MICRONUTRIENT STATUS OF SELECTED CACAO-GROWING SOILS IN SOUTHWESTERN NIGERIA: PROFILE DISTRIBUTION OF TOTAL AND AVAILABLE ZINC

A study was conducted to determine the content and distribution of total 1.0 M NH4OAc-, 0.1 M HCl-, 1 M MgCl2-, and 0.005 M DTPA-extractable Zn in the genetic horizons of 16 soil profiles from major cacao-growing areas in Southwestern Nigeria. The content of total Zn for all the soils varied from 12 to 92 μg/g with soils derived from igneous and metamorphic rocks containing more than those of sedimentary origin. Most of the soils had the highest concentration of total Zn in the surface horizons. There was a strong association between total Zn and organic matter, total Zn and silt/clay content. The 1 M NH4OAc-, 0.1 M NCl-, 1 M MgCl2- and 0.005 M DTPA-extractable Zn in all the soils and horizons varied from 0.17 to 5.6, from 0.06 to 2.37, from 0.20 to 1.20 and from 0.022 to 1.14 μg Zn/g, respectively. The NH4OAc generally removed more Zn than the other three extractants. The amount of Zn extracted showed a general decrease with depth. A significant amount of MgCl2-extractable Zn appeared to be associated with silt content while soil pH influenced the quantity of Zn extracted by the NH4OAc method. Total Zn and seven measures of extractable Zn in horizons of seven soil profiles declined with increasing depth of sampling within the profile. Although not invariabily found, some extractants removed more Zn from the deepest horizons of some profiles than from the horizon sampled immediately above. This distribution pattern was more pronounced for extractable than total Zn. From 27 horizon samples containing an average of 108 ppm total Zn, 2 N MgCl2, DTPA, North Carolina, Morgan, N KCl, acidic NH4Ac, and 0.01 M CaCl2 extractants solubilized an average of 4.14, 3.77, 3.37, 1.99, 1.82, 1.64, and 0.69 ppm Zn, respectively. Extractable Zn values were positively correlated with total Zn, organic matter, percentage clay, and cation-exchange capacity, but inversely related to soil pH, base saturation, and percentage sand. Zinc concentrations in corn and in oats grown on the horizon samples were best correlated with amounts extracted by 2 N MgCl2, acidic NH4Ac, and N KCl. Regressions on extractable Zn and soil pH accounted for as much as 74 and 55% of variations in Zn content of corn and oats, respectively.

Abstract Conjoint analysis has become popular among social scientists for measuring multidimensional preferences. When analyzing such experiments, researchers often focus on the average marginal component effect (AMCE), which represents the causal effect of a single profile attribute while averaging over the remaining attributes. What has been overlooked, however, is the fact that the AMCE critically relies upon the distribution of the other attributes used for the averaging. Although most experiments employ the uniform distribution, which equally weights each profile, both the actual distribution of profiles in the real world and the distribution of theoretical interest are often far from uniform. This mismatch can severely compromise the external validity of conjoint analysis. We empirically demonstrate that estimates of the AMCE can be substantially different when averaging over the target profile distribution instead of uniform. We propose new experimental designs and estimation methods that incorporate substantive knowledge about the profile distribution. We illustrate our methodology through two empirical applications, one using a real-world distribution and the other based on a counterfactual distribution motivated by a theoretical consideration. The proposed methodology is implemented through an open-source software package.

Introduction: The school bullying is characterized by repetitiveness of aggression and the intentionality to injure or cause suffering to others. The bystanders to this phenomenon tend to be mainly responsible for the course that bullying will take and its results. Objective: To analyse the association between the role of bystander with the other possible roles played in bullying. Method: A total of 409 children from the third to seventh grade participated in this study, with an average age of 11 years (SD = 1.61), enrolled in two municipal public schools in Florianópolis, Santa Catarina, Brazil. The instruments used were: one of the scales of the Questionnaire for the Study of Violence Among Peers, to identify bystanders, and the Olweus Questionnaire, to describe the possible roles played in school bullying. Results: It was found that most of the participants assumed the role of bystander in school bullying. However, an association was found with regard to gender and being a bystander. Also, strong association was found between being a bystander and the other roles played in bullying, primarily in relation to the bullies. Conclusion: These results reinforce the importance of bystanders in these aggressions, not only because they represent most of the participants, but mainly because of the positive or negative reinforcement they can offer in these aggressive behaviours. Therefore, the incentive and the encouragement of these students to denounce the aggressors, as well as defending the victims is essential to reduce school bullying.

Abstract Aesthetics was never a subject or a separate philosophy in the traditional philosophies of black Africa. This is however not a justification to conclude that it is nonexistent. Indeed, aesthetics is a day to day affair among Africans. There are criteria for aesthetic judgment among African societies which vary from one society to the other. The Yorùbá of Southwestern Nigeria are not different. This study sets out to examine how the Yorùbá make their aesthetic judgments and demonstrate their aesthetic philosophy in decorating their orí, which means head among the Yorùbá. The head receives special aesthetic attention because of its spiritual and biological importance. It is an expression of the practicalities of Yorùbá aesthetic values. Literature and field work has been of paramount aid to this study. The study uses photographs, works of art and visual illustrations to show the various ways the head is adorned and cared for among the Yoruba. It relied on Yoruba art and language as a tool of investigating the concept of ori and aesthetics. Yorùbá aesthetic values are practically demonstrable and deeply located in the Yorùbá societal, moral and ethical idealisms. It concludes that the spiritual importance of orí or its aesthetics has a connection which has been demonstratively established by the Yorùbá as epressed in the images and illustrations used in this paper.

Calgon (a combination of sodium hexametaphosphate and sodium carbonate) has proved to be the most effective dispersing agent in determining the grain size distribution of fine-grained soils by means of the hydrometer analysis. Previous research on the effect of the sodium hexametaphosphate content of dispersing agents on the clay contents showed that the addition of sodium carbonate to sodium hexametaphosphate increases its dispersing effectiveness. Hence, Calgon 35:7 was used /recommended by many researchers/methods and proved to be the most effective dispersing agent. Although previous work focusing on the effect of varying the concentration of sodium hexametaphosphate in Calgon has been reported, the effect of the concentration of sodium carbonate in Calgon has not been assessed and reported. For this reason, in this investigation a series of hydrometer test analyses were conducted using the 152H and ASTM 152H: E100 hydrometers with Calgon in ratios of 35:0, 35:20 and 35:30.  It was observed that with any increase in sodium carbonate content beyond 7 grams, the percentage clay content actually decreased tremendously in the case of hydrometer 152H. However, for the other hydrometer, Calgon (35:0) proved to be most effective combination. Thus, the increase in the sodium carbonate content in Calgon, beyond 7 g/ litre, is not recommended.

The availability of phosphorus (P) in soil is perceived to be one of the limiting factors to sustainable sugarcane production in Fiji. The main objective of this research was to ascertain the amount of bioavailable phosphorus in some Fiji sugarcane growing area soils; this will be valuable in improving the determination of the required amount of inorganic fertilizer to be applied to the soil. In this study, twelve different soils were selected from the sugarcane belt of Fiji and phosphorus buffer index (PBI) and phosphorus isotherm experiments were performed. Soil physical and chemical parameters were also measured and Pearson’s correlation tests used to identify patterns. It was found that Oxisols had the highest PBI values ranging from 134 to 170 while Inceptisols had the lowest ranging from 33 to 54. The PBI data followed a similar pattern to the generated isotherm curves of the different soil types. Most interest was in identifying soils with low PBIs as they have greater potential for P leaching through runoff into waterways. Clay content showed a strong positive correlation with PBI (R = 0.76, p ≤ 0.005). There is strong association with phosphorus fixation in soil with increasing levels of Al and Fe in the soil. Phosphorus availability and P fixation varied with soil types.

Three liquid zinc (Zn) fertilisers were mixed with the upper 1.5 cm of columns representing 3 different soil profiles: Aquic Haploxeralf, of an acid nature and with hydromorphic problems; Calcic Haploxeralf, of a neutral nature; and Typic Xerorthents, of a calcareous nature. They were periodically irrigated for 60 days. Most of the applied Zn remained in the top of the soil when it was added as Zn-lignosulfonate plus EDTA or Zn-2-hydroxy-1,2,3-propanotricarboxilate. When Zn-EDTA plus fulvic and humic acid fertiliser was applied, Zn migrated and distributed throughout the soil resulting in losses of Zn by leaching of 2.29% in acidic soil, 27.36% in neutral soil, and 10.5% in calcareous soil of the Zn applied. The 3 fertilisers produce sufficient concentrations of the bioavailable Zn forms in the Ap horizons (DTPA and Mehlich-3 extractable Zn) for the cultivation of different plants. In the calcareous soil, which contained free CaCO3, the amount of Zn extracted by Mehlich-3 was higher than in soils with no free CaCO3. Distribution of Zn in the soil was studied at the beginning and end of the experiment by means of one sequential fractionation and showed that added Zn remained in more labile fractions for uptake by plants in the acid and neutral soils when compared with the control. When Zn was added to calcareous soil, no amount of Zn was detected in the water-soluble plus exchangeable fraction at the end of experiment for any Zn fertiliser source.

A previous study has shown a strong regional association between cold climate and coronary mortality in Sweden. The present study intended to elucidate further this association, in particular whether or not it could be attributed to smoking, hypertension and fat consumption. The 284 Swedish municipalities were used as units. The outcome was mortality (SMR) from acute myocardial infarction in men aged 40–64. Prevalence of smoking and use of snuff was estimated by interviews. Sales of antihypertensive drugs were used to estimate prevalence of hypertension. Sales of butter and estimates of consumption of saturated fat by interviews were used to estimate the consumption of fat. Weighted determination coefficients (D) were calculated. Apart from the strong association between cold climate and coronary mortality (D=0.39), an association was shown between fat consumption and coronary mortality (D=0.22). A weaker association was found between prevalency of snuffing and coronary mortality (D=0.15) and between sales of butter and coronary mortality (D=0.10) and the weakest between sales of antihypertensives and coronary mortality (D=0.06). No association was found between prevalence of smoking and coronary mortality. When the other explanatory factors were added to cold climate in the model no substantial enhancement of the association was achieved. Cold exposure was correlated to the other explanatory factors. To conclude, this study showed that the strong association between cold exposure and coronary mortality was not affected by the regional variation in the estimates of fat consumption, hypertension or tobacco use.
