The objective of this study was to establish simple variables for the selection of asparagus (Asparagus officinalis L.) cultivars with good storage potential. Five asparagus cultivars, 277E-22-8, Jersey Giant, Larac, Viking KB3 and 70-207 were stored at 1 °C for 0, 7, 14 and 21 d. At each sampling date chlorophyll content, rate of respiration and shear force were measured. Cladophyll expansion, presence of mold and blue hue of the stem were visually assessed. Jersey Giant and 277E-22-8 had the best storage potential and were still commercially acceptable after 3 wk of storage. They differed from Larac in visual assessment, particularly cladophyll expansion, and toughness of the spear. The chlorophyll content and respiration rate were not reliable indicators of storage potential. Key words: Asparagus officinalis, shelf-life, storage, toughness, respiration, chlorophyll

Broccoli (Brassica oleracea L. var. italica `Citation') florets were treated postharvest with either benzyladenine or trans-zeatin at either 10 or 50 ppm before packaging in perforated polyethylene bags and storage at 16C. The most pronounced effects were observed with benzyladenine at 50 ppm. Compared to controls, respiration rate was reduced 50% and ethylene production increased 40% throughout the first 4 days of storage. Total chlorophyll content had dropped 60% in controls, but was unchanged in cytokinin-treated florets, which had a 90% longer shelf life than controls. These effects depended on the amount of cytokinin applied and were of greater magnitude with benzyladenine than with zeatin.

The aim of the study was to assess, through a comparative shelf-life test, the suitability of two packaging materials, namely macro-perforated polypropylene (PP MA) and micro-perforated coextruded polypropylene (PP C), for the quality preservation of green asparagus (Asparagus officinalis L. ‘Vegalim’). Quality of spears was evaluated during 30 days at refrigerated storage by monitoring chemical, physical, and enzymatic parameters as well as sensory descriptors. PP C kept headspace composition close to suggested values for fresh green asparagus. Total color difference increased during the storage and it was highly correlated with chlorophyll-a and carotenoids, however, sensory color perception did not change significantly until 22 days of storage. PP C maintained ascorbic acid concentrations close to the initial levels, limited total phenolic compound loss to 24% (45% in PP MA), determined an increase of 72% in fiber content and small changes in lignin value; enzymatic changes were significantly inhibited. Significant sensorial differences were detected after 22 days of storage, with PP C performing better than PP MA. PP C film was confirmed as the best choice, limiting weight loss and maintaining a fresh-like appearance during 30 days of storage, thus allowing an extension in postharvest life.

THE WRITTEN examination of January 15, 1954, was taken by 515 candidates, a larger number than in any previous year except 1953 when there were 607 candidates Grades ranged from a lowest mark of 32.0 to a highest mark of 89.5 Inspection of the range resulted in the decision to place the passing mark at 51. On this basis there were 32, or 6.2%, who failed and were therefore ineligible for oral examination. The distribution of the grades earned by the 515 candidates is presented in the form of a histogram. As an aid to visual assessment of the nature of the distribution, a normal frequency curve computed from the mean and standard deviation of the data has been superimposed on the diagram. The distribution of the grades is clearly and impressively skewed to the left, that is, the scores tend to be massed at the high end of the scale and spread out at the low end. An examination of this type is relatively sensitive in the zone of poorer scholarship where the selection of failures is to be made and relatively insensitive in the range of higher scholarship. The intrinsic reliability of the examination has again been assessed by comparing the grade made by each candidate on his odd-numbered questions with that earned on his even-numbered questions. The comparison reveals a "probable error of estimate," P.E.m, of 2.39, a lower figure and therefore a higher degree of reliability than yielded by any previous examination. The Committee is pleased that the increase in reliability was accomplished in spite of the fact that the length of the examination was decreased from 250 grading points in 1953 to 200 grading points.

The objective: depression of obstetric and perinatal complications at pregnant women with pathological increase of body weight during pregnancy on the basis of studying of clinical-functional, endocrinologic, metabolic, morphological features of condition of fetoplacental complex and development of advanced algorithm of treatment-and-prophylactic actions. Materials and methods. We conducted examination of 264 patients who consisted on the account concerning pregnancy in female consultations of Kiev. By a method of selection of 178 women were included in retrospective research and 86 – in prospective. The main group was made by 39 pregnant women with whom led individual discussions, control – 142 women, that received traditional references in female consultation. Results. Use of the algorithm improved by us allows to improve obstetric (decrease of frequency of a preeclampsia by 12.3%; anomalies of a patrimonial deyalnost for 8.4%) and perinatal outcomes (depression of level of an asphyxia at a delivery for 9.4% and post-natal adaptation for 7.8%) deliveries of women with an excessive increase of body weight during pregnancy. Conclusion. The received results grant the right to recommend the algorithm improved by us for wide use in practical health care. Key words: obstetric and perinatal pathology, pathological increase of body weight, prophylaxis.

The effect of storage temperature on the shelf life, weight loss, respiration rate and ethylene production of Hass avocado (Persea americana Mill) was studied. Two batches of green mature avocado fruits, classified as ‘‘super extra’’ were stored at 10 and 20 C (first batch) and at 7 and 25 C (second batch). The avocado shelf lives were 22, 8, 32 and 6 days at 10, 20, 7 and 25 C, respectively. Based on the data of the first assay Q10 was calculated as 2.75, with this value the predicted shelf life at 7 and 25 C were 29.8 and 4.8 days, respectively. That meant shelf life was underestimated 7 and 20% at 7 and 25 C, respectively. Weight loss was linear at both the storage temperatures, it was 4.3% in fruits at 20 C for 8 days and 3.0% at 10 C for 22 days. The maximum CO2 production at 20 C was reached during the second day of storage, while at 10 C it was reached at the 17th day (176.17 15.98 and 74.73 7.32 mL/kg h, respectively). The maximum ethylene production at 20 C was reached the second day of storage, and at 10 C the 6th day (239.06 54.55 and 28.00 8.12 mL/kg h, respectively).

The fable has always had a rhetoric and illustrative function that manifested itself during its long history in two different ways: on one hand, it represented an example in order to teach, which usually implied the moral component, or on the other hand, to criticize. While it strived to achieve one of these intentions, or sometimes both simultaneously, it could have been written in a humorous, mocking, ironic or sarcastic tone. In this paper, we analyze a selection of classical and medieval, 18th and 19th century fables written in Spanish, with definitions proposed by Phaedrus, Rodríguez Adrados and Mireya Camurati as starting points, in order to show that the critical aspect of this genre was openly maintained and taken benefit of even in the historical periods when its didactic and moralizing intention was preferred and strongly emphasized.</p></div><p>Key words: fable, definition of genre, diachronic approach, critical aspect, didactic and moral aspect</p><p> </p>
