 103.ml−1; 2.94 kg/ day. The relationship between fat and crude protein had a correlation coefficient of 0.395, P < 0.001. There were stated the correlations between SCC and: lactose −0.416, P < 0.001; solids non fat −0.25, P < 0.001; MY −0.135, P < 0.01. The relationship between SCC and MY was negative along months, 6 cases out of 7 and significant in March and May (P < 0.05 and P < 0.01). For instance predicted MY for SCC intervals 1–1.999, 2–2.999, 3–3.999, 4–4.999, 5–5.999, 6–6.999 and ≥ 7 thousands 103.ml−1 may be 3.99, 3.77, 3.6 , 3.46, 3.33, 3.23 and 3.13 kg in 3rd month etc. The corresponding MY losses by SCC are evident from this trend. The result use is focused on the original dairy goat farm and use elsewhere is possible in farms with similar SCC, goat milk yield and rearing system.

Objectives of the present study are to determine the variations in forage yield and quality of soybean cultivars. Experiments were conducted in randomized complete blocks design with 3 replications during the growing season of 2016. A total of 10 cultivars were used as the plant material of the experiments (Bravo, A3127, Traksoy, İlksoy, Mersoy, Nova, SA-88, Arısoy, Safir, Atakişi). Cultivars had a significant effect on yield and chemical composition. Results revealed that green herbage yields varied between 826.39 - 1199.17 kg/da, dry hay yields between 247.71 - 357.90 kg/da, crude protein yields between 16.91 - 39.86 kg/da, acid detergent fiber (ADF) ratios between 26.56 - 34.61%, neutral detergent fiber (NDF) ratios between 38.43 - 44.85%, crude ash contents between 7.20 - 11.22%, crude protein contents between 6.66 - 13.53%, dry matter digestibility (DDM) values between 61.94 - 68.21%, dry matter intake (DMI) values between 2.68 - 3.12% and relative feed values (RFV) between 2.68 - 3.12. The results of the study showed that A3127 cultivar was found to be prominent with green herbage yield (1199.17 kg/da) and dry hay yield (357.90 kg/da) and Safir cultivar was found to be prominent with crude protein yield (39.86 kg/da). It was concluded that the soybean cultivars A3127 and Safir could be recommended for hay production.
